EIU's Sweeney Selected in First Round of 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft

Eastern Illinois All-American shortstop Trey Sweeney was selected by the New York Yankees with the 20th pick of the First Round of the 2021 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Sweeney is just the third OVC player selected in the First Round, joining Morehead State pitcher Drew Hall (No. 3 overall in 1984 by the Cubs) and Eastern Kentucky pitcher Christian Friedrich (No. 25 overall in 2008 by the Rockies).

He is the third EIU player taken the in the First Round, joining Tim Pyznarski (1981 – Oakland) and Stan Royer (1988 – Oakland), both before EIU joined the OVC. Sweeney is the highest EIU pick since pitcher Tyler Kehrer was selected 48th overall in Comp Round A by the Angels (2009).

Sweeney was named an All-American by five different outlets following the season, including earning first-team honors from the ABCA, Baseball America and Perfect Game. Sweeney, the OVC Player of the Year, finished the regular season ranked in the Top 50 nationally in 11 different categories including seventh in on-base percentage (.522), ninth in walks (46) and 13th in RBI (58). In 48 games Sweeney hit .382 hit 65 hits, 52 runs, 10 doubles, 14 home runs and a .712 slugging percentage while striking out only 24 times in 170 at-bats.

He was a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award and a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Award. He was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team after compiling a 3.61 GPA in accounting.

This year there are 20 rounds in the MLB Draft, down from the traditional 40 rounds prior to last year. The 2nd through 10th Rounds will be held Monday with the 11th through 20th Rounds held on Tuesday.
