BOWLING GREEN 67, MOREHEAD STATE 61
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Junior Richaun Holmes and senior Cameron Black combined for 28 points, 17 rebounds and 12 blocked shots to help the Bowling Green men's basketball team record a 67-61 victory over Morehead State on Sunday afternoon at Johnson Arena.
Five Bowling Green players reached double figures in the scoring column, and the Falcons were credited with 14 rejections. Holmes netted a game-high 17 points, plus five rebounds and seven blocks. Black tallied 11 points, 12 rebounds and swatted five attempts.
The Falcons, who compete in the Mid-American Conference, improve to 5-5 with their fourth win in the past six games. The Eagles, who play in the Ohio Valley Conference, slip to 7-5. BGSU also moves to 6-3 in the all-time series with its fourth straight victory over MSU.
Bowling Green had 10 of its blocks in the second half. The rejections forced Morehead State into shooting 31 percent (22-of-72) from the floor, including just 26 percent (9-of-35) after intermission. The Falcons, meanwhile, knocked down 49 percent (23-of-47) from the field.
Morehead State tallied a 47-34 upper hand in the rebounding department, including 24-6 on the offensive end. The Eagles have still not been outrebounded in 12 tilts this season. MSU also forced 21 turnovers, which led to 17 points, and handed out 16 assists on 22 baskets.
Sophomore Brent Arrington paced Morehead State with 16 points on 6-of-14 overall and 4-of-7 from long distance. Junior Angelo Warner added 15 points, but connected on just 6-of-19 overall. Warner collected eight rebounds in the setback, while Arrington pulled down seven.
Senior Chad Posthumus led the Eagles with 11 rebounds -- his ninth performance of 10+ this year -- while junior Kareem Storey notched a game-high nine assists. The five Morehead State guards who saw action combined for 16 assists and just nine miscues.
Sophomore Spencer Parker and junior Jehvon Clarke tallied 12 points apiece for BGSU, while junior Anthony Henderson chipped in with 11. Junior Billy Reader contributed 11 points, on 5-of-6 at the foul line, and nine rebounds off the bench for MSU.
Morehead State built a 10-point cushion 15 minutes in and held a 38-34 halftime lead. Arrington's bucket with 12:55 to play gave the Eagles a 47-45 advantage, but Bowling Green recorded 10 of the contest's next 12 points to snag a lead it never relinquished.
TENNESSEE TECH 79, LAMAR 74
BEAUMONT, Texas - Simply put, there was just nothing that was going to stand in the way of the Tennessee Tech men's basketball team from gathering its sixth win of the season Sunday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles overcame adversity for a 79-74 victory over Lamar.
With plenty of family and friends in attendance, JUCO transfer Ladon Carter put together arguably his best game in a Tech uniform, scoring 12 points (several on a multitude of highlight-reel dunks) and collecting 12 rebounds for his first double-double of his Golden Eagle career. He also added three blocks and a steal in a career-high 30 minutes, seeing extra court time due to foul trouble of the other Tech big men.
Senior forward Dennis Ogbe led Tech in scoring, grabbing 17 points in just 18 minutes of work after being limited in both halves by foul trouble. The Munich, Germany native was called for his fourth foul of the contest with 16:50 to play, but managed to avoid a disqualification and played key minutes down the stretch. He scored nine of the team's first 11 points of the second half, helping give Tech a comfortable margin in the early goings of the second stanza.
Tech looked clear on its way to a comfortable lead after extending a 42-29 halftime lead to 19 points with just over 15 minutes to play. Anyone watching the game could see that it was going to be a short-lived lead, however, as by the time the clock had struck 12:19, the Golden Eagles had already been called for 12 fouls in the second half alone. The Cardinals total? Two.
And Lamar took quick advantage of the good fortune bestowed upon it, connecting on 17-of-18 attempts from the charity stripe from the start of the second half to the 4:07 mark when the Cardinals tied the game at 66 all.
