PHILADELPHIA - Southeast Missouri State redshirt freshman quarterback
Scott Lathrop finished 14th in voting for the 2012 Jerry Rice Award presented by the Sports Network. The award is given to the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and was announced at the FCS Awards Banquet on Monday.
Out of 145 total ballots cast, Lathrop received two first-place votes, two second-place votes, two third-place votes and three fifth-place votes to tally 27 total points. Villanova quarterback John Robertson was named the winner of the award.
Lathrop was named OVC Freshman of the Year in 2012. He took over Southeast's starting job after the protected starter was injured early in preseason camp. Lathrop finished the season with 1,824 yards of total offense and manned the controls of a rushing offense that ranked ninth in the FCS with 262.3 yards per game. He completed 91-of-158 passes for 1,025 yards and seven touchdowns and ran the ball in the Redhawks option-based attack 211 times for 824 yards and seven TDs.
Lathrop continued to get better as the season went along and ended up rushing for 100 or more yards in four of his final six starts. That stretch included a 179-yard, two-touchdown effort in a road victory at Austin Peay that eventually resulted in OVC Newcomer of the Week accolades. Against nationally-ranked Tennessee State, Lathrop ran for 145 yards and a touchdown, while throwing for 222 yards and a score. He finished the season ranked seventh in the conference in rushing (74.9 ypg).
