EASTERN KENTUCKY 80, LONGWOOD 62
RICHMOND, Ky. - Eastern Kentucky scored on its first five
possessions and made seven of its first 10 shots to jump out to a 14-0 lead in
an 80-62 non-conference victory over Longwood
on Wednesday at McBrayer Arena.
The Lady
Colonels (10-9) shot over 60 percent for much of the first half before
finishing 18-of-32 for 56.3 percent. Longwood
(5-19) missed its first 10 shots from the field. The Lancers didn't get
on the board until a free throw at the 14:45 mark and didn't connect on their
first field goal until 13 minutes remained in the first half.
A lay-up by
Jade Barber stretched the EKU lead to 15, 18-3, with 13:36 to play before
intermission. Barber had 10 points and eight rebounds in the first 20
minutes of action.
Longwood got within single digits for 23 seconds late in the
first half before Eastern went on a 7-1 run to go back up by 15. Carla
Booth's three-pointer made it 36-21 at the 4:01 mark. The Lady Colonels
led by as many as 19 before taking a 17-point, 43-26, advantage into the locker
room at halftime.
The Lancers
shot 26.7 percent (8-for-30) and scored 10 of their first half points at the
free throw line.
Longwood's Brittanni Billups scored the first basket of the
second half, but Eastern Kentucky scored on its first six possessions to key a
13-2 run that put the game away. Barber scored seven of the 13
points. Her lay-up and free throw with 17:10 left to play put the home
team up by 26, 56-30.
Barber led
EKU with 19 points and 17 rebounds, her second straight double-double and sixth
of the season. Marie Carpenter scored 18 points, grabbed six rebounds and
dished out three assists. Alex Jones contributed seven points and eight
rebounds. LaRa'e Allen added nine points and seven boards.
Eastern
scored 40 points in the paint and out-rebounded Longwood
by 21, 52-31. The Lady Colonels were slowed a bit by a season-high 27
turnovers.
Crystal
Smith led the Lancers with 18 points on 5-for-21 shooting from the field.
Billups added 17 points.