A lesser team may have folded; given in to the emotion that comes with a vast foul diferential. This team, however, held strong, ripping an 8-0 run to gather control of the contest with 33 seconds to play.
Lamar's Nimrod Hilliard would hit two late 3-pointers, making the final 30 seconds of play more exciting than many would expect. But Tech made its free throws down the stretch to even its record at 6-6 on the year.
Hitting several big shots down the stretch for the Golden Eagles was junior guard Ty Allen, who scored 15 points for yet another double-digit scoring effort. Freshman point guard Shirmane Thomas put together a career day, scoring a career-best mark 12 points, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the first half and give Tech a 13-point halftime lead.
Amos Wilson went 12-of-15 from the charity stripe for the Cardinals while leading all scorers with 20 points on the day. Marcus Owens went a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line, finishing with 19 points of his own. Hilliard also tallied double-digits, hitting four 3-pointers while tallying 18 points and seven assists.
The Golden Eagles proved their dominance on the glass, out-rebounding the Cardinals 34-24, leading to 10 second-chance points. But the real dominance came in the paint, as Tech outscored Lamar 40-28 near the bucket.
Tech also had a solid night shooting, connecting on 50 percent of its attempts from the field. The Golden Eagles also enjoyed a solid night at the charity stripe, hitting on 22-of-28 freebies. Lamar did enjoy the advantage in that department, thanks to a 27-19 foul differential. The Cardinals went 26-of-30 on its free throw attempts.
TENNESSEE STATE 108, FISK 85
NASHVILLE - Jaleel Queary scored a career-high 21 points and the Tennessee State men’s basketball team won its first contest of the season with a 108-85 victory on Sunday night.
Patrick Miller scored a team-high 25 points on 8-of-17 (47 percent) shooting and Jay Harris set a new personal best with 15 of his own.
M.J. Rhett hauled in a career-high 18 rebounds, helping the Tigers win the battle on the boards for only the second time this season, 56-29.
Both sides played it close through the game’s first six minutes, as there were three ties and nine lead changes. However it was Tigers that held the lead at 20-19 when Harris swooshed a corner three at the 14:12 mark. Harris’s bucket was the cap of an 8-for-9 (89 percent) start from the field for TSU (1-10).
From that point, TSU went 1-for-7 (14 percent) allowing Fisk (6-9) to go on a 13-5 run. The stretch put the Bulldogs up, 32-25, and forced Tennessee State head coach Travis Williams to call timeout with 9:17 to go before halftime.
Fisk continued to add to its lead following the stoppage and Darrell Miller converted a pair of free throws to put the Bulldogs up 44-35 at the six-minute mark.
Miller and Richmond Jackson each had 20 points for Fisk during the opening stanza. Jordan Gaither knocked down a three with 3:27 to go to pull the Tigers within five, but Fisk answered with a 9-2 run to make the score, 56-44. In the half’s final 1:20, TSU poured in eight of the final nine points to get back within five, 57-52, heading into the locker room.
Queary led TSU with 14 points on 6-of-9 (67 percent) shooting and added three boards during the opening 20 minutes. Queary continued to impress, converting a three-point play and assisting on a Miller layup on the next trip down the floor to tie the game at 64 at the 16:14 mark. Miller then slammed home a one-handed dunk and the Tigers took the lead.
Later in the half, the Tigers played solid defense, forcing an air ball from Fisk. Rhett corralled the errant shot and flung the ball up court to Jamonte Graham who was all alone for an easy lay-in.
Graham’s hoop was part of a 17-1 TSU run that put the Tigers up, 87-71, with 7:46 to play. Rhett had a pair of two-handed dunks and Miller added a tomahawk off of an inbound pass at the 2:57 mark, making the score 99-80 and ending all chances of a Fisk comeback.
The Tigers led by as many as 25, but ended up walking away with a, 108-85, victory. TSU had a season-high 18 assists, helping the team set a new top mark in points.
