GAME NOTES: UT Martin hosts Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday night in its final regular season non-conference action of the season. The game is also the first of the season for the Skyhawks at home and first against a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponent (after playing two FBS teams to start the year). Southeastern comes to town with first-year head coach Ron Roberts, who played two seasons of football (1988-89) at UT Martin and graduated in 1990. In the last meeting between the two schools (2010), Derek Carr threw for 390 yards and a touchdown and Jason McNair ran for 132 yards but UT Martin came out on the short end of a 24-10 decision after committing four turnovers.
 
SCOUTING SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA: Roberts took over at Southeastern Louisiana after guiding Delta State to four Gulf South Championships and four appearances in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Overall he was 47-16 in five years at Delta State before taking over the Lions program before this season. Southeastern started the season with a 62-10 loss at SEC foe Missouri and opened its home season last week, falling 31-14 to South Dakota State. In that contest SDSU jumped out to a 13-0 advantage before the Lions were able to trim the lead to 13-7 early in the third quarter before the Jacks went on an 18-0 run to put the game out of reach. South Dakota State outgained Southeastern Louisiana 439-179 in total offense. The SLU defense was led by sophomore linebacker Kaleb Muse who had 14 tackles while senior defensive end Devan Walker added 10 stops. Quarterback Nathan Stanley completed 22-of-43 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown.
 
SCOUTING UT MARTIN: After opening the season with a victory over Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent Memphis, the Skyhawks lost FBS opponent Northern Illinois last week. The Skyhawks were able to net 346 yards of total offense, including 264 passing yards for senior quarterback Derek Carr. Carr completed 19-of-35 passes and had a seven-yard touchdown pass to Corey Jordan in the fourth quarter. Carr now has 5,627 career passing yards, the third-most in school history. Senior Quentin Sims pulled down 10 passes for 152 yards, the highest yardage output by an OVC receiver so far this season. Sims currently ranks fourth nationally in receptions (9.0/game) and sixth nationally in receiving yards (111.0 yards/game). The UTM team is just 4-for-10 in the red zone this season after being 45-of-48 (94%) a season ago. Junior linebacker Ben Johnson had 13 tackles (10 solo) and a sack to lead the Skyhawk defense. Chris Wright recovered his second fumble of the season against NIU and leads all FCS players in that category (2).

GAME NOTES: Austin Peay travels to Tennessee State for the first Conference matchup of the 2012 season. The game is also the first of the sixth annual Sgt. York Trophy series, which is played between the four OVC schools from the state of Tennessee. Tennessee State is the defending Sgt. York Champion, winning the title for the third time a year ago (TSU also won in 2007 and 2008). Tennessee State leads the all-time series with Austin Peay by an 8-6 margin, although the Governors have won the last three meetings, each by three points. Since the series was renewed in 2007 after a 10-year break (when APSU was playing non-scholarship football), the last five meetings have each been decided by three or less points. In last year’s meeting Tennessee State pulled ahead 34-20 with 7:32 to play in the third quarter before Austin Peay scored the final 17 points of the game, including touchdown runs by Ryan White and Wesley Kitts and a game-winning 35-yard field goal by Stephen Stansell with 11 seconds to play. Trabis Ward led the Tigers with 101 yards rushing while TSU quarterback Michael German passed for 304 yards and two touchdowns. Jake Ryan led the APSU attack with 314 passing yards and two scores. Saturday’s game marks a return to on-campus football for Tennessee State, as the Tigers will play at Hale Stadium for the first time since the 1998 season. The game is the first of three at the venue for the Tigers this year. TSU and APSU last played against each other in Hale Stadium (also known as “The Hole”) in 1996, when TSU captured a 38-14 victory. Saturday’s game also features a pair of head coaches coaching at their alma maters.
 
SCOUTING AUSTIN PEAY: Austin Peay played its second-straight game against a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent last week, losing at No. 15 Virginia Tech. The Govs were limited to 221 yards of total offense, including just 62 passing yards. Senior Wesley Kitts recorded his second-straight 100-yard rushing game, tallying a career-high 110 yards on 22 carries, including a long rush of 32 yards. Kitts currently ranks fourth in the OVC and 19th nationally in rushing (107.0 yards/game). Terrence Oliver scored on a 10-yard run in the third quarter; it was his first career rushing touchdown and marked the 75-straight game the Govs had scored in. Junior Earnest Smith had eight tackles and a sack against the Hokies while also forcing a fumble. Safety Johnathan Shuler led Austin Peay with nine tackles. APSU currently leads all FCS teams in red zone offense (100%) and fourth down conversion defense (0%).
 
