Maloney Added to EKU Hoops Staff


Richmond, KY -- Eastern Kentucky University head coach Travis Ford has added Tim Maloney as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball program, it was announced today.

Maloney comes to EKU after serving for the past six years as the Video Coordinator and Administrative Assistant Coach for Billy Donovan at the University of Florida.

“I look forward to working with Travis Ford and his staff. I have known Coach Ford for a few years and I think EKU basketball is in great hands,” said Maloney. “Coach Donovan has always had high praise for Coach Ford and I think they have very similar styles. Travis is working hard to create a great program at Eastern Kentucky and I’m really looking forward to being a part of that.”

Maloney came to Florida after a one-year stint as an assistant at the University of Buffalo. A Floral Park, New York native, Maloney was the head coach at Mariner High School in Cape Coral from 1993-96 and led the school to a combined 73-17 record, while four of his players went on to play Division I basketball. His final Mariner squad in 1995-96 posted a 33-3 record, advanced to the state championship game and ranked 16th nationally in the final USA Today polls. Maloney spent time as an on-the-floor assistant in 1998-99 when the Gator staff was shorthanded.

Maloney began his coaching career at Martin Lutheran High School in New York in 1984-85 was the head coach for two years before serving assistant shifts at Nyack College (NY), St. Thomas College (NY) and Mariner High School. Maloney spent the summer of 1997 assisting the Mexican National team prepare for the World University Games.

Maloney is a 1982 graduate of Manhattanville College where he was named the school's "Most Dedicated Athlete" after starring in soccer, baseball, basketball and cross country. He also played on the 1984 Athletes in Action team that toured South America.

“We’re very excited to have Tim as part of our staff because he brings a great deal of experience and knowledge of the game,” said Ford. “His extensive coaching in different parts of the country and around the world will bring us great benefits in recruiting. Tim is a great addition and he will help us continue to build the program and great tradition of Eastern Kentucky basketball.”

Maloney, a native of Queens, New York, is a 1978 graduate of Floral Park Memorial High School. He is married to the former Joanne Nilsson and the couple has one child, Thomas Joseph.
