BELMONT 1, UNION 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont women's soccer team (2-0) extended its win streak to two on Friday afternoon at Rose Park.  The Bruins held off visiting Union (0-2), earning their first shutout of the season with the 1-0 victory.

BU opened the matchup aggressively, maintaining control of the the tempo and ball possession time for much of the half.  The stanza was marked by numerous near scoring misses that brought the large crowd of fans to their feet.  Senior Lauren Paynter (Danville, Ky.) tallied three consecutive near misses from crosses that were just seconds off perfect timing for her feet.  Finally, she fired one straight at the Lady Bulldogs goalkeeper who nearly bobbled the ball into the back of the net in the 44th minute of action.  Despite a strong effort, Belmont was unable to take the lead heading into the break.

As the second half opened, it was Union's chance to turn up the heat.  After losing the battle for possession throughout the first stanza, the Lady Bulldogs hustled and finally crossed midfield to threaten the Bruin goal.  However, BU's defense turned on the afterburners to maintain control, keeping netminder junior Nicole Berner (Randolph, N.J.) from having to do much work between the posts.

The Bruins made one strong push on both sides of the ball beginning in the 20th minute and yielded favorable results five minutes later.  Sophomore Allie Hicks (Carmel, Ind.) was a fed a perfect cross by freshman Sydney Scheben (Union, Ky.) and beat the Union goalkeeper for the lone goal of the contest.

Belmont held the advantage in shots, 8-0, and corner kicks, 3-0.

Paynter notched a game-high four shots, followed by Hicks' three.  Newcomer Katie Proud (Knoxville, Tenn.) also came away with one shot.

Berner logged 90 minutes in goal en route to her first shutout of the season.

The Bruins return to action on Sunday afternoon at Rose Park, hosting first-time opponent Appalachian State.  Match time is set for 2 p.m.

JACKSONVILLE STATE 2, JACKSON STATE 0
JACKSON, Miss. - The Jacksonville State women's soccer team notched its second consecutive win on the road on Friday with a 2-0 win over Jackson State in the capital city of the Magnolia state.

The Gamecocks moved to 2-1 on the season, while the Tigers of Jackson State fell to 0-3.  Both squads had to endure a lengthy weather delay with 39 minutes left in the contest.  Jax State has now won two straight over the Tigers since the two programs posted a 1-1 draw in 2010.

Before the delay, Jax State held a 1-0 advantage after posting the first goal of the contest in the 18th minute.  A pair of sophomores constructed the scoring play as Jackie Rush netted the ball off of a touch volley from a Jessica Monahan serve.  The goal was Rush's first as a Gamecock, while Monahan's assist was also a career-first.

JSU added a goal in the 60th minute off the foot of sophomore Courtney Hurt.  The Huntsville, Ala.-product took an assist from senior Austen Stoelting and went one-on-one against the Tiger keeper and finished off the scoring opportunity.  It marks the second-straight game in which she has recorded a goal.  The dish out by Stoelting was her second of her career and first since the 2010 season.

The Gamecocks put together an offensive onslaught with a season-high 23 shot attempts, with 13 on goal opportunities.  JSU struck for 11 shots in the first 45 minutes and 12 in the second half.  The shot total is the most since last season's UT Martin contest to wrap up the 2011 campaign.

The Tigers were limited to just seven shots and Jax State goalkeeper Katelyn Geddings recorded just one save in the contest.

JSU continues its early-season road trip on Sunday as they make the short drive Huntsville, Ala. for a 2 p.m. contest with Alabama A&M.

KENTUCKY 2, EASTERN KENTUCKY 1
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team nearly forced overtime against host Kentucky, but the Wildcats escaped with a 2-1 win over the Colonels Friday night at the UK Soccer Complex.

Junior Nikki Donnelly hit the crossbar on a shot in the 86th minute that would have leveled the score at 2-all. EKU (2-1) was seeking its first-ever win versus Kentucky (2-0) and has now dropped each of the last two meetings by counts of 2-1.

Kentucky got on the board 20 minutes into the contest when Ashley VanLandingham scored her second goal of the season on a free kick from 25 yards out.

Early in the second half, the Wildcats capitalized on a corner kick to extend their lead to 2-0. Arin Gilliland headed in the cross from Danielle Krohn.

Eastern Kentucky finally found the back of the net in the 69th minute thanks to an own goal. The Colonels nearly tied the game with four minutes left in regulation when Donnelly hit the crossbar.

EKU is back in action one week from today, Aug. 31, when the Colonels travel to Cincinnati.

MIAMI (Fla.) 4, MOREHEAD STATE 0
CORAL CABLES, Fla. - After a lengthy lightning delay, the Morehead State soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Miami (Fla.) at Cobb Stadium on Friday evening. The match was called in the 79th minute due to inclement weather.

The Hurricanes improved their record to 2-1, while the Eagles dropped to 0-3 on the season.

