SIU EDWARDSVILLE 2, EASTERN KENTUCKY 0
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer improved to 2-0 in the early season after a 2-0 victory over Eastern Kentucky at Korte Stadium Sunday.

The Cougars put their numbers up on the scoreboard early with both goals coming in the first 18 minutes of the game.

Devon Thomas scored her first goal of the season at 6:01 on a header off a corner kick. Freshman Sarah Doggendorf served a perfect corner kick to the middle of the box to an open Thomas from 10 yards out. Thomas headed the ball into the right side of the goal past EKU goalkeeper Stephanie Lynch.

Chelsey Johnston made it 2-0 at 17:27 when she got open in the right side of the box. Johnston scored from 10 yards out on a quick pass from Brittany Bodziak.

SIUE goalkeeper Claire Lovercheck posted her second straight shutout of the season. She finished with six saves overall. Two of those came off a pair of shots within the first three minutes of the game from EKU's Brittany Nomady.

Both shots were within 15 yards of the goal in the box.

The Cougars and the Colonels, now 1-3 overall, were even on shots in the first half with SIUE taking just a 7-6 edge. The second half, however, was mostly SIUE as the Cougars outshot EKU 10-2.

Just as it did in the season opener against South Dakota, SIUE's depth came into play. Thirteen different SIUE players recorded shots. Bodziak, Hope Jones, Meagan Iffrig, and Rachel Brcic recorded two shots each for the Cougars.

NORTH TEXAS 2, JACKSONVILLE STATE 0
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - A pair of second half goals by North Texas handed Jacksonville State a 2-0 loss in the final match of the New Mexico State-hosted Hotel Encanto Aggie Classic on Sunday afternoon.

The shutout was the fourth-straight for the Gamecocks as they fell to 0-4 on the season. UNT remained perfect on the season at 4-0. JSU will look for its first win of the season next weekend as it travels to the state of Mississippi to face Mississippi Valley State and Jackson State.

After a scoreless 45 minutes, the Mean Green of UNT broke the deadlock with an Ellen Scarfone goal in the 68th minute. Scarfone connected from the left center of the box for the first goal. Carly McDowell was credited with the assist. UNT added it second goal of the contest as Alicia Reyes scored on a rebound off of JSU keeper Ali Koenig.

UNT minimized JSU's scoring opportunities throughout the affair as the Red and White managed just three shots in the match. Kaitlin Manns and Austen Stoelting each registered shots on goal for the Gamecocks. UNT had ample scoring chances in the contest with 19 total shots, 12 coming in the final 45 minutes. JSU's Koenig posted ten saves, eight in the second half.

EASTERN MICHIGAN 1, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
CHARLESTON, Ill. - The game's first corner kick opportunity didn't come until the 71st minute but Eastern Michigan capitalized on it, scoring the lone goal of the day en route to defeating Eastern Illinois women's soccer, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

Stephanie Pilarski placed the ball perfectly in the top right 90 of the net after Julie Maheu flicked a Stephanie Janssens corner kick. It was Pilarski's first goal of the season.

The Panthers (2-2) were shutout at home for the first time since September 2008, ending their streak of 14 consecutive games with a goal at Lakeside Field. The Eagles (2-0-1) also ended EIU's home unbeaten streak at nine (6-0-3) games. Eastern Michigan has won five consecutive games in Charleston and shutout EIU for the third year in a row.

The Panthers had three quality scoring chances early in the second half but were unable to capitalize. EIU enjoyed a 14-11 edge in shots, putting eight on goal. EMU goalkeeper Monique Budani made seven saves and defender Amanda Marsh cleared a shot by Kristin Germann off the goal line in the 49th minute.

Kaylin Lorbert made five saves in goal for the Panthers but had to leave the game in the 84th minute after suffering the worst of a three-player collision. Jessica Taldone finished out the contest. Lorbert made a pair of nice saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless.

Sam Balek and Hillary Blake went the distance among the EIU field players. Lauren Hoppensteadt logged 63 minutes to lead the reserves and put all three of her shots on goal.

The Panthers were very active in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Only a minute and a half into the second half, Kaitlin Sullivan missed high with a point blank shot after a left-to-right cross by Ashley Streid. Marsh made her team save with her head about two minutes later after Germann had lofted a shot over Budani's head that was bound for the left side of the net.

In the 53rd minute, Streid stole the ball from an EMU player near midfield and advanced it into the 18-yard box. But a defender eventually caught up with Streid to prevent a true breakaway. Streid got a shot off on the left side of the 18-yard box but Budani was able to snare the ball with a dive to her left.

Both EIU corner kick opportunities came in the final 11 minutes after the Eagles had taken the lead. Sullivan got her head on the first of the two corners but the ball sailed wide right.

Lorbert made her two finest saves in the 24th and 30th minutes. She made a nice one-v-one save on a shot by Paige Sheridan from the left flank and snared a one-touch shot by Chelsea Detrick above her head.

The Panthers lost both games this weekend in 1-0 fashion.

