MICHIGAN 3, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Eastern Illinois volleyball completed Marquette Classic play on Saturday, falling in straight sets to #23-Michigan (25-13, 25-16, 25-20).

Panthers move to 3-6 on the season after meeting the Wolverines for the first time ever on the volleyball court and faced their first ranked opponent since 2010 when EIU lost to #9-Washington.

Junior Reynae Hutchinson led the EIU offense with 10 kills and a .269 attack, while freshman libero Stephanie Wallace upped 10 attacks to pace the back row defense.

In net defense, senior Alison Berens led with four blocks, including a pair of solo stuffs.

Michigan (9-1) was led by Jennifer Cross’ 11 kills and Tiffany Morales’ 10 digs.

EIU trailed the Wolverines in all stat categories, but held their own in blocks as UM held on for slight seven-to-five lead at the net.

Michigan jumped ahead 4-1 to start the first set but a solo stuff by Alison Berens helped EIU chip into the lead, yet a 9-4 Wolverine run forced EIU to burn timeout down 13-6.  A block by Ali Berens and Kelsey Roggemann would end the UM run, but the Wolverines would counter with another 8-5 spurt to extend lead to 21-11.  But EIU would fall, 25-13, in the first set following consecutive Panther miscues.  Eastern was out-hit .407 to zero in the set.

A pair of nice deep-court kills by Reynae Hutchinson and soft right-side attack by Abby Saalfrank would help the Panthers enjoy an early 5-2 lead over UM to start to the second frame.  Michigan countered to take lead at 9-8, but a kill down the line by Emily Franklin and a Kelsey Brooke ace would help retake the lead, 10-9.  Consecutive UM points followed sideout play by both squads as EIU used a timeout suddenly down 18-14.  A clutch back row put-down by Hutchinson would end the run and a kill thru the block by Franklin moved EIU to within 21-16 of UM, but the Wolverines would take the set, 25-16, thanks to consecutive Panther errors.

Consecutive Panther block assists helped EIU take an early 2-1 lead to open set three, while a kill off the MU block by Saalfrank knotted the score at 8-8 in early going.  A deep corner kill by Roggemann, followed by a cross-court shot by Hutchinson, gave EIU a 12-11 lead, but UM would counter with consecutive kills to retake the lead at 13-12.  Wolverines would push their lead to four before using the block to a 22-17 advantage over EIU.  Panthers would finish strong, but fall by a 25-20 set score.

Next weekend, Panthers will finish up the non-conference tournament portion of the schedule, traveling to Happy Valley to compete in the two-day Penn State Classic.  EIU will face Duquesne on Friday (Sep. 14) and both Portland and the second-ranked host Nittany Lions on Saturday (Sep. 15).

Junior Allison McCoy (Huntington Beach, Calif.) put Belmont on the board first before the two teams exchanged points back and forth. A kill from junior setter Hannah Miranda (Covington, La.) sparked a 3-0 run for the Bruins.

Belmont scored five unanswered points, including two service aces from junior libero Jamie Lundstrom (La Grange, Ill.) giving the Bruins a 18-9 lead over the Purple Eagles. Behind kills from Youngdahl and Gable and a Jen Myer (New Braunfels, Texas) service ace, Belmont was able to take a 5-1 lead over Niagara in the second set.

Niagara trailed by as many as six points, following a Belmont run paced by kills and a block from McCoy and Youngdahl.

AUSTIN PEAY 3, LAMAR 0; AUSTIN PEAY  3, ALABAMA STATE 0
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Austin Peay won its final two matches at the Bama Bash, defeating Lamar and Alabama State.

Austin Peay didn’t show the effects of a short turnaround at the Hampton Inn Bama Bash, downing Lamar in three sets (25-9, 25-23, 25-16) Saturday morning at Foster Auditorium.

Austin Peay (4-9) returned to the court less than 12 hours after a hard-fought four-set loss to Alabama Friday night. Instead, it roared out of the gates with an impressive 25-9 first set victory against Lamar. The Lady Govs needed only eight kills in the set as they scored an impressive seven service aces, including five by junior middle blocker Lauren Henderson.

