BELMONT 3, AUSTIN PEAY 1
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Belmont volleyball (11-14, 7-4) defeated Austin Peay in four sets, 22-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-16, Tuesday evening in the Curb Event Center.
Belmont jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the opening set. Both teams put together short runs exchanging points back and forth. The Bruins scored five unanswered points before the Lady Govs silenced their run with a 3-0 run to bring the set within two.
Austin Peay (13-14, 6-5) tied the set at 20-all and took a 24-20 lead before junior Allison McCoy (Huntington Beach, Calif.) silenced their run. The Lady Governors took the first set, 25-22.
The Lady Govs took an early lead of the second set but Belmont remained close. Behind kills from sophomore Scarlet Gable (Munford, Tenn.) the Bruins were able to tie the set at 10-all and 12-all. Behind kills from sophomore Alex Martin (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and Gable, Belmont took a three-point lead.
A 2-0 run gave the Bruins a 24-19 lead, but Austin Peay held off Belmont before McCoy ended the set 25-21, with the match tied at one-set each.
After the break, both teams battled back and forth, keeping the set close.
Consecutive kills from junior Jen Myer (New Braunfels, Texas) and an attack error on Austin Peay, gave Belmont a two-point lead.
Myer sparked a run with four unanswered points before the Lady Govs answered with their own 3-0 run and bringing Austin Peay within one-point of the Bruins, 18-17. Belmont extended their lead off two APSU attack errors.
Belmont held off the Lady Govs, closing out the third set, 26-24, behind a kill from McCoy and block from Martin and Myer.
The third set saw the score tied 15 times.
The fourth set, the Bruins took an early 5-2 lead, but Austin Peay scored three consecutive points, to put the Lady Govs within one. Belmont responded by extending their lead by six points.
Belmont went on a 5-0 run, sparked by McCoy, to close out the set, 25-16 and win the match 3-1.
Myer led the Bruins with 21 kills and added eight digs. Junior setter Hannah Miranda (Covington, La.) dished out 50 assists. Gable led the defense with 18 digs while junior libero Jamie Lundstrom (La Grange, Ill.) added 17 digs.
Nikki Doyle led Austin Peay with a 20-kill performance, her fourth consecutive 20-kill outing, while posting a .347 attack percentage. Jada Stotts added 10 kills, but was held to a .083 attack percentage. The Lady Govs were held to 48 kills but were held to a .186 attack percentage.
NORTHERN KENTUCKY 3, EASTERN KENTUCKY 0
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky fell to Northern Kentucky, 3-0, in a non-conference match on Tuesday. The first two sets were a battle, but NKU won both by two points.
The Norse (20-5) won by scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-13.
Eastern Kentucky (7-14) was led by the play of freshman Rachel Vick. Fourteen of her 16 attacks were kills and she did not make an error for a .875 attack percentage. She also had a block and an ace. Ashley Edmond contributed 10 kills.
Northern got 12 kills from Shelby Buschur and 10 from Kelly Morrissey. The Norse out-hit EKU .329 to .189.
UMKC 3, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (20-25, 19-25, 20-25) decision at UMKC Tuesday evening in Kansas City. It is UMKC's first win against the Redhawks as Southeast now owns a 7-1 record in the all-time series. The Redhawks drop to 16-10 overall and the Roos improve to 15-10.
The Roos hit .252 on the night as Southeast hit .121. UMKC added six service aces to go along with their 47 kills.
Senior Brittney Kalinoski, a native of nearby Overland Park, Kan. led Southeast with 13 kills on the night. She also added 10 digs.
The Kangaroos took the first set from the Redhawks 25-20. UMKC hit .382 in the set with 15 kills. They also added three service aces in the frame.
UMKC jumped out to a 10- 5 lead in the second frame, but the Redhawks used a four-point run to come within one point at 10-9. The Roos followed with a 5-1 run as they worked their way to a win in the frame 25-19.
The Roos pulled ahead late on the Redhawks in the third frame with an 8-4 run taking a 23-17 lead. The Redhawks made a comeback bid late, but the Roos took the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Bekley Idel added 18 digs to pace the Redhawks defense.
SAINT LOUIS 3, EASTERN ILLINOIS 1
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Eastern Illinois volleyball fell to visiting Saint Louis in a four set affair (25-19, 22-25, 25-14, 25-22) on Tuesday (Oct. 23) evening in non-conference action, as the Panthers drop to 7-17 overall.
Senior Alison Berens led EIU on the court with a career-high 16 kills off a .464 middle attack. She also assisted on three blocks.
Freshman Abby Saalfrank followed with 11 put-a-ways and added three blocks of her own, including a solo stuff.
The reigning OVC 'Setter of the Week', Marah Bradbury, dished out 44 assists and hit .556 behind six kills, as the newcomer came just one dig shy of earning an assist-dig double-double with nine ups.
Defensively, sophomore libero Kelsey Brooke finished with 19 digs and junior Stephanie Arnold led the Panthers with four blocks.
Saint Louis (8-16) had four players in double-digit kill figures, led by Lauren Baumet's 18 put-downs, while Megan Gilbert nailed 14 kills behind a .560 attack. Carly Marcum added 12 additional kills, while Cassie Clarke registered an 11-kill, 14-dig double-double while hitting an impressive .688 with zero attack miscues. Defensively, libero Grace Bonoma upped 19 EIU attacks, while Marcum's seven blocks led the SLU net defense.
Meeting for the 20th time on the volleyball, but for the first time since 2003, the Billikens now own a 12-8 all-time DI series lead over the Panthers as the match featured 17 ties and three lead changes. SLU has actually won the last nine meeting between the two regional squads.
Team-wise, SLU led EIU in kills (60-to-52), attack (.304-to-.221), assists (57-to-50), digs (56-to-52), blocks (ten-to-eight), and points (77.0-to-60.0). The big stat of the game, however, was aces as the visitors registered seven unreturnable serves, while the Panthers had zero aces for the first time all season.