The Hurricanes connected off a corner just five minutes into the match when senior defender Ali Brennan found a loose ball in the box. Miami scored again of its second corner six minutes later when freshman forward Jasmine Paterson placed the ball into the near post.

The final goal of the half came from freshman midfielder Ally Andreini at the top of the box in the 20th minute.

Brennan struck again for the Hurricanes in the 64th minute, when she found the back of the net off her head for the second time.

Due to lightning the game was called in the 79th minute and the Hurricanes earned the victory.

Freshman midfielder Teig Palmateer took MSU’s only shot of the night.

The Eagles are back in action on Sunday at noon ET when they visit Florida International. Live stats are available at www.fiusports.com

UMKC 1, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 0
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri soccer team put together a furious rally in the second half, but a first-half UMKC goal sent the Redhawks to a 1-0 loss at Houck Stadium on Friday night.

The Kangaroos (1-1-1) got a goal from Taylor Bare in the 26th minute, which proved to be all UMKC needed to send Southeast to 0-2-1 in the young season.

After a Southeast shot created an early corner kick, UMKC fired eight of the next nine shots in the first half. In the 26th minute, Hunter Wagoner played a long ball that went behind the Redhawks defense and found Bare, who slipped in all alone and beat Renee Kertz for her first goal of the year.

The Redhawks put together a glorious opportunity in the closing seconds of the opening frame. Amy Ward's long throw in made its way to Hayley Abbott, who got a shot from in close that Kangaroo keeper Jami Finnell turned aside, preserving the lead going into the break.

Southeast came out energized in the second half and put UMKC on the defensive for the remainder of the contest. The Redhawks appeared to tie the contest in the 66th minute when Ashley Geist launched a shot from outside that caromed off Finnell to Courtney Luehmann. Luehmann fired a shot from the middle that Finnell again steered aside and Jacey Boyko tapped the loose ball in the net, but was whistled offside beforehand.

The Kangaroos stepped it up defensively from there, holding the Redhawks without a shot over the next 22 minutes. Southeast put together its best opportunity of the contest in the 88th minute. Erin Shulman got taken down in the 18-yard box, creating a penalty kick, which Torey Byrd took. Finnell, the reigning Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, made a diving save to keep the Redhawks off the board.

Southeast drew two more corner kicks in the closing minutes, but was unable to solve Finnell.

The Redhawks outshot the Kangaroos, 8-5, in the second half, but UMKC held a 14-11 overall advantage in shots. Southeast won the battle in corner kicks, 6-5, including a 5-2 advantage in the second half.

Kertz made her second consecutive start in goal for the Redhawks and stopped five of the six shots she faced. Finnell stopped all eight shots that came her way for UMKC.

The Redhawks conclude their homestand on Sunday when they host Drake. Kickoff at Houck Stadium is at 6:30 p.m.

TENNESSEE TECH 1, HIGH POINT 1
HIGH POINT, N.C. -
Following an opening weekend that left them with both win and a loss, the Tennessee Tech soccer team fought to 1-1 tie with the Panthers of High Point Friday night under the lights of Vert Stadium.

The Golden Eagles got off to a quick start, scoring within the first six minutes of the match for the second straight game. Senior defender Leigh Heffner nailed a shot into the back of the net off of a free kick from midfield.

High Point answered the Heffner goal in the 34th minute off the foot of Becca Hemby, the Panthers leading scorer on the season.

The defense played great during the contest forcing 16 of High Point's 25 shots away from the goal completely. Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Brown, who played the entire match, made eight saves in the match, a career high.

Tech put up five shots-on-goal during the contest, including two from sophomore Amanda Koch.

Heffner, who received votes earlier this week for OVC Defensive Player of the Week, logged a staggering 110 minutes in the contest while playing the entire game including both overtime periods. The minutes she logged in the contest we enough to catapult her to eight on the TTU all-time list for career minutes played with 5,147.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. CT contest against the Wildcats of Davidson in Davidson, North Carolina. The match will mark the first time Tech soccer has taken on Davidson.

SIUE 1, DRAKE 0
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The SIUE women's soccer team picked up its first victory of the 2012 season on Friday night, knocking off Drake University 1-0 at Korte Stadium.

Sophomore midfielder Michelle Auer scored the game's only goal just six and a half minutes into the game, scoring with the help of an assist from junior Meagan Iffrig.

The Cougars moved to 1-2 on the season with the win, and head coach Derek Burton had nothing but good things to say about his team's performance.

It was a dream start for SIUE, who had created numerous chances but failed to score in each of its first two games.
Iffrig won the ball on the left edge of the penalty area, and then delivered a high cross to the back post.  Auer was able to beat her defender before volleying in what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.

After the teams came out of halftime, Drake created a number of great scoring chances, but freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley and the Cougar defense stood firm to preserve the lead.

Pelley recorded three saves for SIUE, while the Cougars earned five corner kicks while conceding none.

