Jacksonville State's
Dalton Screws has been named to the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, Allstate Insurance and the American Football Coaches Association announced this week. The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, is comprised of athletes who have used their limited free time to perform inspirational acts of service.
Screws, a redshirt junior from Anniston, was just one of 22 student-athletes selected to the team and becomes the fourth Jacksonville State football player to earn the honor, joining Daniel Kirkland (1999), Chris Kirk (2004) and Josh Cain (2009).
The two 11-member teams - one composed of players competing in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and a combined team representing the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Divisions II, III and the NAIA - honor players that embody the true spirit of "teamwork" and "giving back" through commendable acts of kindness and community service.
Screws is very active in numerous organizations, and has spent the last six summers on mission trips with E3 Partners. His first trip was to Caracas, Venezuela, but his last five have been to Ukara Island and Magumu in the African nation of Tanzania. He teaches the natives of this underdeveloped land how to improve their quality of life, including showing them things such as how to keep fish clean so it can be sold at full value and how to dig wells for fresh water. He also helps provide AIDS testing and eye exams all while sharing his faith.
The former Wellborn High School product, represents the JSU football team on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), where he coordinated efforts to raise funds to support the Hoops for Hero's project, and JSU's student-athlete day. He is also the youth minister at Center of Hope Church in Anniston, where he plays in the praise band, while also serving as a team huddle leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Screws also has excelled in the classroom, where he carries a 3.99 grade point average and is majoring in biology. He has also rolled up numerous academic honors, including being named to the President's List, Dean's List and the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll,.
Other community service projects that Screws has been involved with includes helping the JSU football team pack more than 100,000 meals through the Project 58, while also volunteering with the team in local community service by visiting Rainbow Omega, which helps developmentally challenged adults.
Since being established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team has highlighted the importance of community service and volunteerism. From sponsoring orphans in Ethiopia, to founding a program that helps underprivileged youth pursue a college degree, these 22 men continue to change their communities for the better.
"The members of the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team are an excellent example of hard work and dedication, both on the field and off," AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. "These 22 student-athletes have shown, through their countless hours of community service and work on the football field, that you can give more of yourself to help those around you. It's a privilege to team up with Allstate to honor these students."
College football fans can vote for the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team Captain at ESPN.com/Allstate through November 25, 2015. The Team Captain and his fellow award recipients will be invited to New Orleans to participate in a community project before the 2016 Allstate Sugar Bowl.
