TOLEDO, Ohio - Toledo scored four times in the first half and added two more in the second half and defeated Morehead State 6-2 in soccer action Friday night at Scott Park in Toledo, Ohio. The loss drops the Eagles' record to 0-3-0 on the season. Toledo improves to 2-1-0.
The Rockets started the scoring in the 10th minute when Erin Flynn beat Eagle goalkeeper Lily Meisner. In the 28th minute Brittany Hensler put a goal in the back of the net as the Rockets jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The ensuing eight minutes would not bode well for the Eagles as the Rockets snuck in two more goals in the 35th and 37th minute.
Morehead State had chances early in the match, in the seventh minute freshman Lindsey Oettle launched a ball that hit the post and Jillian Birchmeier had her shot blocked.
The Eagles and the Rockets played it even in the second half as they traded goals throughout the period. Alyssa Nacke in the 46th minute scored her first career goal on an assist by Erin Adams and then Toledo's Hensler scored her second goal of the game in the 53rd minute. In the 56th minute Devan Jordon took a pass from Birchmeier and fired a shot past Toledo goalkeeper Vicki Traven and Molly Cantwell finished the scoring for the Rockets in the 88th minute as she took a pass from Sarah Blake and snuck it into the back of the net.
Toledo outshot Morehead State 19-11 and had eight corner kicks to MSU's three. Lily Meisner finished with two saves and Katie Blevins made one save in relief action.
Morehead State travels to Akron on Sunday to battle the Zips at Lee Jackson Field.
KANSAS 3, EATERN KENTUCKY 0
LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Eastern Kentucky University women's soccer team was shut out at Kansas, 3-0, on Friday night at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex. The Jayhawks scored in the 13th, 41st and 66th minutes en route to a season-opening victory. With the loss, the Colonels fall to 1-2-0 on the year.
Just 13 minutes into the game, Caitlin Noble scored off a corner kick from Erin Lewis to give Kansas an early lead. Four minutes before the first half ended, the Jayhawks scored off another corner kick as Caroline Kastor took a pass from Erin Ellefson and scored from the top of the box to make it 2-0 heading into halftime.
Whitney Berry provided the proverbial dagger in the second half when she received a pass from Kastor and buried one from about 22 yards out.
Kansas outshot EKU on the night, 20-6. Senior Courtney Nestor and sophomore Deja Tennon were the only Colonels to attempt a shot on goal.
Senior Stephanie Lynch played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded five saves on the night.
The Colonels will try to bounce on Sunday afternoon when they face SIU Edwardsville. EKU is 2-0 all-time against the Cougars.
SOUTH FLORIDA 4, MURRAY STATE 2
MURRAY, Ky. - The Murray State women's soccer team dropped the opening contest of the Racer Classic in a 4-2 defeat to USF Friday afternoon at Cutchin Field in its first home match of the season.
Chelsea Klotz tallied her first of two goals for the Bulls on the afternoon in the 41st minute to give South Florida a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
After USF (2-0-0) increased its lead to two after halftime, Maja Nordahl cut it to one off a feed from Rachel Wright to score a brilliant goal from 35 yards out that found the upper right corner of the net in the 68th minute. It was just the second career goal of the junior defender's career and MSU's first of the season.
Klotz recorded her second goal just two minutes later to build the lead up to two, and USF put the match out of reach in the 84th minute after two consecutive shots proceeded to ricochet off the left post and crossbar before being scored for the fourth goal of the match.
Sophie Hargreaves added one final goal for the Racers in the last minute, findind the back of the net from around 25 yards out as she placed it above the outstretched arms of the keeper in the center of the goal.
MSU (0-1-2) was outshot 18-12 in the match with the Bulls putting nine shots on net to the Racers' four.
The Racers return to Cutchin Field Sunday, Aug. 29, at 2:30 p.m. in the final match of the Racer Classic against Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs were defeated 9-1 by Southeastern Missouri in the second game Friday.
AUSTIN PEAY 1, WESTERN ILLINOIS 0
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A penalty kick by freshman Tatiana Ariza was the difference-maker in Austin Peay State University's 1-0 win against Western Illinois at the Lady Govs Invitational, Friday.
Austin Peay moves to 3-0, improving the program's best-ever start. Western Illinois, meanwhile, falls to 0-1-1 Tatiana Ariza's penalty kick came after freshman Emily Kink earned a foul inside the box on an attempt to beat a Western Illinois defender off the dribble. Tatiana Ariza made the kick in the 43rd minute to give Austin Peay a 1-0 lead at the half that would stand.
