2012 OVC Baseball Championship - Day 1 5/23/2012 1:00:00 PM Championship Central | Follow Us on Twitter | FacebookThe 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championship got underway on Wednesday with two games.In the first game of the day, No. 4 seed Eastern Illinois topped No. 5 Morehead State 2-1, scoring in the bottom of the ninth inning on a walk-off hit by Ryan Dineen.In the nightcap No. 6 seed Southeast Missouri bested No. 3 Jacksonville State 4-1.This season marks the 34th time the event has been held but the third year in a row it has been held at Pringles Park in Jackson, Tenn. Pringles Park is home of the Jackson Generals, the AA-affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. The long ball was the 38th of Thoma's career, moving him to without one home run of the EIU career record.The game remained 1-0 until the ninth when Morehead State scored an unearned run on a dropped fly ball by EIU second baseman Nathan Sopena. The drop allowed pinch runner Bud Morton to score from second base.In the bottom of the inning the Panthers nearly scored the game-winning run but MSU's Duran Elmore threw out David Ciaglia, who walked to start the frame, with a perfect strike to home. After a walk to lead-off batter Caleb Howell, Dineen drove a ball over the right-fielder's head, plating the winning run.Hoekstra needed just 105 pitches to improve to 5-3 on the season. He struck out four and walked two.Morehead State starter Aaron Goe scattered seven hits and one run over eight innings. Relief pitcher Morgan Cirbo (5-3) picked up the loss.Morehead State will play Jacksonville State in an elimination game at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. Eastern Illinois will play No. 2 Eastern Kentucky at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.#6 SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 4, #3 JACKSONVILLE STATE 1JACKSON, Tenn. - Trailing by a run No. 6 seed Southeast Missouri scored three times in the sixth inning to grab a lead and go on to a 4-1 victory over No. 3 seed Jacksonville State in the final game of Day One of the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championship at Pringles Park.It marked the first time since the 2008 season that Southeast Missouri had notched a victory in its opening game of the OVC Tournament, while it marked the first time that Jacksonville State had lost its opening round game since joining the league in 2004.The Redhawks will play No. 1 seed Austin Peay at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday while the Gamecocks will play No. 4 seed Morehead State in an elimination game at 11:00 a.m.JSU (26-29) got on the board thanks to a Scott Underwood RBI single in the fifth inning.But a frame later the Redhawks (22-34) did all the damage they would need, scoring three runs (two of which were unearned) to surge ahead 3-1. The key play in the inning was a fielding error in center field that plated two Redhawk runs.Jacksonville State threatened in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs before freshman Dalton Hewitt made a diving catch to record the third out of the inning in right field. Hewitt, who had not seen much action in the outfield this season, had entered the game as a pinch runner in the sixth inning.Trenton Moses extended his streak of reaching base safely to 76 games with a double in the top of the ninth inning.In relief of starter Will Spitzfaden (who allowed one run over four innings), Christian Hull picked up the victory, allowing just two hits over the final five innings. Hull improved to 4-7 on the season.JSU's Aaron Elias (took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) in 5.2 innings.
