During that time he led his team to two NCAA tournament appearances (1964, 1969). In his 16 seasons Luther compiled a 241-154 (.610) overall record, including a 173-41 home record. His team won OVC Championships in 1964, 1968 and 1969. He would later return to coach at UT Martin from 1992-99. There he compiled a 78-129 record. His 319 total victories while a coach ranked first in league history at the time of his retirement (the record has since been broken). Luther was named OVC Coach of the Year in 1964 and 1969 at Murray State and in 1996 at UT Martin, making him the only coach to win Coach of the Year honors at two different OVC institutions.