MISSOURI STATE 2, UT MARTIN 0
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team allowed two early goals this afternoon to the Missouri State Bears, and could not dig themselves out of that hole as the Skyhawks fell 2-0 at Plaster Field.

Brooke Robertson led the UT Martin offensive charge with four shot attempts (two on goal), while Rosaelia Loza attempted three shots (two on goal). Overall, the Skyhawks put six of their 11 shots on goal this afternoon.

The Bears wasted no time gaining an early lead. After Skyhawk goalkeeper Lauren MacKenzie was tested with a save 70 seconds into the match, Rachel Weimer was open in the box and took a pass from Katelyn Frederickson to find the back of the net just 2:05 into the match.

MacKenzie would earn another pair of saves in a span of 1:01 before the Bears added to their lead with a goal in the 17th minute. Brooke Williams stole the ball from a Skyhawk defender and beat MacKenzie from the edge of the box, finding an open net for a goal.

After another near-goal by Weimer at the 19:04 mark, freshman Elise Applegate was called upon to take over the Skyhawk goalkeeping duties.

Robertson would attempt UT Martin's first shot attempt at the 22:32 mark, but Missouri State goalkeeper Jessica Teahan was there for the save. That briefly jumpstarted the Skyhawk offense, as Robertson and Loza combined to fire the last three shots of the first stanza.

After Loza ended the first half with a shot on goal that forced Teahan to make a save, Loza opened the second half with another shot on goal just 34 seconds into the second half. The result was the same, however, as Teahan tallied her third save of the afternoon.

MacKenzie was back in goal for UT Martin to begin the second half, and she responded well with a save at the 52:27 mark. A little under two minutes later, Robertson applied more pressure on Teahan, but she once again scooped up a save. Missouri State then quickly took a run-out all the way down the field but MacKenzie earned another save on a shot by Weimer.

Emily Crye would get the next shot opportunity for UT Martin, but Teahan picked up another save at the 63:24 mark. Abi Sanvee - who secured the game-winning goal on Friday at Lipscomb - got another good look at the goal in the 69th minute but Teahan came away with the save.

MacKenzie would add her sixth, seventh and eighth saves on the day before the Skyhawks made a late offensive push. Robertson attempted a shot that went wide at the 88:21 mark, and Jenni Duffy took a shot with just 12 seconds left in the match, but it also sailed wide of the goal.

MOREHEAD STATE 3, AKRON 1
AKRON, Ohio - Erin Adams scored two goals in the first ten minutes and freshman forward Holly Tilley scored her first collegiate goal as the Morehead State soccer team defeated Akron 3-1 in a critical non-conference match Sunday afternoon in Akron.

The Eagles (1-3-0) entered the game losing their first three road games of the season, but picked up the crucial victory over Akron (1-1-0) gaining momentum for next Sunday's home opener.

Adams opened the scoring just three minutes into the match as she took control of a through ball from Devan Jordan and fired a shot from 12 yards out past Zips goalkeeper Jenny Wolbert. Just eight minutes later, Adams struck again as she scored her second goal of the game and her third of the season. Brittany Kiracofe was credited with the assist.

Akron down 2-0 early would put some heat back on the Eagles, as Jordan Baranowski rifled a laser from 22 yards out narrowly beating Eagle goalkeeper Lily Meisner which cut the MSU lead to one.

In the 57th minute following a Sarah Phillip corner kick, Tilley sealed the victory for the Eagles as she buried on in the back of the net and put the Eagles up 3-1.

Meisner played incredible as she notched six saves and thwarted three Akron shots that would have been possible game changers.

Morehead State picked up the intensity in their physical play as Phillip and Sam Toepfer received yellow cards and the Eagles had 11 total fouls.

MSU fired 11 shots in the match to Akron's 10 and the Eagles tallied seven kicks from the corner pocket, while the Zip's had five.

SOUTH FLORIDA 4, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 0
MURRAY, Ky. - The Southeast Missouri State women's soccer team suffered their first loss of the 2010 season on Sunday afternoon. The University of South Florida shutdown the Redhawks offense with a 4-0 win on the final day of the Racer Classic at Cutchin Field.

The high-powered Redhawks (2-1) offense was neutralized by a smothering Bulls defense (3-0).

Coming into the game the Redhawks averaged 27 shots per game. On Sunday they were held to seven shots while allowing their opponents 26 shots.

Chelsea Klotz scored two first-period goals, scoring off a header in the 20th minute and on a throughball from midfield in the 35th minute.

In the second period, the Bulls added goals by Venicia Reid in the 72th minute and Chantelle Goodson in the 74th minute.

Freshman Signe' Novak had the Redhawks only shot on goal late in the second half but was turned away by Kim Diaz.

Lauren Bozesky, Ashley Runion and Courtney Luehmann accounted for the other six Redhawk shots.

Freshman goalkeeper Ashton Aubuchon was solid in goal despite the four goals allowed. She recorded a season-high five saves. She fell to 2-1 on the season.

