EAST TENNESSEE 2, TENNESSEE TECH 0
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Tech soccer team dropped its regular season opening match against East Tennessee State Friday afternoon 2-0, despite matching the Lady Bucs with 13 shots throughout the match.
ETSU midfielder Sarah Zadrazil scored a clutch goal with two seconds left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Lady Bucs added to their lead in the 68th minute when forward Kristi Davis picked up a touch pass from Zadrazil and sent it flailing into the net.
TTU senior midfielder Kerri Reid nearly evened the score in the 55th before her shot caught the crossbar. Four minutes later, senior forward Andrea Meloff looked sure to score after beating ETSU goalkeeper Sierra Campbell, but defender Hannah Short pulled off an incredible save by heading the ball away from the goal.
Tech played a strong first half and looked poised to tie things up in the second half of the match. The ETSU defense, however, had other thoughts in mind. The Lady Bucs' defense knocked the ball out of the zone quickly and often, making it tough for the Golden Eagles to squeeze in some shots-on-goal.
With the win, ETSU improved to 1-0 on the season while Tech fell to 0-1.
Despite the loss, Brizard focused on the future and kept the team focused on its next opponent.
The Golden Eagles will travel to Chattanooga on Sunday with the match against the Mocs slated for a 12 p.m. CT start. The match-up against the Mocs will mark the start of a three-game road-trip for the Tech soccer team.
AKRON 3, MOREHEAD STATE 2
AKRON, Ohio -The Morehead State soccer team suffered a 3-2 setback to Akron on Friday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Eagles are now 0-1 on the season, while the Zips start 1-0.
Morehead State sophomore defender Macy Cobb and freshman forward Kimberly Golden each tallied their first goals of the season in the contest.
The Zips got the scoring started 17 minutes into the match when they capitalized on a through ball into the right side of the box. Freshman forward Megan Waskowski brought the ball inside the six-yard box and beat freshman goalkeeper Hannah Seeman near post.
It didn’t take the Eagles long to respond, and on their fifth corner kick of the match, sophomore midfielder Elizabeth McSparin played a ball into the six that found the head of Cobb.
Akron struck next, in the 29th minute, after a miscue in the back left Seeman with a pair of Zips at the top if the box. Freshman midfielder Lexa Green came out of the collision with the ball and dribbled her way into the Eagle net.
The final goal of the first half also came from the Zips, with just over two minutes to play, off another through ball to sophomore defender Hailey Kirkwood. The goal gave Akron the 3-1 lead heading into the break.
It was the Eagles, though, who got the second half started. Sophomore midfielder Holly Tilley found McSparin on the back post, but the goal was disallowed due to a hand ball. Tilley wouldn’t let that stop her as she played another ball into the box just minutes later and found Golden, who connected to bring the Eagles within a goal again.
EASTERN KENTUCKY 2, UNC ASHEVILLE 1
RICHMOND, Ky. -Junior Lauren Fant scored the decisive goal off a corner kick from sophomore Emily D’Italia with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half as the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team defeated visiting UNC Asheville, 2-1, on Friday afternoon in the Colonels’ 2012 opener at EKU Soccer Field.
EKU (1-0-0) routed Asheville (0-1-0), 4-0, on the road last year. This year, however, the win did not come so easy. After junior Nikki Donnelly received a pass from fellow junior Kristan Paynter and put the Colonels up early with a goal just eight minutes into the game, the Bulldogs responded when Kaitlyn Eckert found the back of the net in the 27th minute to tie the game, 1-1.
It was not until the 40th minute that EKU retook the lead for good. That goal came when D’Italia sailed a beautiful corner kick in front of the net that Fant punched past Asheville goalkeeper Heather Muller with her head to make the score, 2-1.
The goal proved to be Fant’s first-career game winner, as the EKU defense, which surrendered 11 shots to Asheville in the first half, stifled the Bulldogs to just three shots in the second half to grind out the Colonels’ first season-opening win since 2006.
Donnelly, who moved within three goals of the all-time EKU record with her score in the first half, noted that winning the season opener should lift EKU’s confidence going forward.
EKU freshman goalkeeper Erika Wolfer played all 90 minutes and made five saves to earn the win in her first career start.
EKU and Asheville both attempted 14 shots apiece in the game, but EKU held the edge with three corner kicks, one of which made the difference.
VANDERBILT 2, UT MARTIN 0
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team traded blows with visiting Vanderbilt under the lights tonight at Skyhawk Field, but the Commodores came up with a pair of goals in a span of 6:17 late in the second half to come away with a 2-0 win.
The Skyhawks outshot Vanderbilt for a majority of the match until the Commodores’ first goal was scored. A total of nine UT Martin players attempted at least one shot this evening, led by two shots apiece by Dominika Conc, Alyssa Curtis, Ashley Reveiz and Midori Sera. The Skyhawks put three of their 13 attempts on goal but couldn’t convert their chances.
