AUSTIN PEAY 3, UALR 1
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Austin Peay State University's women's soccer team picked up its first win of 2012, Sunday, on the road against UALR. The Lady Govs scored three unanswered goals to knock off the Trojans 3-1.
The host Trojans (0-2-0) jumped out to an early lead in the first half. Austin Peay keeper Haylee Shoaff saved an Alyson Rohane shot, but Ariel Galletti collected the rebound and put it in the back of the net for the Trojans first goal in 2012.
The Lady Govs answered in the 24th minute on an unassisted goal from sophomore Taylor Van Wagner. The goal was the first in Van Wagner's Lady Govs career. The goal came on a collected rebound from an Austin Peay corner kick.
Austin Peay surged ahead in the second half thanks to Andy Quiceno. She broke away from the defense and beat the keeper to the bottom left for a goal less than two minutes into the period that put the Lady Govs ahead for the first time in 2012.

JACKSONVILLE STATE 2, GEORGIA STATE 1
ATLANTA, Ga. - In its first road test of the 2012 season, the Jacksonville State soccer team turned in a 2-1 win over Georgia State on Sunday as the Gamecocks posted a the game-winning goal in the final minutes of the contest.
JSU sophomore Courtney Hurt took advantage of a GSU penalty inside the penalty box in the 82nd minute. Hurt, from Huntsville, Ala., broke the 1-all deadlock with the game-winner. The goal was her first of the season and second of her career.
Jax State moved to 1-1 on the season after dropping the season opener to Middle Tennessee State last Friday. The win marked the first in 15 previous meetings against the Panthers. GSU had won 12 of those matches with three draws. The victory snapped a two-match losing skid to the Panthers, who fell to 0-2 on the season.
The Gamecocks took the early 1-0 lead after freshman Brianna Boutziouvis connected on her first collegiate goal in the 18th minute. The Ottawa, Ontario, Canada-native earned her first career start and made the most of it with the first goal of the match. She took one touch from senior Katie Manns from about 45 yards out to put it past GSU keeper Rebecca Ingram. The assist from Manns was her third of her career.
The Panthers scored the equalizing goal in the 37th minute as Whitney Raven squeezed the ball into the net from the left. The goal sent both teams into the halftime intermission at 1-1.
Carlson mentioned the quality of play from freshman Katt Dowd in the JSU line of defense, while raving about Boutziouvis early contributions to the program in just two matches played on the collegiate level.
JSU was limited to six total shots, but connected two of those to preserve the win. Hurt paced the Gamecocks with two scoring chances. The Panthers were credited with 17 shot attempts, but could not overcome the late deficit. Jax State senior goalkeeper Katelyn Geddings made nine saves in the match. After not having a corner kick against MTSU, JSU finished the contest with seven, which pressured the GSU defense.
BELMONT 2, TOLEDO 1
TOLEDO, Ohio - In their first contest of the 2012 season, the Belmont women's soccer team (1-0) came from behind to defeat 2011 NCAA Tournament participant Toledo (0-2), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon. It was the first meeting between the programs and marked the first win for any Belmont team as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference.
The Rockets opened the contest aggressively and managed to score in the first five minutes of the contest but the Bruins were able to quickly recover and settle. Junior Nicole Berner (Randolph, N.J.) successfully defended the BU net before newcomer Katie Proud (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored the neutralizer in the 21st minute with an assist from senior Megan Rock (Madison, Miss.). The Bruins were able to keep fresh legs on the field for the remainder of the half to aid in their battle for control as the teams headed into halftime locked in a 1-1 stalemate.
After the break, Toledo returned to its aggressive ways of the first stanza. However, the Bruins were able to dig in their defensive heels and hold off the attacks. Finally, senior Spencer Laufer (Houston, Texas) was able to find the back of the net in the 70th minute for the gamewinner unassisted.
The teams traded shots for the remainder of regulation but BU was able to hold on for the 2-1 victory over the Rockets.
Toledo held the advantage in shots, 15-4, and corner kicks, 6-1.
Laufer, junior Kim Elmore (Salem, Va.), and sophomore Rachel Schmidt (Dallas, Texas) each recorded shots during the contest.

