EVANSVILLE 2, MURRAY STATE 0
MURRAY, Ky. - The Racer soccer team dropped its match on Sunday afternoon to Evansville 2-0 at Cutchin Field. Racheal Foxley had two shots on goal in the game and Yi Du recorded seven saves in the loss.
Both of Evansville’s goals came two minutes apart in the first half as Kayla Smith netted the first in the 24th minute while Kristen Davis added the second in the 26th minute for the Purple Aces (1-2). Murray State (0-2) had a few good looks at goal in the second half, but all attempts found their way to the Evansville keeper.
The Racers started five freshmen on Sunday and had six in all appear in the contest, in front of another solid crowd at “The Hill.”
MSU returns to action Friday for a match against Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. The Racers return home on Sept. 9 against Northern Kentucky.
EASTERN ILLINOIS 3, CLEVELAND STATE 2 (OT)
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Senior Kristin Germann posted a hat trick in the Panthers 3-2 overtime victory over Cleveland State, scoring her final goal in the 93rd minute to give the Eastern Illinois women s soccer team its first win of the year. EIU improved to 1-3 on the season.
Germann s final goal came from two yards out on the left off a save from Viking goalkeeper Becca Coleman who knocked away a Jessie Morgan shot from the right.
EIU posted the first goal of the match in the 30th minute when Germann netted a penalty kick. Caitlin Greene was fouled in the box on a corner kick by Valerie Stahl to set up the penalty kick. The Panthers took its 1-0 advantage into the locker room.
Only nine minutes into the second stanza, Cleveland State s Kelcey Fischer scored her first goal of the year from 25 yards out on the left. Vickie Havas also scored her first goal of the year when she put the Vikings ahead, 2-1, in the 74th minute.
The Panthers responded less than minute later when Germann reentered the contest following the Vikings goal, finding the back of the net from four yards out on the right off a pass from Samantha Roumayah.
EIU took six more shots (21-15) than Cleveland State, including two more shots on goal (8-6). The Panthers also took two more corner kicks (6-4) and committed three more fouls (11-8).
Germann paced the Panther offense with seven shots (three on goal) while Meagan Radloff added three shots. Morgan, Roumayah and Ashley Streid all contributed two shots.
Freshman Emily Hinton (1-0) posted her first career victory between the pipes for EIU, making one save in the match s final 19 minutes. Starting goalkeeper Jessica Taldone made three saves and surrendered two goals in 74 minutes of action.
Cleveland State also used two goalkeepers with Becca Coleman (0-1) recording the loss, allowing two goals and making one save in 48 minutes of play. Sarah Wood made four saves and allowed one goal, playing the entire first half.
Offensively, Jamie Avona led the Vikings with five shots (one on goal) while Shea Levi added three shots (one on goal).
EIU returns to action on Friday, Aug. 31 at Indiana State. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
DAVIDSON 2, TENNESSEE TECH 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Tennessee Tech soccer team, which has scored in the first six minutes of its previous two matches, had the tables turned on it Sunday afternoon when Davidson scored in the sixth minute and defeated the Golden Eagles 2-0.
The Wildcats made things difficult during the match, allowing Tech just four shots, and none of them on goal. Julia Singley scored early, forcing the Golden Eagles to play from behind the entire match. Tori Krause added to the lead later in the half as Tech spent much of the match on the defensive side of the ball trying to prevent another Davidson goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Brown, who had eight saves in Friday's match against High Point, made a career-high nine saves throughout the match.
The defense, which was attacked early and often, saw 23 shots thrown its way throughout the contest. Despite the brutal attack by the Wildcats offense, which recorded 18 more shots after the second goal, the Golden Eagles didn't allow a goal after the 26th minute.
Brown stopped the final seven shots-on-goal she faced.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Friday, August 31 when they return home for a match against Northern Kentucky. Game-time is set for 3 p.m. CT. Tech will then hit the road on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest against new SEC member, Missouri.
JACKSOVNILLE STATE 5, ALABAMA A&M 0
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Three first half goals propelled the Jacksonville State women's soccer team to a 5-0 thumping of in-state foe Alabama A&M on Sunday at Bulldog Field in Huntsville, Ala.
