As part of the
#OVCforChange initiative, OVC student-athletes, coaches and administrators will engage in dialogue to help shape a course of action and invoke change on a variety of social issues impacting their lives.
This week's feature is with Morehead State senior rifle athlete
Ryan Hinson. Hinson, who hails from Rock Hill, South Carolina, earned first-team All-OVC in smallbore last season. He has previously qualified for the Junior Olympics in both rifle disciplines and been an OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll selection as well as a CRCA Scholastic All-American.
Why is it important to be an advocate for social change/justice?
“As the world changes and becomes more aware of injustices to certain populations we must be supportive of real change. There are many problems with the world today and while we can’t fix everything in our lifetime, we must do our best to push for equality when we see there is none.”
What are the responsibilities of the individual in regard to issues of social justice?
“I believe everyone on this planet has a responsibility to love and be kind to one another. If this can truly be accomplished in an individual, then everything else will follow.”
What should we be doing as a society to combat social inequality?
“As a society we must be supportive and understanding. Have an open dialogue between all sides of an issue and just be kind to one another. We must stick to a core set of values that the society as a whole can buy into.”
What other emotions would you like to express about the current state of our society?
“Personally, I just believe that there is so much animosity on all sides of social, political, and economical issues. I believe we must really investigate our nation’s core values and ours as well. We must ask what we can do to repair the state of society and do it with love and care.”