SCOUTING TENNESSEE STATE: Tennessee State improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2008 (when the team began 4-0) with a neutral site victory over Jackson State in the Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis on Saturday. Trabis Ward earned Classic MVP and OVC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors after carrying the ball 23 times for 114 yards and three touchdowns. He became just the sixth TSU player to have three or more rushing touchdowns in a game and first since the 2008 season. Ward now ranks 10th nationally in rushing (119.0 yards/game) and sixth nationally in scoring (12.0 points/game). Redshirt freshman Telvin Hooks added 99 yards on 10 carries, including a 51-yard run. Overall the Tigers rushing attack netted 235 yards, while limiting Jackson State to just 46 yards on the ground. As a team Tennessee State ranks seventh nationally in turnover margin (+2.0/game).

GAME NOTES: Eastern Illinois and Illinois State will meet for the 101st playing of the Mid-American Classic on Saturday afternoon. Last year the two teams played for a traveling trophy for the first time in the long series, as the rivalry was re-branded with the Mid-American Classic moniker. Illinois State holds an advantage in the all-time series, which dates back to 1901. Last year Eastern Illinois scored a 33-26 victory to open the 2011 season. In that game Jimmy Garoppolo completed 25-of-34 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for an additional touchdown. His touchdown pass to Chris Wright with 2:38 to play proved to be the game winner. Lorence Ricks pulled in seven catches for 114 yards and a score. Illinois State head coach Brock Spack was formerly an assistant coach under at Eastern Illinois under legendary coach Bob Spoo, who retired at the end of last season.
 
SCOUTING EASTERN ILLINOIS: Coming off a victory over Southern Illinois to begin the season, Eastern Illinois suffered a loss at FBS foe Western Michigan this past Saturday. That game was tied at 14 at the end of the first quarter before WMU scored 28 unanswered points in the second quarter to put the game out of reach. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who earned National Player of the Week honors after his week one performance, completed 15-of-32 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown in week two of the season. Garoppolo was picked off twice and sacked four times. Five of his completions went to Erik Lora who netted 115 receiving yards in the game. Through two weeks of the season Lora ranks third nationally in receiving yards/game (133.0) and fourth in receptions/game (9.0). Garoppolo is seventh nationally in passing (297.0 yards/game) and moved into fifth place on the school’s career passing list during the game. Nick Beard had 13 tackles as did newcomer LeQuince McCall. Eastern Illinois now ranks first nationally in fumbles recovered (7) and turnovers gained (10).
 
SCOUTING ILLINOIS STATE: Illinois State, winners of seven of its last eight games dating back to last season, is off to an unbeaten start to the season, topping Dayton 56-14 in week one of the season and last week besting Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) foe Eastern Michigan 31-14. The win was the first over a FBS opponent for the Redbirds since topping Akron in the 1991 season; overall it broke a 20-game losing streak to FBS foes. It also marked the first time ISU had started the season 2-0 since 1999; that season the team went on to finish 11-3 and advanced to the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs. The Illinois State defense was able to force five turnovers against EMU and did not allow any second half points to the Eagles. Safety Ben Ericksen was named Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) Defensive Player of the Week after recording two interceptions, four tackles and a pass breakup that resulted in another interception. Running back Darrelynn Dunn led the team with 129 rushing yards on 32 carries while also scoring two touchdowns. Jonathon Miller was named MVFC Newcomer of the Week after carrying the ball nine times for 81 yards (9.0 yards/carry) and a score. Quarterback Matt Brown was 14-of-22 for 155 yards and a touchdown.

GAME NOTES: After starting the season 2-0 for the first time since 1989, Tennessee Tech will play its first game away from Tucker Stadium on Saturday when they visit the fourth-ranked team in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the Oregon Ducks. It is the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The game is the first non-Thursday game of the season for Tennessee Tech.
 
SCOUTING TENNESSEE TECH: After a home win over FCS foe Hampton to start the 2012 season, Tennessee Tech followed it with a 42-14 win over Division II North Greenville last Thursday night. It marks just the fourth time in the past 32 years that the Golden Eagles have started the season 2-0. Senior running back Adam Urbano was potent once again, carrying the ball 14 times for 122 yards (8.7 yards/game) and two touchdowns. It marked his second 100-yard game of the season and Urbano now ranks second nationally in rushing (140.0 yards/game) and 11th in all-purpose yards (151.5 yards/game). Senior quarterback Tre Lamb was solid again, completing 18-of-26 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns. Lamb now has 4,045 career passing yards, making him only one of five players in TTU history with 4,000 or more passing yards. After two starts Lamb ranks second nationally in passing efficiency (187.36) and eighth in total offense (317.0 yards/game). One of Lamb’s favorite targets as been his former high school teammate Da’Rick Rogers, who joined the team after transferring from Tennessee prior to the season. Against North Greenville Rogers caught five passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. Despite limited practice time with the team Rogers has caught eight passes for 163 yards (20.4 yards/catch) in two weeks. Will Johnson led the Tech defense with a career-best 13 tackles while Austin Tallant added 11 stops and William Dillard and Cory Webber each recorded their first career interceptions. Junior punter Chad Zinchini averaged 44.2 yards/punt
 
