EASTERN ILLINOIS 88, SAN JOSE STATE 67
CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Panther women’s basketball team picked up an 88-67 win over San Jose State on Monday afternoon in the team’s annual Kid’s Day game at Lantz Arena. The win marks the first victory for first-year head coach Lee Buchanan at the helm of the program.
 
Trailing 5-4 in the opening minutes, EIU scored five unanswered points to take a 10-5 lead at the 13:01 mark in the first half. The Panthers never trailed again and built an 11-point advantage 34-23 with 4:48 on the clock before taking a 40-32 lead into the half.
 
The Panthers heated up from the floor in the second stanza, hitting 51.4 percent of their shots (19-for-37) and leading by double figures for the final 12:37 of the game. EIU led by as much as 24 points (88-64) with 36 seconds remaining in regulation.
 
Jordyne Crunk led a group of five Panthers who scored in double figures with 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Mariah King added 14 points while Kelsey Wyss chipped in 13 points. Ta’Kenya Nixon also had 12 points and Katlyn Payne scored 11 points, respectively. EIU had 21 assists on the day, led by Nixon who had nine assists and Wyss who dished out five assists. 
 
Defensively, the Panthers outrebounded the Spartans by 13 (49-36) led by Sydney Mitchell who grabbed eight rebounds. A trio of players in King, Payne and Sabina Oroszova each had seven rebounds.
 
EIU also forced 23 Spartan turnovers, converting the miscues into 26 points. Wyss posted a game-high five steals as EIU recorded 11 steals on the day.
 
Ta’Rea Cunnigan led San Jose State with 21 points and seven rebounds. Chereese Thomas added 13 points in the loss. The Spartans connected on 37.3 percent of their shots (22-for-59) on the day.
 
The Panthers return to action at the Marriott Classic in Dayton, Ohio on Nov. 24-25. EIU faces Buffalo on Saturday at 6 p.m. before playing the host Flyers at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
 
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 52, ARKANSAS STATE 51
JONESBORO, Ark. - Jordan Hunter's layup with 4.2 seconds left capped a dramatic, 52-51, come-from-behind victory for the Southeast Missouri women's basketball team at Arkansas State on Monday night.
 
The Redhawks (2-2) trailed the Red Wolves (0-4) by as many as 16 points in the first half before taking its first lead of the game on Hunter's layup.
 
ASU jumped out to a 7-2 advantage, scoring five straight points on a Jane Morrill three and a Quinisha McDowell layup. With the score 11-6 in favor of the Red Wolves, Morrill hit a three-pointer and a mid-range jumper to up the lead to 16-6 with 11:45 left in the opening frame.
 
That gap eventually grew to 14 points as part of the Red Wolves' 13-4 run, making it 24-10 with under six minutes left in the half. ASU's lead was as large as 28-12 and it held Southeast to 19.2 percent shooting while making 45.5 percent of its shots in the first half to take a 30-16 lead into halftime.
 
Southeast cut the deficit to nine points (40-31) on a Patricia Mack jumper with 8:47 left on the clock. However, Morrill followed with an and-one, making a hook shot and hitting the ensuing free throw to extend the lead back to 12 points.
 
Trailing 45-33, Kara Wright made Southeast's first three-pointer of the game and Allyson Bradshaw banked home a jumper to make it 45-38 at the 6:40 mark of the second half. Brittany Harriel extended the run to 12-0 with seven-straight points. The senior forward drained a three-pointer, then hit a layup and a jumper on the next two possessions to forge a 45-45 tie, the game's first since the score was 2-2.
 
ASU's Ashley Olvera ended the run by hitting a three-point shot and then making a free throw , giving the Red Wolves a 49-45 lead with 3:01 to play.
 
A pair of Courtney Shiffer free throws cut the gap to 49-47, but Morrill countered with a basket on an Olvera assist. With 58 seconds left, Mack hit a three-pointer from the corner to make it 51-50.
 
Southeast got a critical stop and called timeout to draw up a play with 11 seconds left. With the clock winding down, Hunter got to the basket down the baseline and put the Redhawks on top 52-51 on a layup with 4.2 seconds left. That lead was Southeast's first lead of the game.
 
After using its foul to trim the clock to 0.4 seconds, Quinishia McDowell's desperation three-pointer fell short and Southeast secured its first non-conference road win since Nov. 17, 2007 at Central Arkansas.
 
