Jacksonville State Grabs Lead After Day Two of 2019 OVC Men's Golf Championship

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. - Jacksonville State rallied from a two-shot deficit to take a five-shot lead into the final round of the 2019 OVC Men’s Golf Championship. The OVC Championship is being played at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

The course is playing a par 72 with yardage running 7,214 yards for the men's teams.

After an 11-under round on Sunday to open the Championship, JSU was one of only two schools with under-par rounds on Monday, tallying a team score of 282 (-6). The Gamecocks are looking to become the first OVC team to win three-straight championships since Austin Peay from 2001-03. Belmont (-12), the leader about day one, is five shots back, while Austin Peay (-7), who also was under par for the day, is third and followed closely by Murray State (-3).  SIUE (even) is fifth and followed by Eastern Kentucky (+1), Morehead State (+4), Tennessee Tech (+7), UT Martin (+21), Eastern Illinois (+31) and Tennessee State (+37).

Individually, Jacksonville State sophomore Jesus Montenegro equaled the low round of the day with a 4-under score of 68 to jump one spot to first place. He has a two-day total of 135 (-9) and is two shots ahead of Belmont’s Evan Davis, who followed his opening round of 67 with a score of 70. Four other individuals are at 5-under with 18 holes to play including Eastern Kentucky’s Billy Basham, Austin Peay’s Austin Lancaster, Murray State’s Avery Edwards and Morehead State’s Zac Viminitz.

Montenegro was one of three Jacksonville State golfers to shoot under par on Monday, as Maximo Portais (70) and Benedikt Thalmayr (71) also carded scores in the red; the duo is currently tied for 11th place. Quim Vidal Mora (140, -4) finds himself tied for seventh with 18 holes to play.

Belmont enters the final round in second, which would equal its best-ever finish at an OVC Championship (the Bruins tied for second in 2015). In addition to Davis (who is second), Daniel Booker is also in the top 10 after rounds of 68-73 (141, -3) to open the Championship.

Lancaster improved his opening round score by three shots on Monday, jumping up nine spots into a tie for third place. Michael Busse has also under par for Austin Peay on Monday, firing a round of 71 to enter the final round in ninth place. As a team the Govs are five spots out of second place.

Murray State held steady in fourth place as Edwards carded a round of 68 (-4) on Monday; that included a birdie on 18 to close out the round.  Austin Knight was also under par for the day (71, -1) and is in 16th place entering Tuesday’s action.

Conor Dore continues to pace the SIUE team, carding a score of 72 on Monday; he is tied for seventh place with 18 holes to play. Albert Nilsson was also under par for the day, carding a score of 71.

EKU’s Basham, who was the leader after day one, sits four shots out of first place after carding a 1-over round of 73 on Monday. Erik Lindwall, the OVC Player of the Year, improved his round by two shots from Sunday, and is tied for 17th with one day of play remaining.

After closing Sunday’s first round with a pair of eagles on the back nine, Morehead State’s Viminitz had a 4-under round of 68 on Monday to pull into a tie for third place.

Cameron Yeary equaled the best round of the Championship for Tennessee Tech on Monday, carding a 3-under score of 69; he is currently tied for 27th place.  Will Brooks leads the Golden Eagles with a two-day total of 145 (+1) which puts him in 20th place.

UT Martin got a pair of 70’s from Tate Chumley and Ross Redmont on Monday. Chumley enters the final round tied for 11th place (142, -2), while Redmont is tied for 31st (148, +4).

Romeo Perez carded the low round of the tournament for Eastern Illinois during Monday’s round with an even par 72. He has a two-day total of 145 (+1) and is tied for 20th with 18 holes to play.

TSU’s Sam Gatlin and Drew Owens are tied for 37th place (151, +7) with 18 holes remaining.

The OVC Men's Golf Championship will conclude with 18 holes of third round action on Tuesday. The action starts at 8:00 a.m. CT and live scoring can be accessed through links at OVCSports.com.
