UT MARTIN 2, KENNESAW STATE 0
KENNESAW, Ga. - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team recorded its second shutout of the season this afternoon with a 2-0 triumph against Kennesaw State at the KSU Soccer Stadium.

Today’s result was the fourth career shutout for sophomore goalkeeper Mariah Klenke, who faced 16 shots and corralled six saves for UT Martin (3-4-2), who has not lost since Sept. 7.

Offensively, the Skyhawks relied on senior Midori Sera and freshman Saphyra Coombs-James. Sera came up with her second goal of the season in the 33rd minute, while Coombs-James added a big insurance goal in the 65th minute for her third goal in 2012. UT Martin’s Dominika Conc and Hannah McGowen each were credited with an assist.

Klenke was tested early, as she came up with a save just 77 seconds into today’s match. It was the first of four Kennesaw State shot attempts through the match’s first 11:41.

After Alyssa Curtis attempted the Skyhawks’ first shot of the match at the 13:00 mark, Klenke registered two more saves in a span of 57 seconds to keep the match scoreless.

Kendyl Wilson then put UT Martin’s first shot on goal in the 17th minute, igniting a barrage of shots by the Skyhawks. Jaclyn Heckle’s shot on goal at the 28:03 mark was saved by Owls’ goalkeeper Melissa Hutto, but UT Martin would break through with a goal almost six minutes later.

At the 32:57 mark, Sera received a feed from Conc and found the upper left portion of the net to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 advantage. It was the sixth goal in 31 career matches in a UT Martin uniform for the San Francisco, Calif. native.

Kennesaw State came roaring back, however, driving two more shots on goal in a 53-second stretch. However, Klenke registered saves on both attempts to keep the score at 1-0.

UT Martin’s Lucy Pater almost gave the Skyhawks a two-goal lead just before halftime, but her header off a corner kick was snared by Hutto.

Klenke made her sixth save of the day at the 54:42 mark, preserving UT Martin’s shutout. Curtis struck a shot on goal in the 62nd minute that forced Hutto to scramble for a save.

After checking into the match at the 61:28 mark, Coombs-James made her impact felt immediately with a goal in the 65th minute. The Brampton, Ontario native found the back of the net off a corner kick set piece by McGowen, who tied a team-high with her third assist of the season.

From that point on, Kennesaw State would tally four shot attempts but none were on goal. UT Martin sophomore Ashley Reveiz nearly found paydirt in the 81st minute but her shot was scooped up by Hutto.

Today’s match was the final nonconference tuneup for the Skyhawks, who open Ohio Valley Conference play with a big match at Southeast Missouri on Friday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m. The match will feature the defending OVC Tournament champion (UT Martin) and the defending OVC regular-season champion (Southeast Missouri). The two teams split last year’s regular season series, with each team picking up road victories.

SAINT LOUIS 1, SIUE 0
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -Alli Reimer found the back of the net with just 61 seconds remaining in the regulation Sunday lifting Saint Louis to a 1-0 victory over SIUE in women's soccer at Korte Stadium.

The Cougars, now 3-3-1, lost for the first time in four games, despite outshooting the Billikens by a 17-6 margin.

Reimer's goal came as a result of a corner kick. SIUE goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley made the initial save, but the Cougars defense failed to clear away the rebound.

SIUE held a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first half. The Cougars then outshot the Billikens 10-4 over the final 45 minutes. Meagan Iffrig and Katye Skrivan had four shots each for the Cougars.

Saint Louis improved to 2-4-2 thanks in part to goalkeeper Katie Walsh. Walsh made nine saves in the win for the Billikens.

SIUE now has a week before beginning Ohio Valley Conference play.

The Cougars entertain Eastern Illinois in the OVC opener Sunday at 1 p.m.

DRAKE 1, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Panther women’s soccer team was shut out for the third consecutive match on Sunday afternoon, falling at Missouri Valley Conference foe Drake, 1-0. EIU concludes non-conference action with a 2-7 record.

The contest remained scoreless until the 68th minute when Kelsey Pigg scored her second goal of the season on a ball served into the box by Brittany Schuling, giving the Bulldogs the 1-0 advantage. Drake won its fifth straight match and improved to 8-2 overall on the year.

The Bulldogs took three more shots (15-12) than the Panthers, including two more shots on goal (6-4). EIU took two more corner kicks (3-1) than Drake and committed one less foul (6-5).

Senior Kristin Germann paced the Panther attack with three shots (two on goal) while freshmen Molly Hawkins and Hannah Miller both added two shots. Ashlie Stokes led the Bulldogs with four shots.

Jessica Taldone (1-7) took the loss in goal for EIU as the redshirt-junior allowed one goal while making five saves. Kalena Litch (8-2) posted the win for Drake between the pipes, making four saves and recording the shutout.

The Panthers return to action in their Ohio Valley Conference opener at SIU Edwardsville on Sept. 23 at 1 p.m.

MURRAY STATE 1, SOUTH ALABAMA 0
MURRAY, Ky. -Murray State’s Taylor Stevens (Fort Wayne, Ind.) blasted a goal into the back of the South Alabama net with just 1.3 seconds left in overtime to give the Racers a thrilling 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Cutchin Field.

Stevens’ goal came off of a Megg Hudson ricochet shot that landed right in front of South Alabama’s goalkeeper. Stevens drilled the shot and gave the Racers their second consecutive victory and a sweep over the state of Alabama. The goal was Stevens’ first of her career.