The Cougars will now have a week away from game action before they host the SIUE Tournament at Korte Stadium next weekend.  SIUE will face UMKC on Friday night at 7:30 pm, before hosting Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm.

AUSTIN PEAY 3, APPALACHIAN STATE 1
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team opened the home schedule in style, Friday night, against Appalachian State. The Lady Govs used three second-half goals to upend the Mountaineers, 3-1, at Morgan Brothers Field.

The Lady Govs (2-1-0) fell behind early to the Mountaineers. A defensive breakdown gave Appalachian State’s (0-2-0) Jenna Caudle a breakaway in the game’s first minute, resulting in a blast to the left side that gave the Mountaineers an early one goal lead.

The remainder of the first half was fought primarily in the middle of the park. Both squads attempted just four shots in the opening 45 minutes. The Lady Govs offense regrouped at halftime and put together a much stronger push in the second half, resulting in 11 shot attempts after the break.

Austin Peay got on the board in the 62nd minute thanks to junior Joceline Quiceno. A feed from junior Tatiana Ariza found Quiceno’s foot and she put away the equalizer to the upper left corner.

Joceline’s twin sister Andy Quiceno netted the game-winner in the 78th minute. Ariza, who flummoxed the Mountaineers for much of the second half with long runs and tight crosses, fit the ball through a crowd and Andy slid the ball past Appalachian State’s Amy Kolowsky to the bottom left corner.

Senior Emily Perkins provided the insurance goal in the 86th minute. A poor clear by Appalachian State and an athletic move from Perkins led to a breakaway that beat Kolowsky and ensured the Lady Govs victory.

Perkins led the Lady Govs with two shots on goal, while Tatiana Ariza led Austin Peay with three total shots.

Junior keeper Haylee Shoaff picked up two saves en route to her season’s first victory. Kolowsky had five saves, four in the second half, in defeat.

The Lady Govs have the remainder of the weekend off before resuming the season at 7 p.m., Tuesday, in a home tilt with Lipscomb.

MISSISSIPPI STATE 3, UT MARTIN 2
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team held a halftime advantage and was in prime position to force overtime this evening against Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State, but the Bulldogs came up with a late goal that resulted in a 3-2 Skyhawk loss at the MSU Soccer Field this evening.

UT Martin (0-2) led for nearly 38 minutes thanks to a goal by Kendyl Wilson in the 11th minute. It was the seventh career goal for the senior out of Collierville, Tenn.

Mississippi State would then tie the match in the 49th minute and go ahead in the 66th minute before the Skyhawks received a clutch play from a freshman for the equalizer. Making her season debut, Saphyra Coombs-James evened the score at 2-all with a header goal in the 79th minute. Just as momentum seemed to sway back in UT Martin’s favor, Mississippi State’s Elisabeth Sullivan netted her second goal of the match exactly 60 seconds after the Skyhawks tied the match that turned out to be the eventual game-winner.

Overall, UT Martin outshot Mississippi State by a 12-11 margin, putting four of its shots on goal. The Skyhawks displayed a balanced offensive attack tonight, as seven players attempted a shot but no player attempted more than two shots. In goal, sophomore Mariah Klenke made three stops while playing all 90 minutes.

The Skyhawks came out firing – attempting the first two shots of the match. After a Hannah McGowen attempt swerved left in the seventh minute, Wilson found paydirt at the 10:20 mark. Taking a cross feed from sophomore newcomer Melisa Erturk, Wilson snuck a shot that deflected off Mississippi State’s goalkeeper Skylar Rosson to give UT Martin a 1-0 lead.

Klenke made back-to-back snares in a span of 5:21 to keep the score at 1-0 after Wilson’s goal. The Skyhawk offense then seized the pace once again, tallying four straight shots in a 2:33 stretch before settling for a 1-0 halftime advantage.

Less than four minutes into the second half, Mississippi State tied the match. UT Martin attempted its first shot of the second half at the 62:13 mark, as McGowen lined a shot on goal that wound up in the hands of Rosson.

Sullivan then gave the Bulldogs a lead with a goal with 24:47 left to play, but it wouldn’t take long for the Skyhawks to respond. After checking into the match at the 74:33 mark, Coombs-James made an immediate impact, evening the score at 2-all with a header off a right-side cross from McGowen at the 78:49 mark.

After an initial shot on goal by Sullivan was blocked, she recovered to scoot a shot past Klenke for a goal just one minute later, putting Mississippi State ahead 3-0. After multiple substitutions by UT Martin head coach Phil McNamara to keep fresh legs in the match, the Skyhawks could only get off one more shot attempt for the duration of the match. A shot by senior Midori Sera with 1:11 remaining sailed high and time ran out on the Skyhawks’ comeback bid.

UT Martin will wrap up its participation in the Bulldog Classic on Sunday, Aug. 26, when it takes on Mississippi Valley State at 11 a.m.