Credit a rock-solid defense for the team's third consecutive shut out to open the season. After allowing only six shots in the first two games, Austin Peay posted another strong defensive effort against the Leathernecks. With sophomore Laurena Robinson filling in for the injured Jazzmine Chandler, along with senior Hannah Jones and freshman Corey Osborn anchoring the back line, Western Illinois managed eight shots with four on goal.
Austin Peay out-shot Western Illinois 14-8, including a 7-4 shots-on-goal advantage. Tatiana Ariza led the Lady Govs with three shots, all on goal, while senior Monique Wong added two shots, both on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Carley Newman was untested in the first half, facing only one shot and nothing on goal. Freshman keeper Haylee Shoaff played the second half and made four saves.
Austin Peay returns to action with a game on Sunday against Chattanooga to wrap up the Lady Govs Invitational.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 9, ALABAMA A&M 1
MURRAY, Ky. - The Southeast Missouri State women's soccer team continued to show off their offensive firepower with a 9-1 victory over Alabama A&M at the opening day of the Racer Classic in Murray, Kentucky. The goal output tied for the fourth-highest goal total in program history.
Six different players scored for the Redhawks (2-0) including two who scored multiple goals.
Senior Ashley Runion led the offensive charge, totaling nine points. She recorded her second career hat-trick and set a new career-best with three assists.
Freshman Amy Ward netted two goals and two assists.
The Redhawks scored the first goal of the game when Runion settled a pass from Stephanie Palmer and went upper left corner in the fifth minute.
The Bulldogs (0-3) countered with a Celeste Roberts goal in the 16th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
Freshman Signe' Novak would later score the eventual game-winner 11 minutes later when she scored off a Runion rebound.
Three minutes later sophomore Courtney Luehmann scored her first collegiate goal. After receiving a Runion pass at the top of the box, she fired a strike over the leaping goalkeeper and just under the crossbar.
Ward closed out the scoring in the first period with her first collegiate goal. Novak found Ward inside the box for a 4-1 lead.
Ward struck again in the second period. In the 51st minute, she weaved through the Bulldog defense and beat the goalkeeper for the unassisted goal.
Later in the period Runion and freshman Jacey Boyko scored goals with :50 seconds of each other. Runion's goal came courtesy of Siobhan Symington and Taylor Thomas.
Ward was credited with the assist after delivering a perfectly executed flip throw-in that Boyko headed in to make it 7-1.
Ward's flip throw-in was again used on Palmer's goal in the 86th minute. Her throw floated into the box and Runion pushed it towards the goal with a header that Palmer finished from two feet out.
The Redhawks final goal came 1:03 later. Runion chipped in a Taylor Byrd pass from ten yards out to complete the hat trick.
For Runion, her three goals gave her 19 in her career which ties Lisa Schweppe for third on the school's career charts. Her three assists also tied her with Schweppe for fourth with 13 career assists. She also moved into a tie for fourth with 51 career points.
The Redhawks outshot the Bulldogs 27-6 including 16-3 on goal. The win improved them to 4-0 all-time against their Southwestern Athletic Conference opponent.
18 of the 27 shots came in the second half as the Redhawks outscored the Bulldogs 5-0.
Freshman Ashton Aubuchon improved to 2-0 in the nets as she recorded two saves in 57 minutes of action. Fellow freshman goalie Jessica Grindstaff replaced her in goal.
The team will look to extend their three-game winning streak on Sunday against South Florida in the final day of the Racer Classic.
UT MARTIN 1, LIPSCOMB 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Playing in their second consecutive double overtime match in the last five days, freshman Abi Sanvee made sure The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team wouldn't endure another 110-minute tie, as the Bartlett native found the back of the net just 22 seconds into the double overtime period to give the Skyhawks their first win of the 2010 campaign, 1-0 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
With the victory, the Skyhawks won their sixth straight match against Lipscomb, as they have not allowed a goal to the Lady Bisons in the last five matches - spanning over 450 minutes.
Sanvee, a former standout at Evangelical Christian School in Memphis, emerged from a scramble in front of the net to scoot the ball into the back of the net. Senior Jenni Duffy was credited with the assist for UT Martin, who outshot Lipscomb 18-10.
Making her first career start, UT Martin freshman goalkeeper Elise Applegate earned the victory, accumulating five saves.
Applegate was put to the test early, making a save at the 8:21 mark on the first of two shots by Lipscomb's Kate Spellman.
Freshman Hannah McGowen attempted the Skyhawks' first shot attempt at the 18:37 mark, but the shot was blocked. McGowen continued her relentless pursuit of the goal by attacking the goal seven minutes later, but the shot went wide.
