WIU Men's Soccer Coach Dr. Eric Johnson Announces Retirement

Western Illinois University has announced that longtime men's soccer head coach Dr. Eric Johnson, the winningest coach in program history, is retiring following a distinguished 29-year career leading the Leathernecks.

During his tenure, Johnson guided Western Illinois to six NCAA Tournament appearances, four regular-season conference titles, and six conference tournament championships across the Mid-Continent Conference, the Summit League, and the Ohio Valley Conference. He was named Conference Coach of the Year five times, solidifying his legacy as one of the most successful coaches in WIU athletics history. Johnson also served as WIU's women's soccer head coach from 2016–2021, embracing the challenge of leading both programs concurrently.

"The decision to step down was really hard," Johnson said. "I still have a love for the game and for coaching. That made the decision tough, but I know this is the right time."

"For 29 seasons Coach Johnson has led this program, and led it very successfully, EJ has completed our transition into the Ohio Valley Conference with two conference tournament appearances and has the program positioned for continued success. His leadership will be missed." stated Director of Athletics Paul Bubb.

Johnson plans to remain involved with the Leatherneck soccer program in a volunteer role while also spending more time with his grandchildren and enjoying hunting, fishing, and woodworking.