SCOUTING OREGON: Oregon opened the 2012 season with a 57-34 victory over Arkansas State (a game that saw the Ducks score 50 points in the first half) and followed that with 42-25 victory over Fresno State this past Saturday. In that game senior running back Kenjon Barner ran for 201 yards and three touchdowns in leading No. 4 Oregon to the victory. De’Anthony Thomas added 102 yards and two touchdowns as the Ducks tallied 366 total yards on the ground. Thomas also caught a team-high four passes for 26 yards. Through two games Thomas is averaging 16.6 yards/rush and tops the team with 81 receiving yards (10.1 yards/catch). Redshirt freshman quarterback Marcus Mariota was 19-of-27 for 166 yards and a score. Oregon has gotten off to quick starts this season, outscoring opponents 43-3 in the first quarter and 85-16 total in the first half.

GAME NOTES: Eastern Kentucky will travel to Conway, S.C. for its first-ever matchup with Coastal Carolina on Saturday night. The Colonels are 3-6 in FCS non-conference games under head coach Dean Hood. The team has not won a non-conference road FCS game since 2002, a streak of eight-straight losses.
 
SCOUTING EASTERN KENTUCKY: OVC preseason favorite Eastern Kentucky recorded its first win of the season on Saturday, topping Morehead State 24-17 in front of 11,600 fans at Roy Kidd Stadium. The win came a week after losing to Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) foe Purdue to start the 2012 season. The Colonels moved up one spot in the Sports Network poll to 20th and remained 25th in the FCS Coaches Top 25. Overall it was the 50th win over Morehead State in program history. The game kicked off the 44th season at Roy Kidd Stadium for the Colonels, who are now 10-3 in home openers since the 2000 season. After missing the first game of the year with an injury, senior quarterback T.J. Pryor returned to the gridiron and completed 13-of-22 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. Cameron Bailey hauled in five of those passes, netting a team-high 49 receiving yards. On the ground senior All-American Matt Denham carried the ball 34 times for 166 yards and at touchdown. The output was 3.5 times for yards that Denham racked up in the season opener (47 yards at Purdue). In the process Denham passed the 2,000 career yard mark; for the game Denham did not have a negative rush on the night. Overall the offense won the time of possession battle, holding the ball for 41:46, the highest mark in five years under head coach Dean Hood. Defensively sophomore defensive back Brandon Stanley produced the games only turnover, intercepting a pass in the EKU end zone in the third quarter. He also ended a MSU drive with a sack in the third quarter. For the game Stanley totaled five solo tackles.
 
SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA: Coastal Carolina is off to a perfect start to the season after topping North Carolina A&T 29-13 in the season opener and winning a thrilling 47-45 triple overtime contest at Furman last week. The Chanticleers went ahead 22-12 with 4:12 to play in the game before Furman rebounded with two touchdowns in a 1:19 span to take a 25-22 lead (after one of the two point after attempts was blocked). But Coastal had one last drive left in them, and Alex Catron connected on a 45-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime. The teams each scored touchdowns in the first two overtimes and Coastal Carolina again scored to begin the third overtime as DeMario Bennett hauled in a 26-yard pass from Armasi Hillary. Bennett then added the two-point conversion to put his team up eight points. After Furman scored its third overtime touchdown, the Paladins two-point attempt pass sailed long, giving Coastal the 47-45 victory. Hillary finished the game 20-of-27 for 292 yards and two touchdowns while Catron connected on 3-of-4 field goals, making attempts from 35, 38 and 45 yards.

GAME NOTES: Regional rivals Southeast Missouri State and Southern Illinois meet for the 78th time on Saturday night in Carbondale. Southeast Missouri leads the all-time series although SIU has won five of the last six meetings including 38-10 a season ago in Cape Girardeau. In that contest Redhawks quarterback Matt Scheible passed for 144 yards and a touchdown and had a game-high 91 rushing yards. The Salukis were paced by quarterback Paul McIntosh who passed for 246 yards and a score and rushed for 65 additional yards. These two teams opened the brand new Saluki Stadium two years ago when Southeast Missouri upset then 5th-ranked Southern Illinois by a 24-21 margin. In that game Southeast running back Henry Harris had 142 yards and two touchdowns.
 