JSU turned in its third consecutive win and completed the weekend sweep against the Southwestern Athletic Conference. On Friday, JSU turned in 2-0 road win at Jackson State. With the win, the Gamecocks moved to 3-1 on the season and the first three-match winning streak since stringing together a trio of victories in 2009. The successful early start is the best since 2002 when Jax State started that campaign 4-1. The last time the Red and White secured three or more road wins during a season came in 2005.
The five goals posted by JSU are the most since a lopsided 7-0 win in 2010 over Southern (La.) University. The Gamecocks now lead the all-time series with AAMU, 3-1-0.
Senior Austen Stoelting put the Gamecocks on the board with a goal within the first four minutes of the contest. The goal was the Terre Haute, Ind.-native's second career goal. JSU, who took 15 of its 30 shots in the first half, put its second ball in the net off the foot of freshman Alexis Rodriguez for her first collegiate goal of her young career. Playing in her hometown, sophomore Courtney Hurt assisted Rodriguez on the goal.
JSU added a third first-half goal as the period was winding down. Hurt sent a solid cross in to the box and was mishandled by an AAMU defender and the ball went across the line in to the net.
With a sizable lead starting the final half, it did not take the Gamecocks offense to re-energize out of the halftime break. Senior Nathalee Lariviere beat two Bulldog defenders near the 47th minute to put the ball into the back of the net. The goal was Lariviere's first of the season and eighth of her career. Another true freshman added her name in the goals-scored column on the box score as Katt Dowd connected on her first goal of her career from 40 yards out in the 61st minute to close out the scoring for the match.
Jax State's stifling defense allowed just four total AAMU shots with all coming in the final 45 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Geddings played the first half, while senior Ali Koenig saw her first action in the second half since an injury last season against South Alabama.
Offensively, with the 30 shot attempts, it was the most since JSU was credited with 35 scoring opportunities versus SU in 2010. The Gamecocks posted 13 on-goal chances on Sunday, the most since they carded 18 a season ago against Chattanooga.
For the second-straight weekend, the Gamecocks will be travelling next weekend as they journey to Troy, Ala. to take part in the Trojan Classic. JSU will face Stetson on Friday, Aug. 30 at Noon. Jax State opens the month of September next Sunday with a 3 p.m. match up with Louisiana Tech.
APPALACHIAN STATE 1, BELMONT 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Despite a strong effort on both sides of the ball, the Belmont women's soccer team (2-1) was handed its first loss of the season at home on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins were edged 1-0 by visiting first-time opponent Appalachian State (1-2) at Rose Park.
The matchup was nearly an even battle of wills throughout the 90 minutes. In the first half, each team was only able to fire off one shot due to strong defensive efforts on both sides of the ball. Both squads kept fresh legs on the field but could not gain an advantage in the contest.
In the second stanza, the teams continued their back and forth battle well into the half. In the final 15 minutes, the squads ramped up their intensity in hopes of scoring before the end of regulation. Similar to Friday night, BU had several near misses on scoring opportunities but just barely missed on connecting inside of the box. The Mountaineers attacked the goal in the final seven minutes and used a rebound to squeeze a header into the back of the BU net. The Bruins scrambled in the waning minutes but were unable to find the equalizer goal and were handed their first loss of the season.
Senior Lauren Paynter (Danville, Ky.) led the Bruins with a game-high three shots. Sophomore Elise DeTrude (Carmel, Ind.) followed with a pair of shots.
Junior Nicole Berner (Randolph, N.J.) went the distance between the posts in the effort.
UT MARTIN 6, MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 1
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team scored less than 100 seconds into today’s match against Mississippi Valley State and never let up, outshooting the opposition by a 32-4 margin in a 6-1 win to conclude the Bulldog Invitational.
Today’s victory is the first for the Skyhawks (1-2) in 2012 and is also the first time that UT Martin has generated at least six goals since a 7-1 win at Lambuth on Sept. 24, 2007. The team also produced eight assists this afternoon, tying a single-game school record that was set twice during the 2007 season (against Bacone on Sept. 14 and Christian Brothers on Sept. 16).
A total of 11 different Skyhawks accounted for at least one point this afternoon, as the six goals each came from a different player. Abi Sanvee got things started with a goal just 98 seconds into the match, while Jaclyn Heckle (43rd minute), Saphyra Coombs-James (49th), Kendyl Wilson (55th), Midori Sera (60th) and Alyssa Curtis (69th) also found the back of the net today. Wilson also added a pair of assists, as did Coombs-James, Dominika Conc, Lucy Pater, Ashley Reveiz, Jenna Merrill and Ashlie Watson.
