JACKSONVILLE STATE 4, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Jacksonville State men's tennis team blanked Eastern Illinois 4-0 Friday morning in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Championships at the Centennial Sportsplex.
The Gamecocks (15-4) earned the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead, then followed up with three consecutive singles wins. The victory over the Panthers (6-17) puts JSU in the second round against No. 2-seeded Tennessee Tech at 8 a.m. on Tuesday in Nashville.
Freshman of the Year Aljaz Kaplja and team mate Paolo Cucalon won their doubles match 6-3, and Andres Gomez and Guillermo Agost followed up with a 7-5 win at doubles No. 1 to secure the point.
Cucalon got the singles scoring started with a win over Gage Kingsmith (6-1, 6-1), and Joaquin Vallejo picked up his team-leading 13th win over Logan Charbonneau (6-2, 6-1) at No. 3.
With his team mates watching from the other side of the fence, Pablo Caffarena finished off EIU with a three-set victory over Grant Reiman (6-7, 6-0, 6-2) at No. 2. Kaplja, Agost and Sergio Lizarraga each had their matchups go unfinished.
EASTERN KENTUCKY 4, AUSTIN PEAY 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Eastern Kentucky University men’s tennis team took down the No. 5 seed, Austin Peay State University, 4-0, in round one of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at the Centennial Sports Complex.
Nicolas Castaldo paired with Parth Aggarwal at No. 3 doubles and picked up a 6-4 victory to start the day off. Guillem Sanchis and Carlos Dodero then fought for a 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles to clinch the point.
Sanchis collected a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles to put EKU up, 2-0.
Ramon van Flymen topped Almantas Ozelis at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-3 to give the Colonels match point, 3-0.
Castaldo defeated Jacob Lorino at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the match.
Aggarwal, Ruiz and Dodero were each leading in their respective singles sets before the match was called.
The men will be back in action against the No. 1 seeded Belmont University for a 12 p.m. ET semifinal match.
WOMEN'S RECAPS
AUSTIN PEAY 4, UT MARTIN 1
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University women's tennis team easily handled UT Martin in the opening round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, 4-1, Friday, at the Centennial Sportsplex.
The Skyhawks (4-14, 4-5 OVC) came out strong, winning at No. 1 doubles. The team of Helena Kuppig and Ana Albertson responded, coming from behind to win at No. 2 doubles, but the Skyhawks won at No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead into singles.
The Govs started out as perfectly as one can in singles, as every player won the first set of her match. OVC Player of the Year Lidia Yanes Garcia evened the match up at one with a straight set victory at No. 1 singles. After a rough first couple games, Claudia Yanes Garcia responded by blowing out her opponent in the second set, 6-0, as the Govs took the lead. Not even a minute after Claudia's win, it was OVC Freshman of the Year Fabienne Schmidt's turn to celebrate, as she also won in straight sets to give the Govs a 3-1 lead. Kuppig took control in the second set of her match and then she watched a ball fly out of bounds on match point to assure the Govs were moving on.
The win assures senior Brittney Covington at least one more match as a Gov. Covington won the first set of her match, but was trailing 3-2 in the second. The Govs now take on Murray State in the OVC Semifinals, 2 p.m., Saturday, for a spot in the OVC Championship. The Racers defeated the Govs 5-2 two weeks ago.
EASTERN ILLINOIS 4, JACKSONVILLE STATE 2
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Eastern Illinois women's tennis advanced to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament semifinals with a 4-2 win over Jacksonville State on Friday evening in Nashville.
EIU improved to 13-12 on the season and will play No. 1 seed Eastern Kentucky on Saturday evening.
The Panthers opened winning the doubles point as they rallied to win the final two matches to get the first point. Srishti Slaria and Claire Martin evened the doubles matches with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles after JSU won at No. 2. Stella Cliffe and Grace Summers then handed EIU the first point of the match with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
JSU evened the match winning at No. 6 singles. Summers and Cliffe then put EIU up 3-1 in the match winning at No. 3 and No. 2 singles. Summers won at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-1 over Malin Buechner giving EIU the 2-1 lead.
Cliffe pushed EIU's lead to 3-1 winning at No. 2 singles with at 6-2, 6-1 win over Alessia Locati.
JSU closed the gap to 3-2 winning at No. 1 singles. Emily Pugachevsky then clinched the win for the Panthers with a three set win over Diana Monsalve at No. 5 singles. Pugachevsky won 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
Slaria's match at No. 4 singles was unfinished in the third set when Pugachevsky scored the deciding point for EIU.