TENNESSEE TECH 2, CHATTANOOGA 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Tennessee Tech's junior forward Ellie Iaciofano had never experienced a birthday quite like Sunday's as she recorded a goal and an assist in leading the Golden Eagles to their first win of the season over UT-Chattanooga.
Just two days after ETSU exacted revenge on Tech from a 2011 win over the Lady Bucs, the Golden Eagles flipped the table on Chattanooga following last season's 2-1 loss to the Mocs.
Senior forward Andrea Meloff kicked things off early, scoring in the third minute of the game off an Iaciofano cross. Amanda Koch also added an assist on the goal. Iaciofano added to the lead in the 55th minute, knocking in a shot off the post from Meloff.
With her first goal of the season, Meloff gained sole possession of 5th place on the Golden Eagle all-time list for career goals scored with 16. Her three points in the match also tied her for seventh on the all-time list for career points.
Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Brown (left) notched the first win of her career in a shutout fashion. She made five saves on the day while keeping the Chattanooga attackers at bay.
The Golden Eagles doubled their shots-on-goal figure from their first contest from three to six. The team also reduced its shot total to 10 for the game, earning an impressive shot-on-goal percentage of .600.
The defense was impressive as well on the day, blocking three straight shots in the middle of the second half and helping secure the shutout for Brown. Meloff and Iaciofano led the team with three points each.
The Tech soccer team improved to 1-1 on the season while UTC fell to 1-1.
PURDUE 2, EASTERN ILLINOIS 1 (2OT)
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Panther women’s soccer team fell in double overtime, 2-1, at Purdue on Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Soccer Complex. EIU drops to 0-2 on the year.
The match remained scoreless until the 68th minute when Taylor Niewoit put Purdue (2-0) on the scoreboard first. Niewoit scored from the top of the six-yard box on an assist from Hadley Stuart and Jordan Frick.
EIU responded by netting a goal of its own only seven minutes later when junior Caitlin Greene recorded her first career goal. The Freeport, Ill., native headed the ball into the back of the net on a corner kick by sophomore Allie Lakie who posted her first career assist.
With only four minutes and 30 seconds remaining in double overtime, Alex Hairston scored her second goal of the year from just outside the top of the 18-yard box to seal the victory for the Boilermakers.
The Boilermakers posted 22 more shots (30-8) than the Panthers and 10 more shots on goal (13-3). EIU took six fewer corner kicks (8-2) and committed two fewer fouls (7-5).
Greene paced the Panthers with two shots on goal while Kristin Germann also added a shot on goal. Makaela Nellams led Purdue with seven shots, including four on goal.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 0, SAINT LOUIS 0
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Senior Renee Kertz made her collegiate soccer debut a memorable one as the Southeast Missouri soccer team tied Saint Louis, 0-0, at Houck Stadium on Sunday night.
Kertz, who lettered four times for the Southeast softball team, made four second-half saves, as the Billikens (0-1-1) turned up the offensive pressure in the final regulation frame.
This is the second-consecutive season that the Redhawks (0-1-1) and Billikens have played to a scoreless tie.
Offense was particularly hard to come by for both teams in the first half. SLU attempted four shots while Southeast countered with three in the opening 45 minutes of play. The Billikens put together the best chance in the 44th minute when Jamei Borges corralled a loose ball in front of the 18-yard box and drilled a shot that clanged off the near post.
SLU held a territorial advantage in the second half, outshooting Southeast 12-2 in the final regulation frame. The Redhawks created an opportunity in the 52nd minute as Erin Shulman got free in front of the penalty area and launched a shot that eluded BIlliken keeper Katie Walsh, but sailed a couple inches high.
Despite all the attempts, SLU did not place a shot on goal until there were just over 16 minutes left in regulation. The Billikens surged in the final moments, taking three more shots on goal in the last seven minutes. Kertz made her best save with just over five minutes left as Abbey Stock fired a high, sinking shot from 20 yards out, forcing Kertz to make an athletic leaping save to punch it over the goal.
With Kertz helping guide them to overtime, the Redhawks defense picked it up. The contest mirrored the first half of play in terms of a lack of scoring chances for both sides. Only one shot was attempted between the two teams in the extra 20 minutes of play.
Walsh made two saves to hold Southeast off the board.