Sophomore Mariah Klenke tallied a career-best 11 saves tonight, logging all 90 minutes in goal. She made eight straight saves to begin the match before the Commodore offense broke through in the 75th and 82nd minutes.
Conc got the offense going, attempting the first shot of the match at the 3:17 mark. Klenke then made four saves in a span of 25:13.
UT Martin had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the 35th minute, but Vanderbilt goalkeeper Alexa Levick kept the match scoreless. After Abi Sanvee drew a foul in the box, Hannah McGowen took a penalty kick at the 34:29 mark but Levick made a full-extension diving save to her right to deflect the shot past the end line.
The Skyhawks then unleashed a barrage of shots, firing the last five shots of the first half. At the break, UT Martin held a 10-5 advantage in the shots category.
Klenke made back-to-back saves in a span of 2:54 to open the second half, followed by another close call by the Skyhawk offense. Off a corner kick at the 55:54 mark, Hannah McGowen delivered a picture-perfect pass to a streaking Jaclyn Heckle for a header. Just as the ball appeared to sneak in the goal, Levick emerged to block the shot at the last second.
Melisa Erturk created some space at the 67:32 mark and fired an accurate shot but once again Levick snared the save.
Klenke stopped her eighth straight shot at the 73:38 mark but under 90 seconds later the Commodores went on top 1-0 off a goal by Ashley Oswald. Two more saves were added to Klenke’s total before Lina Granados scored off a deflected save at the 81:14 mark to make the score 2-0 in Vanderbilt’s favor.
UT Martin had its last chance to get on the scoreboard in the 86th minute, but Curtis’ lofted attempt from 25 yards out grazed the crossbar.
INDIANA STATE 2, SIUE 0
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - A slow start hurt SIUE women's soccer in a 2-0 season-opening loss at Indiana State Friday night.
Shelby Troyer put the Sycamores up 1-0 in the 25th minute, when she hit a shot past goalkeeper Courtney Vonder Haar from 30 yards out. Marissa Windisch sealed the Cougars' fate with a free kick goal in the 88th minute. Freshman Jennifer Pelley allowed the second goal. Vonder Haar and Pelley split time between the pipes for SIUE. Vonder Haar made four saves in the first half. Pelley stopped two shots in the second half.
SIUE outshot Indiana State 13-12 in the match. Sycamore goalie Erin Martin made four saves for Indiana State.
IOWA 5, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Panther women's soccer team fell at Iowa, 5-0, on Friday night in the squad's season opener. EIU drops to 0-1 on the year.
The Hawkeyes scored their first goal in the fifth minute to take an early lead they would never relinquish. Cloe Lacasse scored the first of her two goals in the 34th minute to put Iowa up 2-0 heading into the half. Iowa eventually added three goals, two on penalty kicks, only 12 minutes into the second stanza to put the match out of reach.
EIU was outshot by 18 (22-4) in the match and did not record a shot on goal to the Hawkeyes 13 shots on goal. The Panthers committed nine more fouls (16-7) in the contest and took four fewer corner kicks (4-0).
Kristin Germann, Hannah Miller, Jessie Morgan and Meagan Radloff each had one shot for the Panthers. Lacasse led the Hawkeyes with two goals, an assist and seven shots (five on goal).
Jessica Taldone (0-1) took the loss in goal, allowing five goals and making eight saves in 90 minutes of action. Hannah Clark (1-0) posted the win between the pipes for Iowa, not surrendering a goal in 54 minutes.
ILLINOIS STATE 2, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 1
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast rallied from a halftime deficit, but Rachel Tejada's second goal in the 63rd minute sent the Redhawks to a 2-1 season-opening loss to Illinois State on Friday night.
The season-opening setback is only Southeast's (0-1) second in its last 12 season openers.
Friday night's contest opened up with a defensive struggle in the first half. The teams combined for only seven shots in the first 45 minutes, though the few shots attempted were high quality. ISU's (1-0) Aimee Wronski drilled a shot off the goal post in the 15th minute and six minutes later a cross by Torey Byrd found Jacey Boyko for a header that was flipped just wide of the net to keep the contest scoreless.
The Redbirds got on the board in the 23rd minute when Kristin Cooley's free kick got past the Redhawks' back line and drew Ashton Aubuchon out for a race to the ball with Tejada, the nation's fourth leading scorer a year ago. Tejada got to the spot first and tapped the ball past Aubuchon for the tally to put ISU up 1-0 at halftime, despite taking only three shots.
The second half opened up with Southeast playing catch up. The Redhawks took four of the first five shots in the frame, several of which were quality chances. In the 52nd minute, Erin Shulman slipped a ball into the corner in the 18-yard box, giving Courtney Luehmann a slight opening towards a vacated goal, but the sharp angle shot just grazed off the near post.
Southeast was not to be denied. In the 54th minute Shulman played a long ball through the Redbird defense to spring freshman Ashley Geist free. In similar fashion to ISU's first goal, Redbird keeper Aryn Newsom came out of the net to try to play the ball away, but Geist was quicker to the ball and sent a long shot sailing into a wide open net from about 30 yards, evening the score at 1-1.
