He returned to MTSU in 1947 where he was hired as the school’s head football coach and athletic director. During his 21 years as the Blue Raiders head football coach, Mr. Murphy accumulated a 155-63-8 record which remains as the most wins in school history. After retiring from his football coaching duties, Mr. Murphy remained as MTSU’s athletic director until 1981.