Sophomore Mariah Klenke earned the victory in goal, making a pair of saves while playing the full 90 minutes.
After the conclusion of the match, Coombs-James, Wilson and Conc were named to the all-tournament squad.
In what would be a good omen for the Skyhawks, Sanvee’s goal was the first shot attempt of the match. Wilson sent a cross from the right side, which Sanvee volleyed in at the far post. It was Sanvee’s seventh career goal in a Skyhawk uniform.
UT Martin would attempt seven more shots before Mississippi Valley State would attempt its first of the match, which Klenke saved at the 25:45 mark.
Five more Skyhawk shots followed before another goal was added to the scoreboard. After a header by Merrill was partially saved, Heckle recovered the loose ball for a header goal at the 42:29 mark. Both Merrill and Watson were credited with assists on the play as UT Martin cruised to a 2-0 advantage at the halftime break.
Coombs-James came up with her second goal in as many matches early in the second half. The freshman received a cross from the left side and scooted a shot past the Devilette goalkeeper at the 48:50 mark. Pater and Reveiz each received an assist on the play.
That started a barrage of goals for the Skyhawks, who netted four goals in the second half alone. Wilson’s goal at the 54:26 mark came off a corner kick opportunity for UT Martin, as the senior struck from 17 yards out for her seventh career goal and second in as many matches.
The next goal came via Sera, who made the score 5-0 at the 59:39 mark. A pass across the box was put in at the far post for the senior out of San Francisco, Calif. Wilson and Coombs-James both assisted on the goal.
Mississippi Valley State got on the scoreboard at the 66:48 mark, but the Skyhawks answered right back with their sixth and final goal of the match. Conc delivered a pass across the box for a streaking Curtis, who would put in her first goal of the season and sixth of her young career at UT Martin.
The Skyhawks continue their five-match road swing next weekend when they hit the Hoosier State for a pair of tough nonconference tests. UT Martin will visit Purdue on Friday, Aug. 31 at 6 p.m., followed by a contest at Butler on Sunday, Sept. 2 at noon.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 2, DRAKE 1
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Erin Shulman and Courtney Luehmann tallied goals as the Southeast Missouri soccer team broke out of its offensive slump to defeat Drake, 2-1, at Houck Stadium on Sunday night.
The Redhawks close their season-opening home stand 1-2-1 while handing the Bulldogs (2-2) their second-consecutive loss.
Sunday's contest started in similar fashion to Friday's match with UMKC, where Southeast fell behind early on. An own goal put Drake on the board in the sixth minute. A free kick taken by Brittany Schuling was moving past the goal, but redirected off a Southeast defender into the net.
Southeast went on the attack from there, taking four shots in the next 10 minutes. The Redhawks nearly capitalized when they got consecutive corner kicks with about 15 minutes gone by. Jacey Boyko played two crosses near the goal that Hayley Abbott got a head on, but one was stopped and the other sailed a bit high, keeping the Bulldogs ahead.
Southeast snapped a scoreless streak of 257:14 in the 22nd minute. Shulman found a seam in the Drake defense, but was tackled in the 18-yard box to draw a penalty kick. The sophomore forward made good on her attempt for her first goal of the season.
Drake attempted six of the final eight shots over the last 23 minutes of the first half, but Renee Kertz made three saves to keep the score tied 1-1 at the break.
Defense dominated at the start of the second half as the teams combined for only three shots in the first 14 minutes.
Southeast took its first lead of the season in the 60th minute. Meg Herndon played a high ball into the penalty area that deflected off a Drake defender to Luehmann at the top of the box. Luehmann placed a low line drive shot past a diving Kalena Litch to make it 2-1.
The Bulldogs had a look to tie the contest in the 67th minute when Laura Moklestad found shooting space from 20 yards out that beat Kertz, but clanged off the goal post. That attempt was the only shot the Redhawks' defense allowed in the final 30:24 of play.
Drake finished with a slim, 12-11, advantage in shots, though Southeast attempted seven corner kicks and yielded only two attempts defensively. Kertz stopped six of seven shots to pick up her first collegiate victory.
The Redhawks go on the road next weekend to compete in the Tropical Smoothie Invitational in Lexington, Ky. Southeast opens the tournament against Louisville on Friday night.