The Jaguars’ best opportunities to score came in the 55th and 59th minutes when a pair of shots hit off of the MSU post. Both teams played aggressively and had multiple solid looks at the goal to break the scoreless tie in regulation.
Latesha Stevenson recorded her second-straight shutout for the Racers (2-5) in the match while also recording a career-high seven saves in the victory. Both teams had seven shots on goal in the contest, while the Jaguars outshot Murray State 20-15.

Murray State will open OVC play next weekend as it travels to Austin Peay for a 2 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 23. The Racers’ first three conference matches will be played on the road and will return home to Cutchin Field on Oct. 5 against Belmont.

AUSTIN PEAY 6, ALABAMA A&M 1
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.
- A five-goal first half from Austin Peay State University women's soccer team got the Lady Govs out to a fast start against Alabama A&M, Sunday. Austin Peay (4-5-0) defeated the Bulldogs, 6-1, for the Lady Govs third victory in a row against the SWAC foe.

The Lady Govs jumped out to a quick lead in the game's first minute. Junior Morgan Zigelsky lofted a shot over the keeper's head from just outside the 18-yard box just 43 seconds into the match. Junior Tatiana Ariza was credited with the assist, the first of two for her in the game.

Zigelsky repaid the favor to her teammate in the eighth minute, assisting on Ariza's third goal of the season. Ariza beat the keeper to the lower right corner, putting the Lady Govs up two and tying her with Ashley Beck (2005-08) for most career goals in Austin Peay history with 30.

Zigelsky scored again on a breakaway in the 13th minute, which ties her with Ariza, senior Emily Perkins and junior Andy Quiceno for the team lead with three goals apiece this season.

Alabama A&M (0-9-0) got one back in the 17th minute on a long goal by Ana Huertas but the Lady Govs would answer. Junior Joceline Quiceno netted her season's second goal in the 40th minute, firing a shot from just outside the box.

Freshman Melissa Fletcher added the final first-half goal just over a minute later on a breakaway. The goal was the first of Fletcher's Lady Govs career.

The Lady Govs were aggressive almost to a fault at times against the Bulldogs. Alabama A&M played with a high backline, resulting in a season-high 12 offsides calls against Austin Peay.

Junior Corey Osborn capped off the scoring similar to how it started. A long shot from the left side of the box sailed over the keeper's head and into the net, resulting in Osborn's first career goal.

Ariza narrowly missed becoming the all-time goal-scoring record-holder in the second half. A misplay by the keeper gave Ariza a good look inside the box, but an Alabama A&M defender threw her body in front of the shot and kept it out of the net.

Austin Peay junior Haylee Shoaff made one save to earn her season's third victory. Marissa Oehler made four saves in the second half for the Bulldogs.

The Lady Govs open Ohio Valley Conference play when they host Murray State at 2 p.m., Sunday.

WRIGHT STATE 2, MOREHEAD STATE 0
DAYTON, Ohio - A goal in the 34th minute proved to be the match-winner for Wright State over the Morehead State soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. The 2-0 loss dropped the Eagles to 0-7-1 on the season, while the Raiders improved to 4-2-3.

Freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Floyd led the Eagles with six saves, while MSU was paced offensively by sophomore Elizabeth McSparin with two shots and sophomore Macy Cobb with one shot on goal.

After 34 scoreless minutes, the Raiders struck first when freshman midfielder Kalee Thompson slipped a ball just inside the post and out of Floyd’s reach. The shot was one of six for WSU in the half, while the Eagles posted one from Cobb.

MSU jumped out to a 4-1 lead in shots midway through the second half, but the Eagles fell short of the second half comeback. The Raiders added an insurance goal in the 89th minute from freshman Ini Umotong.

The Eagles are back in action next Sunday when they begin Ohio Valley Conference play at Eastern Kentucky. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. ET.

JACKSONVILLE STATE 2, SAMFORD 1
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
- Jacksonville State knocked off Samford for the first time since 2002 with
a 2-1 win on Sunday night as JSU wrapped up the non-conference portion of the schedule on the road in Birmingham.

The road win pushed JSU's overall mark to 7-2-1 and have won six of the seven matches away from the confines of the JSU Soccer Field.  Samford falls to 3-5 on the season and begins defending its Southern Conference reign next weekend.

The Bulldogs came out with an attacking style game plan, trying to put the first goal in the net.  The Gamecocks thwarted SU's threat in the early onset of the contest, but the Bulldogs posted the first goal of the contest in the 38th minute.  Amanda Abbott had back-to-back shot attempts and was successful on the second try after the first shot was saved and deflected by JSU goalkeeper, Ali Koenig.  The deflection was sent right back to Abbott for the goal.  SU out-shot Jax State, 22-7 in the contest and had 13 of those 22 scoring chances in the first 45 minutes.

Jax State evened the contest four minutes later as freshman Brianna Boutziouvis netted her fourth goal of the season in the 42nd minute.  The Ottawa, Ontario, Canada-native sent in a one-touch ball from freshman Katt Dowd.  The assist was Dowd's first of her career.

The 1-1 deadlock was intact until Boutziouvis fed a ball to sophomore Courtney Hurt in the 84th minute.  Hurt drove past an SU defender and fired to the left corner post to squeeze the ball into the back of the net.  The goal was her fourth of the season and ranks as one of the top-scorers in Ohio Valley Conference.

JSU had a stalemate defense in the final minutes of the contest to preserve the win over its in-state nemesis.  The pair of goals scored by the Gamecocks were the first two scored against SU since the 2002 win.

The Gamecocks now turn their attention to Ohio Valley Conference action as they travel to Cookeville, Tenn. on Sunday, Sept. 23 against Tennessee Tech.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