Lamar (7-6) bounced back in the second set, but only after finding itself in a five-point, 15-10, hole as Austin Peay dominated the early going. The Cardinals would get back within one point, 21-20, but could not get closer as the Lady Govs held on for the 25-23 win.

The third set was close early with 12 ties and five lead changes in the first 30 points and Lamar held a 14-12 lead. But a 6-0 Austin Peay run turned the tide and a final 6-0 run finished the job in a 25-16 match-ending set win.

Henderson finished with eight kills and five service aces to lead Austin Peay. Senior outside hitter Nikki Doyle posted a team-best 12 kills and sophomore outside hitter Jada Stotts chipped in 10 kills. Austin Peay recorded 37 kills and a .301 attack percentage in the win.

Lamar was held to 22 kills and a .049 attack percentage as Austin Peay recorded 38 digs and five blocks. Sierra Whittaker led the Cardinals with seven kills.

Austin Peay  wrapped up its stay at the Hampton Inn Bama Bash with a three-set victory (25-8, 25-18, 25-15) against Alabama State, Saturday, at Foster Auditorium.

Austin Peay (5-9) led the first and third sets wire-to-wire. The Lady Govs secured a 25-8 first-set win with seven kills – four coming from senior outside hitter Nikki Doyle – and three service aces. The Lady Govs needed 11 kills to post a 25-15 third-set victory, including five from sophomore outside hitter Jada Stotts.
Alabama State (0-11) tested Austin Peay in the second set, forcing seven ties and two lead changes. However, the last of those ties came at 7-7 and Austin Peay used a 7-2 run to break the set open. The Lady Govs closed the set with a 9-4 run to secure the 25-18 win.

Doyle led Austin Peay’s offense with nine kills while Stotts and junior middle blocker Lauren Henderson each added eight kills. The Lady Govs needed 34 kills in the win and posted a .394 attack percentage.

MOREHEAD STATE 3, VALPARAISO 2
MORHEEAD, Ky. - Morehead State's volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Valparaiso Crusaders 3-2 (25-14, 22-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-5) on Saturday at Wetherby Gym. MSU won all three matches on the weekend to win the Eagle Challenge tournament title and claimed its second straight five-set decision today.

The Eagles improved to 5-6 overall. Junior libero Leslie Schellhaas was named tournament Most Valuable Player, while senior setter Caitlin Clark and junior outside hitter Aryn Bohannon earned all-tournament nods as well. The Crusaders dropped to 5-6.

Schellhaas had 59 digs in the three matches, including 25 today, to claim the event's highest individual honor. Against Valpo, Clark posted a double-double with 49 assists and a season-best 20 digs, and Bohannon smashed 19 kills and had 11 digs. Senior right side attacker Ellie Roberson paced the Eagle offense with 22 kills, while senior middle blocker Annie Gruenschlaeger narrowly missed a double-double with 12 kills and eight total blocks. Freshman middle blocker Hannah Sigala contributed a career-high six total blocks.

Valpo libero Sarah Chrabaszcz posted a match-high 32 digs, while Morgan Beil also earned all-tournament honors and had a team-best 10 kills and eight blocks.

The Eagles had advantages in kills (66-40), hitting percentage (.191-.065), assists (58-37), digs (85-76) and blocks (13-11). The dig and block stats were season highs.

MSU hit .306 with 14 kills and cruised to a 25-14 victory to open the match. The Eagles held a 20-17 lead in the second frame, but an 8-2 Crusader run thrwarted an Eagle win. Beil landed three kills in the run. The visitors opened the third set on a 7-2 scoring flurry and never relinquished the lead. MSU committed 11 attack errors in the set.

The Eagles turned the tide in the fourth set, opening up a 7-2 lead of their own. Valpo was limited to an .000 hitting efficiency, and MSU utilized 14 kills to pull away. A 5-0 run to begin the fifth set the tone for the Eagle victory. Roberson tallied four of MSU's 11 kills in the deciding set.

Morehead State travels to Greensboro, N.C. next weekend to face UNC Greensboro, Youngstown State and UNC Wilmington in the Spartan Spiketacular Tournament.