Both teams exchanged one more shot apiece before the first half ended, as both teams struggled to find any offensive rhythm. Each side was only able to produce three shots in the first stanza, with just two in goal.
Brooke Robertson and Duffy led UT Martin coming out of the halftime break, both attempting two shots in the first 10 minutes to apply the pressure on Lipscomb goalkeeper Erin Zerio.
Applegate successfully scooped up her second opportunity of the night, saving a shot off the foot of Danielle Bethke in the 56th minute. The Skyhawk offense stalled until leading scorer Rosaelia Loza took two shots in a span of 8:35, but both shots missed wide.
The teams swapped shots until both made late pushes to win the match in regulation. Skyhawk midfielder Melissa Govea attempted a header at the 81:34 mark but Zerio was there for the save. Just 71 seconds later, Meghan McGuire found some space and fired a shot on goal, but Applegate collected her third save of the evening.
For the last four minutes of regulation, the Skyhawks aggressively attacked Zerio, as Loza, McGowen, Mary Thompson and Kendyl Wilson each tallied shots. However, none of the Skyhawk attempts were successful, and the Skyhawks were headed for their second overtime match in as many weeks.
Both squads attempted two shots in the first overtime period, but no one could find the goal. Applegate came up with yet another clutch save at the 99:10 mark, ensuring the match would head into a second overtime.
It was there that Sanvee became the hero of the night, securing the game-winner to give head coach Phil McNamara his first UT Martin victory.
The Skyhawks will look to keep the momentum going this Sunday, when they will travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on the Missouri State Bears.
VALPARAISO 1, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
VALPARAISO, Ind. - Valparaiso scored the game's lone goal in the 11th minute and rode the early lead to a 1-0 victory against Eastern Illinois women's soccer Friday evening.
The Crusaders' Lauren Gagnon redirected a cross by Luisa Desario past EIU goalkeeper Kaylin Lorbert and into the net 10 minutes and 10 seconds into the game. It was Gagnon's first goal of the season. Desario also hit the crossbar in the 27th minute.
The Panthers (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season while Valpo improved 2-0. It was the first home night game in the history of the Crusaders women's soccer program.
Hillary Blake and Caitlin Greene were credited with the Panthers' two shots on goal. Corner kick chances were at a premium for both teams. Eastern was limited to one and Valpo had only two. The Crusaders had an 8-6 edge in shots.
Lorbert finished with two saves. Sam Balek, Hillary Blake, Jessica Blake and Erika Prazma went the distance among the EIU field players. Ashley Eck logged 51 minutes to lead the reserves.
Kayla Doran started in place of Kristin Germann, who came off the bench for the first time in her EIU career. Germann is nursing a strained muscle and the coaching staff chose to limit her minutes. Germann started the second half and played 26 minutes.
Eastern returns to action Sunday when it returns home to host Eastern Michigan.
NEW MEXICO STATE 2, JACKSONVILLE STATE 1
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Jacksonville State soccer team surrendered a pair of second half goals as it dropped a 2-1 decision to New Mexico State in the first day of the Hotel Encanto Aggie Classic, hosted by NMSU.
The Aggies (1-0-1) scored the equalizing goal just moments after the halftime intermission. Mary Kate Koziol drilled a shot from 20 yards in the 46th minute. NMSU's Yolanda McMillion registered the eventual game-winning goal 17 minutes later with an unassisted goal from ten yards away. Both teams combined for 40 shot attempts with the Aggies taking 29 shots against the Gamecock defense. Jax State (0-3) turned in 11 shots, seven on goal.
JSU junior forward Chelsea Pelletier finished with six of the squad's 11 shots, which set a new career mark for the Fort Worth, Texas-native. JSU's goal came off the foot of Nathalee Lariviere and resulted in the Gamecocks' lone goal. The sophomore from Ontario, Canada gave the Red and White an early 1-0 lead just 94 seconds into the contest. Sophomore Eli Arthur dished out the assist on Lariviere's goal. Arthur set up Lariviere with a cross from ten yards out. JSU employed the two keeper system with Katelyn Geddings earning the starting nod. Ali Koenig was in goal for the final 45 minutes. The tandem combined for nine saves.
Carlson's squad will visit White Sands National Monument on Saturday.
JSU concludes the Hotel Encanto Aggie Classic on Sunday, Aug. 29 against North Texas. Game time is set for Noon CST. UNT blanked Prairie View A&M 6-0 earlier on Friday. NMSU will take on the Panthers of PVAM following the JSU-UNT affair.
