AUSTIN PEAY 1 SOUTH ALABAMA 0
TROY, Ala. - The streak continues for Austin Peay State University women's soccer team which claimed a 1-0 win against South Alabama, Friday, at the Troy Invitational.
This time it was freshman Tatiana Ariza scoring the game winner, just six seconds before the break. A shot by freshmen Andy Quiceno in the 43rd minute led to a pair of Lady Govs corner kicks as the first half clock ticked down. With a 10-second countdown in progress, freshman Corey Osborn's corner kick was scored by Tatiana Ariza to give APSU a 1-0 lead that would stand.
The Lady Govs outshot a talented South Alabama team 17-6, with a freshman trio of Joceline Quiceno (five shots), Andy Quiceno (four) and Tatiana Ariza (four) leading the attack. Senior Michelle Johnson came off the bench to record three shots, all on goal. Freshman striker Emily Kink left the game in the fifth minute after an on-field collision.
The win was Austin Peay third one-goal win, which is as many as the past three seasons combined. Last year, the Lady Govs lost seven one-goal games. According to head coach Kelley Guth, the work ethic and game plan haven't changed, the Lady Govs have just begun playing more effectively.
Austin Peay's defense also extended its scoreless streak to 450 consecutive minutes, but not without being challenged by the Jaguars. In only managing four shots on goal, it was Austin Peay keeper Carley Newman coming up big with two key stops in the first half.
Austin Peay puts its streak on the line with a 3 p.m., Sunday match against host Troy.
WRIGHT STATE 3, EASTERN KENTUCKY 0
RICHMOND, Ky. - The Eastern Kentucky University women's soccer team dropped its third straight game on Friday afternoon as the Colonels fell to Wright State, 3-0, at home. The loss drops EKU to 1-4-0 on the year while the win improves WSU to 2-2-0.
Familiar pitfalls plagued EKU in the game as the Colonels again fell behind early (WSU scored just two minutes into the game) and then allowed a goal off a corner kick later in the first half.
Head coach Lindsay Basalyga stressed after the game that playing WSU, even at home, was a tough challenge for her young team. The Raiders were picked to finish second in the Horizon League before the season began and came to EKU Soccer Field fresh off a 2-1 win at Middle Tennessee State last weekend.
Just 2:17 into the game, Amber Kasmer beat the EKU defense, received a pass from Brittany Persaud and got a shot past senior Stephanie Lynch to give the Raiders a very early 1-0 lead.
In the 18th minute, Persaud set up another goal as she found Bekah Bonny on a corner kick, who headed it in to put WSU up 2-0.
The Colonel defense clamped down after the second goal, until the 71st minute when Persaud scored a goal of her own, this one off an assist from Morgan Butler, to give the Raiders an insurance score.
EKU outshot WSU in the game, 12-8. The Colonels especially revved it up on the offensive end in the second half when they took 10 shots to the Raiders two.
Freshman Hillary Cooper led all Colonels with three shots while senior Carly Muller attempted two. Freshmen Nicole Donnelly and Kristan Paynter took the Colonels' only two shots on goal.
Junior Stephanie Murray and sophomore Hayley Wright played all 90 minutes of the game on the Colonel backline.
The Colonels return to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to play Valparaiso.
SIU EDWARDSVILLE 2, BALL STATE 0
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville collected its third straight win to start the 2010 season Friday with a 2-0 victory over Ball State at Korte Stadium.

SIUE's Kaci Harkey broke the early deadlock with her first goal of the season at 23:50.

The other goal came at 59:27 when Doggendorf tapped in a shot from three yards out among a crowd of players. Kourtney Price and Harkey provided quick passes on the goal.

The game was physical for both teams with SIUE being called for 18 fouls. Burton said he was pleased with SIUE's poise.

EASTERN ILLINOIS 0, GREEN BAY 0
GREEN BAY, Wis. - Goalkeeper Kaylin Lorbert made a season-high seven saves and posted her eighth career shutout, but Eastern Illinois women's soccer was also kept off the scoreboard in a scoreless draw with Green Bay Friday evening.
The Panthers (2-2-1) were shutout for a third consecutive game for the first time since September 2008. The scoreless draw was the ninth in program history and the first since 2008 at Austin Peay. But EIU had not played a nonconference opponent to a scoreless stalemate since Loyola in 2004.
The scoreless draw for Green Bay (1-1-2) was the second this season. The Phoenix also played Drake to double goose eggs in their regular-season opener. Eastern and Green Bay have played to a draw each of the last two seasons.
Lorbert made three of her seven saves in overtime. She also had two make a pair of saves in the game's first three and a half minutes. The senior has surrendered only two goals in 448 minutes so far this season, good for an impressive 0.40 goals against average.
Eastern was credited with only two shots on goal among its eight total shots. Green Bay also enjoyed an 8-3 edge in corner kicks. All three EIU corners came in a stretch of a minute and a half early in the second half. A header by Sam Balek was the lone shot the Panthers were credited with during that stretch.
Ashley Streid and Lauren Hoppensteadt were credited with EIU's shots in overtime. Streid forced UWGB goalkeeper Maddie Drusch to make a save in the 92nd minute and Hoppensteadt missed high in the 95th minute.
Hillary Blake, Caitlin Greene and Balek went the distance among the EIU field players. Streid (105 minutes), Hoppenstead (100) and Kaitlin Sullivan (98) also played more than the standard 90 minutes. Ashley Eck logged 86 minutes to lead the reserves and Sarah Rusk (21 minutes) made her season debut.

Tara Corcoran finally helped the Roadrunners break through just a couple minutes later. Taking an assist from Tyler Shirk, her header found the upper right portion of the net, giving CSU Bakersfield a 1-0 lead before the half.
MacKenzie tallied another save at the 50:49 mark of the second half, and the Skyhawk offense came back with two quick shots in 1:24, but both went wide. Robertson's shot at the 63:49 mark went wide, and MacKenzie was perfectly positioned for another save in the 68th minute.

The Skyhawks didn't quit, as they gave one last valiant effort to force overtime. Loza put a shot on goal at the 87:02 mark, but Montano swatted the shot away. Sanvee came up with the loose ball but her shot went wide. With the Skyhawks down to their final seconds, Duffy unleashed a corner kick with 89:42 on the clock and found Brandon, but her shot wound up in the hands of Montano and CSU Bakersfield came away with the win.
UT Martin will look to rebound this Sunday, Sept. 5, when they will head to Los Angeles to take on Loyola-Marymount. The match is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
