As part of the
#OVCforChange initiative, OVC student-athletes, coaches and administrators will engage in dialogue to help shape a course of action and invoke change on a variety of social issues impacting their lives.
This week's feature is with Murray State assistant men's basketball coach
Casey Long. Long is in his fourth season with the Racers program and has been the part of three-straight OVC regular season championships and two OVC Tournament titles. Long is a native of Leesville, Louisiana and played collegiately at Chattanooga.
Why is it important to be an advocate for social change/justice?
"For the betterment of the future of not only the student athlete but society as a whole. As a conference and on a personal level we should continue the fight for equality as a whole so everyone is treated equally and fairly."
What are the responsibilities of the individual in regard to issues of social justice?
"The two main responsibilities in my opinion are to make sure we are informed on issues groups of people may have and speak out against racism in any form."
What should we be doing as a society to combat social inequality?
"Providing opportunities within our control for groups of people underrepresented. Also with organizations and companies we may have a connection to, have conversations and inclusion as well for meaningful changes going forward."
What other emotions would you like to express about the current state of our society?
"I feel the current state of our society needs fewer social media conversations with a lack of emotion and more face-to-face conversation with positive emotion. We need to preach more unity no matter your background and all continue the fight against racism in any form or fashion. Right and wrong has no color."
