On the evening of August 30, 2001,
Ashley Martin etched herself into the lore of college football history thanks to her right foot.
In a 72-10 victory over Cumberland University, Martin became the first female to score a point in a NCAA football game (and first to play at the NCAA Division I level), kicking an extra point in the first quarter. She finished the game a perfect 3-of-3 on point after attempts.
Afterwards she made national news and went to New York and was on Regis and Kelly, Late Night With David Letterman and Good Morning America among other shows. She was also featured in USA Today, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and several magazines including ESPN The Magazine, People, Newsweek, and The Sporting News.
Martin came to the Jacksonville State campus as a member of the Gamecocks soccer team where she led the team in scoring in 2001. She finished her four-year soccer career with 20 goals and 11 assists to rank on the school’s all-time lists.
Now known by her married name of Ashley Cockrell, she is the Dean of Students at Hillcrest Elementary School in Lake Wales, Florida.
