As part of the
#OVCforChange initiative, OVC student-athletes, coaches and administrators will engage in dialogue to help shape a course of action and invoke change on a variety of social issues impacting their lives.
This week's feature is with Morehead State senior softball player
Alexis Strother. A native of Lebanon, Ohio, Strother hit .410 with two home runs while also pitching eight innings in the shortened 2020 season.
Why is it important to be an advocate for social change/justice?
"We have a voice and have the right to say our opinions, so why not use it and spread awareness to help others that feel injustice be heard. There is no shame in spreading awareness for any type of injustice."
What are the responsibilities of the individual in regard to issues of social justice?
"Us as individuals are responsible in making sure that we feel heard and we are doing everything we can to make people aware. If we hear inappropriate slang or see someone being mistreated that we are able to speak up and stand up for that person."
What should we be doing as a society to combat social inequality?
"Same as question number two, standing up and speaking up if we see something that doesn’t seem or sound right."
What other emotions would you like to express about the current state of our society?
"Mostly just spreading awareness. There are a lot of uneducated people out there, including myself, who could just use that little push to go in a direction that is comfortable for them to stick up for something they believe in."
