BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference has announced the implementation of a non-partisan voter awareness initiative. The OVC and its 12 member institutions are committed to the education of voter registration and participation for all student-athletes, coaches, administration and fans in the upcoming November general election.
The initiative is a result of discussions held by the OVC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the league’s Social Justice Working Group, which includes administrators, coaches and student-athletes.
The purpose of the initiative is to educate student-athletes on the importance of voting and exercising their civic responsibility leading up to, on, and beyond election day. This initiative will also provide non-partisan resources to promote voter awareness.
The OVC has created a web page at
www.OVCSports.com/Vote to provide voting resources to support to the initiative. This page includes links to check voter registration status, register to vote, get information about absentee ballots and receive election reminders.
Last week the NCAA Division I Council adopted legislation to specify that all countable athletically related activities (including but not limited to games, practices, training, film work, etc.) shall be prohibited on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November every year going forward. This legislation was proposed by the NCAA Division I SAAC with the goal of providing student-athletes with more opportunities to participate in civic engagement (e.g., voting, volunteering, community service).
