OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala. - Morehead State's
Jeanette Petersen was named the 2014-15 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year for women’s golf. The award, along with the All-OVC and All-Newcomer squads, were announced Monday evening at a banquet following the first day of play at the 2015 OVC Championship.
The OVC Player and Coach of the Year awards will be announced Wednesday afternoon following the final round of play at the Championship, which is being held at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama (just outside Huntsville).
Petersen is the fourth Morehead State player to earn the award, all of which have come in the past seven years. She joins Marisa Kamelgarn (2010), Vanessa Bognot (2012) and Anna Appert Lund (2013) as the other Eagle players to take home the honor. The native of Krusaa, Denmark posted the top scoring average (75.7) in the OVC this season. She played in nine events (23 rounds) and recorded three top five finishes including being the runner-up at the LPGA Xavier Invitational in October. The freshman also earned a spot on the All-OVC team.
For the third year in a row the All-OVC team was comprised of one 10-person squad instead of two five-member teams as done in past seasons. The All-OVC team included one senior, three juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen.
The team included Petersen, the Freshman of the Year, and four players who were All-OVC selections a season ago including Eastern Kentucky sophomore
Sofie Levin, Jacksonville State senior
Maya Parsons and junior
Melania Bajo Geijo and Morehead State sophomore
Anna Magnusson. The team also included Eastern Kentucky junior
Becky Sharpe, Murray State freshman
Moa Folke and sophomore
Jacklyn Van Meter and Tennessee Tech junior
Maddi Everts and sophomore
Whitney Robertson.
Petersen, the Freshman of the Year, and Folke, an All-OVC selection, headlined the five-person All-Newcomer squad. The duo was joined by a pair of Belmont players in
Katie Story and
Mallory Sullivan and SIUE's
Madison Frerking.
