McBrayer served as head men’s basketball coach at Eastern Kentucky University from 1946 to 1962, compiling a 219-144 record while bringing national acclaim to the university and the OVC, including a No. 24 national ranking for his 1949-50 squad. He holds the school record for career victories, registering 12 winning seasons during his 16-year tenure while guiding his teams to three OVC regular-season titles and two tournament championships.

A former All-American player at the University of Kentucky, McBrayer began his coaching career as an assistant on the staff of Wildcat legend Adolph Rupp, serving in that capacity from 1935 to 1943. McBrayer is also a member of the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame and the Naismith Hall of Fame.