The contest became more defensive over the next few minutes, with each team only attempting one shot over the next nine minutes. The next bounce went to Illinois State in the 63rd minute as a Kyla Cross cross into the box took a high bounce behind every Redhawk, finding Tejada with a wide open look for her second tally of the night.
The Redhawks pressed over the next 15 minutes and set up a great chance at the equalizer with under 17 minutes left. A through ball found Kasey Crowden streaking down the left sideline and her cross met found Geist for a header, but Newsom made a strong diving save to preserve the lead. After two more Southeast shots shortly after that chance, ISU grinded out the final 13 minutes without allowing another shot.
The Redhawks outshot the Redbirds by a 13-10 margin, including a 9-7 advantage in the second half. Southeast also attempted five corner kicks to ISU's four.
Ashton Aubuchon played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 2, JACKSONVILLE STATE 0
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Middle Tennessee State scored two early goals to spoil Jacksonville State's 2012 season debut, 2-0, on the soccer pitch at the JSU Soccer Complex on Friday evening.
The match ushered in the Jax State athletic calendar for the 2012-12 season.
MTSU's Paige Goeglein put the Blue Raiders on the scoreboard in the ninth minute with the first of two goals in a five-minute span. After MTSU staved off an early JSU scoring opportunity, it took advantage of a Gamecock miscue and turned it into the first goal of the season for Goeglein. MTSU added its second goal of he night in the 14th minute after Amalie Anderal slipped a ball into the net after an assist by Emily Jorgenson. MTSU turned in seven of its 13 total shots in the match's first 45 minutes.
The Gamecocks picked up the tempo in the second half with four scoring chances, while limiting the Blue Raiders' attack. MTSU's keeper, Kelsey Brouwer, was tested in the second half with two of her three saves in the final period. Jax State senior Katelyn Geddings, who led the Ohio Valley Conference last year in saves, finished with eight stops.
Carlson put together a veteran line up for the season opener, but saw quality minutes from many newcomers on the squad. A pair of freshmen made their JSU debuts on Friday as Sydney Keller and Katt Dowd were inserted into the starting line up. Keller, a highly-touted player from Huntsville, Ala., played the entire match in her first action on the collegiate level. Brianna Boutzivious, who was one of a few players Carlson mentioned as a spark to the club in the second half, was credited with her first shot attempt.
Leading the offensive charge for JSU was sophomore Courtney Hurt and senior Nathalee Lariviere. The duo combined for four of the squad's seven shots on the evening.
MTSU's Goeglein led all players with three shot attempts.
Jax State returns to action on Sunday as it travels to Atlanta, Ga. to face Georgia State. Match time is set for 1 p.m. CST. The Panthers dropped a 1-0 decision to Auburn on Friday night. The GSU contest is the first of five matches away from the JSU Soccer Complex for the Gamecocks.
ARKANSAS 2, AUSTIN PEAY 1
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - A late goal deprived Austin Peay State University's women's soccer team of its first-ever decision against Arkansas, Friday night. The Lady Govs fell to the Razorbacks 2-1 in the 2012 regular-season opener.
Arkansas (1-0-0) assaulted the net in the early going. The Razorbacks attempted 11 shots, putting eight on net in the opening 45 minutes.
The Lady Govs (0-1-0) had fewer chances in the first half, but were able to find holes in the Arkansas defense. In the 32nd minute, senior Sara Kluttz unleashed a shot that beat Arkansas net minder Kelly Roliard but hit the post and bounced away, keeping the Lady Govs off the board.
The Razorbacks would break the scoreless tie in the 36th minute. Ashleigh Ellenwood got behind the Lady Govs backline on a breakaway and beat Shoaff low and to the right to give Arkansas a 1-0 lead late in the first half. That would be the only blemish in a busy first half for Shoaff, who made seven saves in the opening period.
The Lady Govs would get the equalizer late in the first half. Junior Andy Quiceno was dragged down in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for Austin Peay. Junior Morgan Zigelsky put the kick away for the Lady Govs, tying the match up going into the break.
Junior Joceline Quiceno brought the Govs offense to life early in the second half, rocketing a shot off the post within the first 30 seconds of the second period. Zigelsky also put a shot on net in the 69th minute.
The Razorbacks kept the pressure up on the Lady Govs defense, and finally broke through in the 82nd minute. A poor clear attempt by Austin Peay allowed Phyllis George to put a shot past Shoaff for the game-winner.
Shoaff faced 20 shots, including 12 on goal, and made 10 saves in the season opener. Seven Razorbacks took more than one shot, with Lindsey Mayo attempting four and putting two on net.
The Lady Govs offense took nine shots, but only two were on net. Joceline Quiceno attempted three shots. Zigelsky was the only Lady Gov to put a shot on goal.
Austin Peay resumes the season-opening Arkansas road trip at 1 p.m., Sunday, in Little Rock against Sun Belt foe UALR.