Bulls goalkeeper Nicole McClure improved to 3-0.

Klotz recorded a game-high seven shots, including five on goal.

Valorie O'Brien assisted on both of Klotz's goals.

AUSTIN PEAY 2, CHATTANOOGA 0
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University women's soccer team moved into unchartered territory with a 2-0 win against Chattanooga, Sunday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

In tying the program's longest winning streak (four games, set during the 2007 season), the Lady Govs improved to 4-0, extending the program's best-ever start. Chattanooga fell to 1-3 with the loss.

Going into the season, head coach Kelley Guth expected to see a number of freshmen contribute immediately. The extent of their contributions was put on display in Sunday's win.

Freshman forward Emily Kink scored the game's first goal in the 12th minute, off an assist by freshman Tatiana Ariza. Four minutes later, freshman Natalia Ariza was the beneficiary of a combination play from Tatiana Ariza and Kink to score the game's final goal.

As the game progressed, it turned into a physical matchup in every aspect. The 8-5 foul count, which favored Austin Peay, was not indicative of the game's physicality. At one point, three consecutive injury stoppages occurred in a five minute span.

This type match would have been a struggle for some of Guth's former teams, but this group of Lady Govs offers a variety of players with flexibility to play a number of positions. For a team that had only one sub for much of the 2009 slate, Guth played 18 players in the match, including freshman goalkeeper Haylee Shoaff for the entire second half.

Kink led Austin Peay with eight shots, five on goal, while Joceline Quiceno and Natalia Ariza each had three shots. Austin Peay outshot Chattanooga 18-7. The Lady Mocs' keeper Taylor Mangrum made eight saves.

The Lady Govs return to action on the road at the Troy Invitational with a noon, Friday, match against South Alabama.

MURRAY STATE 1, ALABAMA A&M 0
MURRAY, Ky. - The Murray State women's soccer team collected its first victory of the 2010 season Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 overtime win against Alabama A&M in the closing match of the Racer Classic.

Senior Laken Dirkes scored on a breakaway off a through ball past mid-field from teammate Hanna Moellerstad after 29 seconds of play in the overtime session.

The breakthrough came after the Racers were blanked in regulation after firing 29 shots with 17 shots-on-goal.

Kalli McCoy and Shauna Wicker combined to give MSU (1-1-2) its first near scoring attempts in the 28th minute. McCoy's shot attempt from the center of the box was deflected by Alabama A&M keeper Linda Aboagye to Wicker, who's shot was caught by Aboagye from the ground.

McCoy had a chance on net three minutes later on a breakaway down the left side, but her shot hit the outside of the post and deflected away.

Maja Nordahl narrowly missed her second goal of the weekend as she found the left post in the 73rd minute.

Nordahl and Wright led Murray State with five shots apiece as 11 different Racers tallied at least one shot.

MSU held the Bulldogs to six shots, five coming after halftime. Goalkeeper Tara Isbell recorded her third shutout of the season in four matches with two saves.

The Racers out-cornered Alabama A&M (0-4-0) by an 8-3 advantage.

The match was delayed for nearly 45 minutes in the first half due to lightning.

Murray State hits the road next weekend, traveling to Tulsa Sept. 3 for a 7:35 p.m. contest and 1:00 p.m. match on Sept. 5 against Oklahoma State. The Racers continue non-conference action Sept. 10 at home against IPFW.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE 2, TENNESSEE TECH 1
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -
The Golden Eagle soccer squad took their matinee game against Middle Tennessee State into 105 minutes of play Sunday afternoon on Blue Raider turf in Murfreesboro.

It was evident after the scoreless first half that the match-up between TTU and former OVC opponent MTSU would be hard-fought. Golden Eagle freshman keeper Becca Toler notched six saves in the first half as the defense came together to deny 11 shots from MTSU, while the offense combined for three shots on the other end during the first 45 minutes of the game.

Tech, looking to avenge their past two meetings with the Blue Raiders, came out strong in the second half to put the first goal of the game on the board. Sophomore midfielder Kerri Reid's unassisted goal in the 49th minute of the match marked the first for Tech in two meetings with MTSU.

With the game in control, the TTU defense came together to shut down the Blue Raider offense, holding them to five missed shots over the next 41 minutes of the game. Toler earned another three saves for a total of nine on the day, doubling her career total.

In the 90th minute however, Vanessa Mueggler broke through the backfield on a pass from Heidel Johannessen to tie the game at one all and send it into the first overtime period of the match.

In their first extra minute scenario of the season, Tech went nearly neck-and-neck with host MTSU, taking one shot to their two and holding the score at 1-1 through the first OT.

The 105th minute of the game favored the Blue Raiders, however, when Johannessen recorded her second assist of the game with a pass to Hope Suominen, whose hard shot on the ground bounced off of Toler's hands for the game-winner in the second sudden death period.

Golden Eagle senior Michelle Decker added two shots in on the match.

Tech will take on SEC powerhouse Vanderbilt on Friday in a night game in Nashville scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
