APSU's Chavez Receives Vernon Holland Memorial Award

Kelly A. Chavez of Austin Peay State University has been selected as the recipient of the 2001 Vernon Holland Memorial Award.

The $2,000 award is presented annually by the Gaylord Entertainment Center to a student pursuing a graduate degree in sports management at an Ohio Valley Conference institution. Recipients must possess a minimum 3.0 grade point average and exhibit outstanding performance and leadership qualities.

Chavez earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Austin Peay in May, and began work on a Master’s degree in Sports Administration in June. A native of San Dimas, Calif., she was a two-time member of the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was named to the APSU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll four times.

Chavez is a three-year starter at point guard for the Lady Govs’ women’s basketball team. Last season she led APSU and ranked second in the OVC with 5.7 assists per game, and also topped the squad with 59 steals. Her 178 total assists were a school season record and moved her into second place on the the Lady Govs’ career assists chart with 414. Chavez also contributed 6.7 points per game as Austin Peay captured its second OVC Tournament championship and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. She will complete her fourth year of eligibility this season.
