DAYTON 77, MURRAY STATE 68
DAYTON, Ohio - The Murray State Racers saw their school-record road winning streak end at 16 Saturday with a 77-69 loss at the University of Dayton at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio.
The loss dropped the Racers to 10-2 and snapped one of the more remarkable runs in program history. MSU lost in a true road game for the first time since the final game of the 2010-11 season at Missouri State on March 15, 2011 in the National Invitation Tournament. The span between losses was an amazing 647 days.
Isaiah Canaan led the way for MSU with 20 points, while Ed Daniel added 17 points and his seventh double-double with 13 rebounds.
Leading 41-36 at the half, MSU scrapped and held off the home team until the final 4:30 when UD scored a quick 10-0 run in less than a minute to take a 67-60 lead with 3:40 left. The Racers’ last lead was on Dexter Fields’ fourth three-pointer of the game at 60-59 with 4:32 remaining, but the Flyers ended the game on an 18-8 run to move their record to 9-3.
The first half featured six ties and 10 lead changes. MSU had dunks on their first three possessions and led 6-2. UD had a 14-10 lead at the 13:00 mark. Canaan hit nine straight free throws in the opening half and helped the Racers to a 38-34 lead on a long three at the 2:23 mark. Another three from Fields seconds later and MSU had their largest lead of 41-34 and MSU eventually led the Flyers 41-36 at the half.
MSU was 22-of-55 from the field for 40 percent, while the Flyers managed 45 percent on 25-of-56 shots. From the three-point line MSU was 9-of-27 for 33 percent, with the Flyers coming in at 47 percent on 9-of-19 shots.
The Racers won the rebound battle 35-34 with Stacy Wilson adding seven to Daniel’s 13.
#24 OKLAHOMA STATE 78, TENNESSEE TECH 42
STILLWATER, Okla. - It's easy to see why Oklahoma State named their mascot Pistol Pete, as the No. 24 ranked Cowboys used hot shooting from both the field and 3-point line to down the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 78-42 Saturday afternoon.
The Cowboys proved why they rank among the nation's top 25 teams, out-performing the Golden Eagles in most aspects of the game. OSU led in rebounds, field goal percentage, 3-point field goal percentage, free throw percentage, assists, steals, blocks, and field goals attempted.
Tech could not match the 11-for-27 3-point performance put up by the Cowboys, shooting just under 27 percent from behind the arc in the contest. OSU used a rounded attack against the Golden Eagles with five players scoring in double digits.
Freshman guard Phil Forte led the OSU attack, scoring 22 points off the bench, including six 3-pointers. Marcus Smart, a freshman guard who is projected as a lottery pick in the upcoming 2013 NBA Draft, scored 11 points while fellow NBA Draft hopeful Markel Brown, a junior guard, chipped in 11 points as well.
Senior guard Jud Dillard led the Tech scoring effort for the third consecutive game, dropping 18 points on the Cowboys on 6-of-11 shooting from the field. He also added six rebounds during the contest.
Dennis Ogbe, a junior forward from Munich, Germany led the rebounding effort for the Golden Eagles, coming down with eight in nearly 30 minutes of play. A transfer from SMU, junior guard Jeremiah Samarrippas totaled 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers in the second half.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 66, UMKC 65
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Tyler Stone scored a game-high 28 points and knocked down the game-winning free throws with 28 seconds left to help Southeast Missouri (8-6) escape with a 66-65 win over Kansas City (4-8) Saturday afternoon at the Swinney Rec Center.
Kirk Korver, the younger brother of Atlanta Hawks guard Kyle Korver, made a three-pointer from the right corner to give UMKC a 65-64 edge with 42 seconds left to play.
Stone was later fouled by Thomas Staton on the Redhawks final possession. Stone calmly tossed in two free throws to regain the lead for Southeast.
The Redhawks needed a stop and received one in a big way when Nino Johnson blocked Estan Tyler's three-pointer from the top of the key with eight seconds on the clock. The ball landed in the hands of Staton, who threw up a desperation shot which fell short of the rim at the buzzer.
Stone, who shot just 62 percent from the free throw line a year ago, has improved immensely in that area this season. His career-best and perfect 8-of-8 showing against the Kangaroos boosted his free throw percentage to .867, as he has missed only six times through 14 games.
Southeast led the entire game until Fred Chatmon's layup gave UMKC its first lead at 55-53 with 7:36 left to play.
Then, things suddenly got interesting.
