OVC Programs Continue Marked Improvement in NCAA Graduation Success Rates (GSR)

NCAA Press Release on GSR

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – In the most recent release of Graduation Success Rates (GSR) by the NCAA, Ohio Valley Conference teams continue to show success with student-athletes graduating at record rates.

GSR was created in 2002 in response to Division I college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students beyond what the federal graduation rate measures. The federal rate counts any student who leaves a school as an academic failure, even if the student enrolls at another school. Also, the federal rate does not recognize students who enter schools as transfer students.

The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation provides a more accurate measurement of student-athlete success.

The figures released this year are for student-athletes who entered college in 2018. Nationally the GSR was at 90 percent.

The OVC's total GSR was 85 percent. That number has held steady over the past four cycles of data and is 24 percent higher than the Federal Rate.

The sport of women's basketball had a GSR of 89, which is 36 points better than the Federal Rate..

Men's basketball had a percentage of 85 percent, nine percent better than in 2022. Overall that mark was 54 percent better than the Federal Rate.

The sport of baseball came in at 86 percent, 42 percent better than the Federal Rate.

Football came in at 72 percent, the same percentage as a year ago. That mark is 25 percent better than the Federal Rate.
