WESTERN ILLINOIS 90, OMAHA 41
MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois put together a complete performance on both ends of the floor Saturday afternoon, rolling past Omaha, 90–41, inside Western Hall in Macomb.
The Leathernecks set the tone early, opening the game with strong defensive pressure and efficient offense to take a 25–9 lead after the first quarter. WIU forced eight Omaha turnovers in the opening 10 minutes and capitalized with points in transition, building early separation behind balanced scoring and ball movement.
Western Illinois continued to apply pressure in the second quarter, outscoring the Mavericks 27–9 to carry a commanding 52–18 advantage into halftime. The Leathernecks dominated the paint during the first half, consistently getting high-percentage looks at the rim while holding Omaha to just nine made field goals before the break. WIU also turned defense into offense, finishing the half with 24 points off turnovers.
The momentum carried into the third quarter as Western Illinois maintained control on both ends. The Leathernecks pushed the pace, scoring in transition and continuing to attack inside, while limiting Omaha's opportunities. WIU won the third quarter 19–12, extending the lead to 71–30 heading into the final period.
With the outcome well in hand, Western Illinois stayed steady in the fourth quarter, matching Omaha's energy while continuing to rotate players and keep pressure on the Mavericks defensively. The Leathernecks closed the game with a 19–11 final-quarter edge to seal the 49-point victory.
Allie Meadows led the way for WIU with a game-high 18 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers, while adding three steals on the defensive end. Raegan McCowan followed with 17 points and five rebounds, consistently scoring around the basket. Addi Brownfield contributed 14 points, four rebounds, two steals, and two blocks, while Mia Nicastro recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds to anchor the interior.
Western Illinois finished the game shooting 53.6 percent from the field and totaled 56 points in the paint. The Leathernecks forced 25 Omaha turnovers and converted them into 33 points, while also holding advantages in fast-break points (18–2) and bench scoring (23–11).
Omaha was led by Sarai Estupiñan, who scored 15 points, knocking down three three-pointers. Ali Stephens added seven points and six rebounds for the Mavericks, who were limited to 31.4 percent shooting for the game.
With the win, Western Illinois improved to 8–1 on the season, continuing a strong start at home, while Omaha fell to 1–10.
TENNESSEE TECH 92, STEPHENS COLLEGE 53
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - It's one of those numbers that just kind of sneaks up on you. Tennessee Tech had played a lot of great competition in the Hooper Eblen Center, but as the calendar dates slipped across over the past two seasons, it wasn't surprising that the Golden Eagles had put together an impressive stretch.
With Tech's 92-53 victory over Stephens College on Saturday, the win gave the Golden Eagles their 24th straight win on their home court, setting a new program standard. Tech's last loss at the Hoop came on Feb. 3, 2024.
The win breaks the previous record of 23, stretching between Jan. 5, 1987, against Middle Tennessee until Jan. 11, 1989, against Vanderbilt for Bill Worrell's Tennessee Tech squads.
Tech (7-2) had a tough start in the opening quarter, shooting 31.3 percent from the field, hitting just five of its 16 shots. Stephens College (2-11), however, saw a window. The visiting Stars knocked down seven shots, draining a pair of 3-pointers and went 4-for-4 at the line to take a 20-12 lead over the Golden Eagles after the first 10 minutes of play.
The Stars didn't shine that brightly for long. Tech adjusted and responded with a 12-0 run to take a 24-20 lead and never looked back. The Golden Eagles outscored Stephens College 25-7 in the second quarter as Tech was 9-for-13 from the floor and the Stars only able to muster a 3-for-12 effort before halftime.
After that strong first-quarter start, Stephens College went 12-for-35 for the remainder of the game. With a .343 pace, that could have been strong enough to keep within reach, but the Golden Eagles were determined to prove that the first quarter was the exception, not the rule. In the final three quarters, Tech shot 29-for-44 – a 66-percent clip – to outscore the Stars 80-33.
Reghan Grimes collected her second consecutive double-double with a game-best 22 points and 10 rebounds. Grimes was 10-for-20 from the field, while also posting two assists and two steals.
Reagan Hurst scored 21 points on 6-for-8 shooting and 4-for-5 from 3-point range, sinking all five of her free-throw tosses. Hurst also had four rebounds and an assist.
Freshman Amaya Redd also scored a season-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting and 4-for-6 at the stripe, pulling down two rebounds, two assists, five steals and a block.
Lyriq Mastin and Cam Mathews each had a team-best four assists.
Tech forced 24 Stars turnovers, creating 43 points on those takeaways, while Stephens College was only able to turn 18 Golden Eagle giveaways into nine points – eight of those in the first half.
Quimari Shelton led the Stars with 16 points, while Taylor Teeple had 14 points.
