Eastern Illinois men's and women's golf coach
Mike Moncel has announced that he will be retiring from the Panthers program after a quarter century leading the program through different stints.
Moncel first coached the EIU golf programs from 1995-98 then returned to the position coaching both the men's and women's program since the 2004 academic year.
During his time with the program he has coached men's and women's teams that have posted the school record for best 18-hole team score, best 36-hole team score and best 54-hole team score. In addition his players own the top individual season scoring average in school history for both genders.
A respected teaching professional, Moncel has coached players to national success in addition to 14 All-Ohio Valley Conference performers, one Academic All-American and the 2009 OVC Women's Individual Medalist – Carrie Riordan. More recently, Moncel coached Ryanne Jackson who finished second at the inaugural USGA Adaptive Open in 2022.
"I have been a part of EIU for more than a quarter century. I truly loved my time as Coach, Fan and Friend of this great community," said Moncel. "I have worked with so many wonderful people over the years. I am grateful and blessed and say thank you to all of you. I wish you all well and Go Panthers."
"Mike (Moncel) has been synonymous with Eastern Illinois golf for the last 25 years. He has been a great ambassador of our athletic department and a great teacher of the game of golf. We wish Mike and his family the best during this next phase of their lives," said EIU Athletic Director Tom Michael. "We will now be opening the search for next Panthers golf head coach."
