Dr. Banks worked with the Tennessee Tech athletics department for 31 of his 34 years on the faculty and served as the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) for 25 years before stepping down in 2006. Originally appointed to the Athletics Committee in 1975, Banks became the FAR in 1981. He witnessed major changes in college athletics, worked with many different coaches and oversaw the development of hundreds of student-athletes. In his role as the FAR, Banks was involved with compliance and certification issues, worked with rules education for athletics staff and most recently supervised the initial collection and submission of data for the new NCAA Academic Performance Rating (APR).

 

He has served on numerous committees including the Athletics Awards Committee at Tech and the NCAA Research Committee (1988-98), NCAA Rifle Committee (1981-1988) and the NCAA Council. He is currently fulfilling a four-year term on the NCAA Academic/Eligibility/Compliance (AEC) Cabinet and is the chair of the Initial Eligibility Issues subcommittee. Banks also continues to work as an associate professor of chemistry, a position he has held since arriving on the TTU campus in 1972. As a collegian, Banks was a two-time rifle All-American at KansasState University and has served as the statistician and chief scoring official for the NCAA Rifle Championships for many years.
