COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men’s basketball team jumped out to a 16-point halftime advantage and never looked back in a 67-45 win over Morehead State in front of 8,724 on Monday night at the Comcast Center.
The Atlantic Coast Conference Terrapins improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Ohio Valley Conference Eagles slip to 1-1 on the campaign. It was the first ever meeting between the two schools in men’s basketball.
Sophomore Nick Faust led a balanced attack for Maryland with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while classmate Alex Len added 11. The Terrapins shot 49 percent (23-of-47) overall, including 61 percent (14-of-23) after intermission.
Maryland enjoyed its largest advantage at 60-37 with 7:33 remaining in the second half, and pushed the lead back to 23 on two more occasions.
Morehead State started 2-of-15 from the floor and never recovered. The Eagles were limited to 28 percent (8-of-29) overall in the first half.
Senior Milton Chavis, the reigning OVC Co-Player of the Week, led Morehead State with 10 points on 5-of-11 from the field. Senior Kahlil Owens posted a team-best seven rebounds, while classmate Jason Holmes rejected a team-high four shots.
Maryland registered advantages of 14-4 in assists and 23-17 in bench points. Both teams committed 20 turnovers on the night, while Morehead State managed a 7-6 edge in steals.
The Eagles were whistled for 26 fouls in the affair, while the Terrapins were called for just 11. The difference was 19 more free-throw attempts in the first half and 21 for the night.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 89, LYON COLLEGE 61
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Tyler Stone scored a game-high 25 points to lead four starters in double figures, as Southeast Missouri (1-1) cruised to a commanding 89-61 victory over Lyon College (2-2) Monday night at the Show Me Center.
NAIA affiliate and American Midwest Conference member Lyon College was no match for Southeast, which earned its second-straight home-opening win.
Southeast jumped out to an 11-3 lead over the first 2:38 before blowing the game open.
Shortly after Marcus Humose knocked down a three-pointer to pull Lyon College to within three (18-15), Stone threw down a dunk to ignite a 17-0 run which covered the next 6:07.
Stone scored six points -- all on dunks -- to send a charge into the home crowd. Nino Johnson also added four points, while Nick Niemczyk and Marland Smith each buried a three-pointer to help lift the Redhawks to a comfortable 35-15 lead with 8:22 remaining.
Southeast coasted to a 46-27 halftime lead, as Stone (17) and Johnson (12) took control with a combined 29 points. The tandem also accounted for six of the Redhawks seven first-half dunks.
The Redhawks picked up right where they left off in the second half and built their largest lead at 87-53 when A.J. Jones knocked down a jumper with 1:50 left to play.
Southeast let its lead dip below 20 points only once in the second half and led by 30 or more on three occasions.
Stone made 10-of-13 field goals and a perfect 5-of-5 free throws en route to his sixth career 20-point effort.
Smith followed with 19 points on 7-of-15 field goals, including 4-of-8 from downtown. Smith also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out four assists and scored 11 of his points in the second half.
Meanwhile, Johnson and Jones contributed double-doubles, the first of their careers.
Johnson scored 14 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, while Jones added 13 points and 10 boards. Johnson finished with two blocks, as well.
As a team, Southeast shot 50 percent (36-of-72) from the field. Defensively, the Redhawks held the Scots to just 27.9 percent (19-of-68) from the floor.
Additionally, Southeast outscored Lyon College, 40-18, inside the paint.
Humose scored 20 points and Jordan Layrock chipped in a double-double 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Lyon College.
Southeast improved to 16-5 all-time in home-openers since moving to the NCAA Division I level. The Redhawks also pushed their record to 5-0 against American Midwest Conference teams under Nutt.
