GAME NOTES: Tennessee State looks to bounce back from last week’s bitter loss at league-leading Eastern Illinois, while Murray State hopes to rebound from their blowout defeat at I-A Minnesota. TSU must try to avoid a letdown after the emotional loss, becuase the Tigers can possibly claim a berth in the I-AA playoffs by winning out. Murray State will try and get a big conference win after dropping games to Tennessee Tech and Eastern Kentucky in which they played well enough to win. These teams cobined for a whopping 102 points in last year’s game.

MUR OFFENSE: Billy Blanchard was a pleasant surprise at Minnesota last week, coming off the bench to run for 110 yards on 22 carries. He also led the team in receiving, with six grabs for 38 yards... Quarterback Stewart Childress threw for 205 yards in last week’s loss, giving him 1,490 for the year. However, he has thrown nine interceptions this season, tying him for the league high... Running back Garner Byars is averaging better than 94 all-purpose yards per game. He was injured in last week’s game but is expected to play on Saturday... Scoring just 12.5 points in its previous two games, the Racer offense broke a scoring drought by scoring 45 points in the win over Southeast Missouri. Ironically, the 45 points came on 370 total yards. MSU had 430 yards and 12 points at Tennessee Tech, and 385 yards and 13 points against Eastern Kentucky.

MUR DEFENSE: Murray State's defense is much-improved over last year, even if the numbers aren't obvious. While giving up 122 points (40.6 ppg) in the last three games, the MSU offense has been a major contributor. MSU's offense has given up at least one TD off a turnover in each of the last three games, all coming on interceptions... Against Division I-AA teams, MSU is giving up 160.0 yards per game on the ground, and in the last two games against Division I-AA foes, the defense is giving up just 63.5 yards rushing... In the five games against Division I-AA opponents, the defense has given up just 16.0 ppg.

Quarterback Shannon Harris is fifth in the nation in both total offense (299.4 yards per game) and points responsible for (18.0 points per game). He leads the OVC in both categories... Freshman Charles Anthony is fourth in the conference in rushing, averaging more than 79 yards a game on the ground... Receiver C.J. Johnson had a tremendous game last week, and he is second in the OVC in receiving yards with 629. Johnson averages 90 yards per game, and he has caught three TD passes.
