GAME NOTES: Both teams are looking to shake off losses from last weekend as Murray State hosts Austin Peay for Homecoming in the OVC Game of the Week on ESPN3. The two rivals have played 46 previous times with Murray State winning the last five, 12 of the last 13 and 19 of the last 21 overall. The Racers offense has averaged 56.3 points/game over the last three meetings and won 52-14 last season in Clarksville. That meeting was just a 17-14 contest late in the second quarter before Murray State ended the game on a 35-0 run. MSU racked up 549 yards of offense as quarterback Casey Brockman threw for 455 yards and five touchdowns while Walter Powell caught nine of those passes for 172 yards and two scores. Jake Ryan threw for 241 yards and a score for APSU who was led by Reco Williams with 110 yards on the ground.
SCOUTING AUSTIN PEAY: Austin Peay is still in search of its first victory of the season after a 63-7 loss to Eastern Illinois last Thursday. Due to a scheduling quirk, that contest was the first home game of the season for the Govs who began the season with five-straight road games; APSU was the last Division I team to play a home game in 2013. Senior running back Tim Phillips carried the ball 12 times for 83 yards (6.9 ypc) and a nine-yard touchdown run to begin the third quarter. It was the first touchdown for the Governors since the first quarter of the Chattanooga game on Sept. 14. It was a season-best rushing yards game for Phillips who transferred from Central Michigan when Kirby Cannon took over at APSU. Omar Williams added 66 yards on the ground while Darryl Clack caught six passes for 68 yards. Overall APSU rushed for 158 yards after gaining only six yards against EKU the week prior.
SCOUTING MURRAY STATE: Several missed opportunities late in the game prevented Murray State from starting Conference play with a 3-0 record, as the Racers lost in triple overtime, 37-34, to Southeast Missouri on Saturday. MSU fell behind 20-6 in the second quarter but rebounded to lead 27-20 late in the fourth quarter. The team then forced a 3-and-out but its ensuing drive ended with an interception which allowed Southeast Missouri to go 82 yards in eight plays and tie the game with 55 seconds remaining in regulation. Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime, and Murray State fumbled the ball in the second extra period, but its defense stood strong and forced a long field goal attempt which Southeast missed. The Racers possession in the third overtime ended with a 42-yad missed field goal and eight plays later Southeast converted a 30-yard attempt to win the game. Sophomore quarterback Maikhail Miller was named OVC Newcomer of the Week for the third-straight week after completing 30-of-45 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 63 yards and an additional score. Senior Walter Powell caught 15 passes (one shy of the MSU record) for 158 yards and two scores in the game. It marked his 10th 100-plus yard receiving game of his career, setting a new Murray State record. He also became the program’s all-time leader in career touchdowns (28), a mark that puts him tied for fourth in OVC history. Powell has ranks ninth in OVC history for career receptions (190) and is just outside the Top 10 in receiving yards (2,456 - just 87 yards away from 10th). This season Powell ranks ninth nationally in all-purpose yards (155.71 yards/game), first in receiving touchdowns (12), fifth in scoring (12.0 points/game), eighth in total receiving yards (643) and 10th in receptions/game (6.9).
