Ohio Valley Conference

Donald Combs began his 19 year swim coaching career at EKU in 1956 and continued until 1975.  Under his tutelage the Colonels posted a 143-28 record, claimed 13 straight Kentucky Intercollegiate Swimming Championships, and 28 student-athletes were named All-Americans.  The College Swimming Coaches Association honored Combs by giving him “Master Coach” status. 

From 1972-91, he also served EKU as director of athletics.  Under his leadership, Combs ushered the EKU athletic department through one of its most successful periods.  The Colonels added ten varsity sports, claimed eight OVC all-sport trophies, and the football team won the 1979 and 1982 I-AA national championships under Combs