SCOUTING SOUTHEAST MISSOURI: After a season-opening loss at FBS foe Central Michigan, Southeast Missouri opened the home portion of its schedule last Saturday with a 30-18 win over Division II Mars Hill College. With the victory the Redhawks improved to 6-1 in home openers under current head coach Tony Samuel. The Southeast Missouri defense had six takeaways on the night including five interceptions; it marked the first time the team had five interceptions in a game since 1997 (Eastern Illinois). The Redhawks currently rank first nationally in passes intercepted (6) and least interceptions thrown (0); the team is also fourth among FCS schools in turnover margin (+2.5/game). Senior Tylor Brock accounted for two of the interceptions (he also forced a fumble) and is tied for second nationally in interceptions/game (1.0). Senior kicker Drew Geldbach converted on 3-of-4 field goal attempts, making attempts from 22, 22 and 32 yards. Geldbach currently ranks first nationally in field goals made/game (2.50). The Redhawks had 402 total yards of offense in the game, including 288 yards on the ground. Senior Levi Terrell led the way with 128 yards on 22 carries while senior Renard Celestin touched the ball nine times and netted 93 yards (10.3 yards/carry) and a pair of touchdowns. Redshirt freshman quarterback Scott Lathrop completed 12-of-21 passes for 114 yards and a score and rushed for a net of 37 yards, although he did have a 52-yard rush during the game. During the game sophomore return specialist Spencer Davis surpassed 1,500 all-purpose yards.
 
SCOUTING SOUTHERN ILLINOIS: Southern Illinois will be challenging its second OVC opponent of this young season, as the Salukis opened the year with a 49-28 loss to Eastern Illinois. A week ago SIU lost 30-14 at Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) foe Miami (Ohio). In that game Kory Faulkner completed 19-of-34 passes for 195 yards while Mika’il McCall carried the ball 16 times for a career-best 74 yards and two touchdowns. Overall the Salukis rushed for 154 yards. The SIU offense outgained the RedHawks 349-336 for the game; it marked the second-straight season the team had outgained an FBS foe (Ole Miss). Carlton Lewis had a career-high 11 tackles while Terrell Wilson had a career-high nine stops. The Saluki defense has now recorded a sack in 17 consecutive games and 30 of its last 31 games overall.

GAME NOTES: Murray State and Missouri State will each be searching for its first victory of the season when the two teams play a non-conference game on Saturday night in Springfield. Murray State has suffered losses to a pair of nationally-ranked teams in FBS foe Florida State and FCS opponent Central Arkansas. Missouri State is in the same boat, although both of their nationally-ranked opponents have been from the FBS level, playing No. 22 Kansas State and No. 23 Louisville to begin the year. This matchup marks the seventh in the all-time series. The last time the two teams played it was a memorable offensive shootout as the teams combined for 131 points and 1,423 yards of total offense. Murray State made history by becoming the first FCS school to have a 500-yard passer (Casey Brockman, 570), a 200-yard receiver (Marcus Harris, 213) and a 200-yard rusher (Mike Harris, 212). Brockman threw seven touchdown passes in that game, tying the OVC all-time record.
 
SCOUTING MURRAY STATE: Murray State netted 537 yards of total offense on Saturday against No. 20 Central Arkansas, but three red zone turnovers proved too much to overcome in a 42-20 loss in front of nearly 10,000 people at Roy Stewart Stadium. Senior quarterback Casey Brockman finished the game 41-of-63 for 445 yards and a touchdown but did throw three interceptions and was sacked five times. Ja-Vonta Trotter had a career-high 11 receptions for 92 yards while Walter Powell grabbed seven passes for 88 yards. Junior linebacker Qua Huzzie was named National Linebacker of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) after netting nine tackles, 4.0 tackles-for-loss and intercepting his first career pass. Murray State currently ranks 10th nationally in passing offense (293.5 yards/game).
 
SCOUTING MISSOURI STATE: After falling to Kansas State 51-9 in its first game of the season, the Bears lost 35-7 at No. 23 Louisville on Saturday. The Bears fell victim to UofL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater who completed 30-of-39 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns. Missouri State was led by Ashton Glaser who completed 14-of-23 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown while Ryan Heaston led the rushing attack with 38 yards on nine carries. Sophomore Cal Schaffitzel registered 17 tackles (including 16 solo stops) while Ryan Callender added 10 stops for the Bears defense.