NC CENTRAL 3, TENESSEE STATE 0; TROY 3, TENNESSEE STATE 0
KENNESAW, Ga. - The Tennessee State volleyball team was swept in straight sets in the final two matches of the KSU Owls Invitational by North Carolina Central (19-25, 26-28, 22-25) and Troy (17-25, 22-25, 15-25).
TSU (4-7) hit a paltry .098 on the day and committed 47 errors.

The Tigers were once again led by sophomore outside hitter Naomi Wells who had 22 kills. Sherryce Butler, Jordan Piper and Lindsay Hornsby also had double-digit kills for TSU.

Junior setter Erika Moss was a bright spot for TSU on the day, recording 52 assists for an average of 8.67 assists per set.

Wells was also a force on defense and led the team with 22 digs and five blocks. Senior defensive specialist Calasia Williams was not far behind with 18 digs of her own.

Butler and Wells recorded kills to begin the game against NCCU and put TSU up 2-0 early. The Eagles quickly tied the game at three when Moss hit a bad set. From there NCCU went on a 15-4 run to take a commanding lead. Hornsby and Piper got TSU within four at 20-16, but kills from Eagle attackers put the Tigers at a one set to none disadvantage.

The sides traded points to start the second period and Piper tied the game at 8 with a kill that was assisted by Moss. The rest of the set would feature four team timeouts and a back and forth scoring flurry. With the match tied at 26, a TSU error and a kill from NCCU ended the match at 28-26 in favor of the Eagles.

The Tigers fell behind 6-10 early in the match’s final set, but the Tigers clawed back late to get within one at 22-23. Another late error again doomed the Tigers, and NCCU escaped with a 3-0 victory that was much closer than the score would indicate.

The Tigers seemed overmatched early in the first set against Troy and fell behind 5-10. However, the Tigers hung around until the end of the set and were down by four, 15-19. TSU couldn’t complete the comeback and Troy ended the set on a 6-2 run that included four kills by the team’s attackers.

The second period of the match proved to be much more competitive and the team’s opened to a 9-9 tie. An 11-3 Troy run from that point gave the squad an insurmountable lead and Troy ended the set with four consecutive kills from Blair Winston.

Already behind by two sets, the Tigers found themselves down 2-8 early in the match’s final frame. Nine errors compared to just eight kills doomed TSU and the team fell 15-25.

TSU will seek to get back in the win column in the team’s first home match of the season on Sept. 11 against Arkansas Pine-Bluff  at 7 p.m.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Tennessee Tech volleyball team battled through a tough second day at the WKU Invitational Saturday, dropping back-to-back 3-0 losses to IUPUI and No. 10 Dayton as the challenging early-season road stretch continued.

Tech slipped to 1-7 overall in 2012 with all eight matches on the road, and the schedule returns to the road next weekend for the Samford Invitational.

On Saturday, Tech lost a morning match to IUPUI, 25-10, 25-18 and 25-16, as the Jaguars improved to 6-4.

Four Tech attack errors and a Kortni Wright kill followed, pushing the Jags lead to 15-5. The IUPUI lead grew to as many as 15 and that proved to be the final margin as the Jaguars took the first set, 25-10.

The Golden Eagles put up a much stiffer fight in the second set, controlling the early portion before reaching a 15-15 tie. IUPUI got four kills from Fair and Tech made two bad sets, resulting in a seven-point Jaguar run and a 22-15 lead. It proved to be the difference in the set as IUPUI took a 25-18 win.

A pair of aces and two Golden Eagle attack errors helped IUPUI take a 5-1 lead in the third set, and that lead grew to five, 14-9. A Tech timeout helped turn the momentum and a three-point run cut the Jags lead to two, 15-13. IUPUI came back from a timeout with a three-point run of its own to reestablish a five-point cushion at 18-13. From there, the Jags cruised to a 25-16 and the three-set win.

Tech managed a solid .250 hitting mark in the first set but the Flyers connected for a .485 mark. Tech slipped to a negative hitting percentage in the second set, before bouncing back in the third set with a .118 mark. Despite facing the long odds, the Golden Eagles rallied in the third set before losing by a narrow, 25-21 score.