Shortly after Lucas Nutt was fouled and completed a three-point play, Tyler buried a pair of free throws to regain a 57-56 advantage at the 4:37 mark.
Southeast answered by strininging together six unanswered points when Nutt made a jumper and Stone added two free throws and a layup to widen the Redhawks lead to 62-57 with 3:09 remaining.
A quick three-pointer by Nate Rogers cut the lead to two and UMKC tied the game at 62-62 on Nelson Kirksey's field goal with 1:38 on the clock.
Moments later, Corey Wilford banked in a running shot high off the backboard to grab Southeast a 64-62 lead, and Korver splashed in his three 24 seconds after that.
Wilford took another shot on the Redhawks next possession, but this time missed. Stone came away with the offensive rebound and was fouled before going to the line to sink the game-winning free throws.
Southeast held an opponent under 25 points in the first half for the fourth time this season. The Redhawks never trailed in the game's opening 20 minutes, as UMKC shot just 30 percent (9-of-30) from the field.
Stone scored 12 of his points, including eight over a span of 7:42 to help grab Southeast a 32-24 halftime lead.
The Redhawks closed out the first half with a 9-3 run in the last 2:34 to build their 10th lead at the half this year.
Stone shot 10-of-17 from the field, finished with a team-high nine rebounds and had two blocks en route to his fourth 20-plus point effor this season. He scored double figures for the 13th-consecutive game and poured in 20 or more in two of his last three starts.
Wilford followed with 15 points, six rebounds and a team-high six assists. He also scored six-straight points to get Southeast a six-point lead with 9:14 left in the second half.
Marland Smith and Nutt each hit milestones in assists against the Kangaroos. Smith went over 200 career assists (201), while Nutt surpassed 300 (304).
Southeast, which turned the ball over only seven times for the second-straight game, led by as many as 11 points before pulling out the win.
Rogers led all UMKC scorers with 14 points. Chatmon followed with a double-double 11 points and 13 rebounds, and Staton chipped in 13 points.
The Kangaroos outscored the Redhawks, 30-9, from three-point range. UMKC made 10-of-27 threes.
Southeast, which has won two in a row, secured its first non-conference winning record since 2003-04 (7-4).
ILLINOIS STATE 83, AUSTIN PEAY 57
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State broke open a tie game with a half-ending 14-2 run as the Governors fell, 83-57, Saturday afternoon in Redbird Arena.
Turnovers again were a Govs problem as they committed 25, six coming in the final 6:35 of the first half as ISU broke open a 26-26 game.
Anthony Campbell tallied his second 20-point game of the week, going for 20 on 7-of-13 shooting. He was APSU's only double-figure scorer.
DRAKE 74, EASTERN ILLINOIS 56
DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake’s outside shooting from 3-point range proved to be too much for Eastern Illinois as the Panthers dropped a 74-56 road contest to the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon in the Knapp Center.
EIU fell to 3-10 overall and opens Ohio Valley Conference play next Saturday at Tennessee State. Drake improved to 6-5.
Sherman Blanford helped the Panthers in the first half scoring 11 of the Panthers first 14 points. Drake jumped out to a 19-11 lead following a pair of free throws by Richard Carter with 13:14 to play.
Blanford converted a three point play at the 12:53 mark which sparked an EIU run capped by Austin Akers 3-pointer with 9:13 left in the half that gave EIU a 22-21 lead. Blanford would pick up his second foul of the half and EIU would fail to score a basket the remainder of the first half.
Alex Austin had a pair of free throws with 5:45 left in the first half to give EIU a lead. Morris Woods sank free throw at 4:03 that put EIU up 26-24. Drake closed the half on a 9-0 run to lead 33-24 at the half. Woods had ten points off the bench for EIU.
Micah Mason scored the first five points of the second half for the Bulldogs as he sank 5-of-6 shots from 3-point range with four of them coming in the second half. Mason finished with a game high 19 points.
As a team Drake shot 59 percent from 3-point range hitting 13-of-22 including 8-of-14 in the second half. Seth VanDeest led Drake in the first half and finished with 10 points as four Bulldogs scored in double figures. Ben Simons had 14 and Chris Hines 11.
Blanford led EIU with 18 points hitting 8-of-10 from the floor to go along with 7 rebounds. EIU won the battle on the boards with a 25-19 advantage. 11 of those 25 rebounds were on the offensive glass. EIU shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half and 45 percent for the game.