Patricia Mack finished with a career-high 17 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth career double-double while Brittany Harriel (13 points) also finished in double figures.
 
Southeast shot 40 percent from the field and held ASU to 35.3 percent shooting, including 8-of-29 (27.6 percent) in the second half. The Red Wolves held a 34-33 advantage in rebounding. Southeast finished with 16 turnovers compared to ASU's 13 miscues.
 
Southeast returns to the court on Friday when they travel to Houston as part of the David Jones classic. Opening tip is at 5:30 p.m.
 
SIUE 68, WESTERN ILLINOIS 58
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.  - SIUE shot 65 percent in the first half Monday and went on to a 68-58 triumph over Western Illinois in women's college basketball action at the Vadalabene Center.
 
SIUE evened its season record to 2-2 with three players in double figures. Jazmin Hill scored 16 followed by 15 from Raven Berry and 14 from CoCo Moore.
 
Playing their third game in five days, the Cougars came out anything but sluggish against the Leathernecks, now 1-3.
 
Buscher got plenty of help from the Cougar bench which outscored WIU's bench 39-19.
 
Moore's 14 points was a career high. The Cougar guard was everywhere on the court with five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
 
SIUE and Western Illinois went back and forth early in the contest. Western Illinois forward Michelle Maher kept the Leathernecks neck and neck with the Cougars with a 22-point effort. She hit a game-high five three-pointers.
 
The Cougars closed out the first half with a 21-5 run over the final 8:44 and took a 39-24 lead into the locker room.
 
SIUE, which shot 57.1 percent from the field for the game, allowed the lead to go to single digits just once in the second half.
 
Next up for the Cougars is the SMU Hoops for the Cure Classic in Dallas, Texas. SIUE plays SMU Friday in a 5 p.m. contest. The Cougars then take on either Montana State or Clemson Saturday.

SAMFORD 48, JACKSONVILLE STATE 43
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -
Samford overcame an eight-point deficit in the final six minutes of the game to squeak past Jacksonville State, 48-45, on Monday night at Pete Mathews Coliseum in the home debut for the JSU women's squad.

The Bulldogs (1-1) erased the JSU (0-4) lead with an 8-0 scoring run over a two-minute span to knot the game at 43-43 at the 4:26 mark.  After Jax State took its final lead and scored its final bucket on a basket from Marikate Gardler with 1:05 left in the contest, SU's Shelby Campbell drained one of her four three-pointers with 44 second left to give SU the lead and game-winning basket.  Campbell also hit the front end of a one-and-one opportunity to give the Bulldogs a three-point lead with nine seconds left on the clock.  The Gamecocks last attempt to extend the game was thwarted by SU with a JSU turnover.  Campbell led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting.  Jazmine Martin scored all nine of her points in the first half.

Turnovers plagued Jax State down the stretch with five turnovers in critical trips down the floor.  The Gamecocks had 14 of their 23 turnovers in the second half.  JSU did force 18 SU miscues and credited with a season-best 11 steals in the contest.

JSU had its best first half production with a 10-for-23 shooting effort in the first half, which led to a 25-19 halftime lead. The Gamecocks hit 40 percent from the field, but knocked down eight baskets in the final 20 minutes.  Defensively, JSU's zone defense hampered the Bulldogs' offense all night as they hit just 34 percent from the field.  SU drained eight of its 18 total shots from behind the three-point arc.  For the fourth consecutive game, JSU has out-rebounded its opposition. JSU finished one better then SU on the boards, 32-31.

Sophomore Miranda Cantrell came off the bench to lead the JSU offense with 12 points, which matched her career high in points.  The College Park, Ga.-native pulled down six rebounds in 24 minutes of action.  Dashauna Truss registered eight points and six rebounds.  The Stetson transfer was also credited with four assists and four steals.  Freshman Peyton Hisel continues to contribute from the post spot with another seven point outing.  It was her third time this season she has turned in seven points. The Lexington, Ky.-native hit one of the two JSU three pointers in the first half.

Freshman Destany McLin and sophomore Brian Morrow pitched in six points, while Gardler added four points.  Freshman Destiny James had two points in a valuable 23 minutes off the bench.

After a break for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Gamecocks continue their homestand against Jacksonville University on Sunday, Nov. 25.  Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
