OVC Players of the Week- November 3, 2009

Offensive
Andrea Meloff, F, 5'3, Fr., Rochester Hills, Mich. - Tennessee Tech
Meloff led Tennessee Tech's offense against Lipscomb as she scored both of the Golden Eagles' goals in the 2-1 win. It was her second two-goal game of the season and she now leads Tech in goals scored for the season with seven.

Defensive
Alex Rustad, MF, 5'4, Jr., Keller, Texas - Jacksonville State
Rustad tallied the assist on the game-winning goal by Amber DeLaney in Jacksonville State's 1-0 win over Austin Peay. She was also part of a defense that didn't allow the Lady Govs to score a goal. She finished the match with four shots, two of which were on-goal.

Co-Goalkeepers
Kristen Starkey, GK, 5'8, Fr., St. Paul, Mo. - Southeast Missouri
Starkey earned her seventh shutout of the season last week against SIU Edwardsville. She lowered her goals-against average to 0.81 for the season.

Aubrey Buehler, Fr, GK, 5'9, Waukesha, Wis. - UT Martin
Buehler lowered her season goals-against average to 0.82 with her fifth shutout of the season against Eastern Illinois. She has allowed just five goals in OVC play this year.

 

2009 Ohio Valley Conference Women's Soccer Team Notes

 

AUSTIN PEAY (1-13-4 overall, 0-6-2 OVC): Austin Peay concluded the 2009 campaign with a 1-0 overtime loss to Jacksonville State. Junior Carley Newman allowed one goal and made six saves in the match. The Lady Govs ended the season with a 1-13-4 overall mark while going 0-6-2 in the OVC.

EASTERN ILLINOIS (7-7-5 overall, 3-3-2 OVC): Eastern Illinois fell to UT Martin, 1-0, in a match that was moved to Terre Haute, Ind., due to unfavorable field conditions at Lakeside Field. Senior Jenny Williams allowed just one goal and made eight saves in the match.  Hillary Blake and Kaylin Lorbert were both named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District second team. EIU has now had at least one player make the Academic All-District team in eight of the last nine years. Eastern Illinois earned the fifth seed in the upcoming OVC Tournament and will face No. 4 Tennessee Tech in first round action on Thursday.

EASTERN KENTUCKY (5-10-3 overall, 2-3-3 OVC): Eastern Kentucky will be making its second straight trip to the OVC Tournament. The Colonels earned the sixth seed and will face No. 3 Murray State in the first-round on Thursday.

JACKSONVILLE STATE (8-10-0 overall, 2-6-0 OVC):  Jacksonville State defeated Austin Peay, 1-0, in overtime to conclude the 2009 season. The Gamecocks closed out the season winning its last two matches. Senior Amber DeLaney scored the game-winning goal. It was her team-leading eighth goal of the season and it was her JSU single-season record sixth game-winner. Junior Alex Rustard earn the assist on the score and was part of the defense that didn't' allow a goal. Freshman Ali Koenig didn't allow a goal and made four saves in the match. Jacksonville State finished the season with a 8-10 overall record while going 2-6 in the OVC.

MOREHEAD STATE (8-6-4 overall, 5-0-3 OVC): Morehead State earned a share of its first regular-season trophy and the right to host the 2009 OVC Soccer Tournament. The Eagles enter the tourney as the top seed and will receive a first-round bye. Morehead State will play the winner of the #4 Tennessee Tech/#5 Eastern Illinois match in the semifinals on Friday.

MURRAY STATE (8-8-2 overall, 5-2-1 OVC ): Murray State defeated Southeast Missouri, 1-0, before falling to SIU Edwardsville, 2-1. Before falling to the Cougars, the Racers had tallied four-straight shutouts. Junior Kalli McCoy scored the game-winning goal against the Redhawks. Sophomore Sophie Hargreaves played all 180 minutes and played a huge role in securing the Racers' fourth straight shutout against Southeast Missouri. Junior Tara Isbell allowed two goals while making 10 saves last week. Murray State earned the third seed in the upcoming OVC Tournament and will face No. 6 Eastern Kentucky in first round action on Thursday.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI (8-7-3 overall, 2-3-3 OVC): Southeast Missouri earned a split in its final two matches of the 2009 season. The Redhawks fell to Murray State, 1-0, and defeated SIU Edwardsville, 1-0. Freshman Kristen Starkey earned her seventh shutout of the season in the win over SIU Edwardsville and lowered her goals-against average to 0.81. Southeast Missouri finished the regular-season with an 8-7-3 overall mark and a 2-3-3 league record.

SIU EDWARDSVILLE (3-10-2 overall): SIU Edwardsville fell to Southeast Missouri, 1-0, in overtime before defeating Murray State, 2-1, to close out the 2009 season. Sophomore Brittany Bodziak scored the game-winning goal versus Murray State. Senior Kelly Humphrey also got in on the scoring against the Racers. The Cougars finished the year with a 3-10-2 overall mark.

TENNESSEE TECH (5-11-3 overall, 3-3-2 OVC): Tennessee Tech defeated Lipscomb, 2-1, last week. Freshman Andrea Meloff scored both of Tech's goals, marking her second two-goal game of the season. Sophomore Kaitlyn Thacker allowed just one goal while making seven saves in the match. Tennessee Tech earned the fourth seed in the upcoming OVC Tournament and will play No. 5 Eastern Illinois in the first round on Thursday.

UT MARTIN (9-6-0 overall, 6-2-0 OVC): UT Martin defeated Eastern Illinois, 1-0, to earn a share of its first regular-season title. Freshman Kendyl Wilson scored the game-winning goal to give her a team-leading four scores for the year. Junior Danielle Rogers anchored a defense that did not give up a goal in the match. Freshman Aubrey Buehler lowered her goals-against average to 0.82 with her fifth shutout of the season. UT Martin is the second seed in the upcoming OVC Tournament and received a first-round bye. The Skyhawks will face the winner of the #3 Murray State/#6 Eastern Kentucky match in the semifinals on Friday.

 

OVC News and Notes

 

NEW OVC TOURNEY FORMAT: In the past the first round games  have been held on the campus sites of the No. 3 and 4 seeds, with regular-season champion hosting the semifinals and finals. This year the entire tourney will be held on the campus of the regular-season champion. The three-day event will take place Nov. 5-6 and 8.
