MURRAY STATE 69, NEW ORLEANS 56
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Murray State women’s basketball team closed out its non-conference schedule with a 69-56 win over New Orleans on Wednesday at Lakefront Arena. The win was the sixth in a row for the Racers, marking the second time this season they have achieved the feet.
The game looked to be well in hand early, as the Racers (15-7) jumped out to a big advantage and led by as many as 23 with 3:56 left in the half. However, New Orleans (1-18) did not go away without a fight. The Lady Privateer closed out the half on an 11-0 run, including three consecutive 3-pointers, to cut the lead to 32-20 at the break.
In the second half, UNO continued to keep pace with the Racers and scored just one point less than MSU in the final frame. The Lady Privateers cut the lead to eight on multiple occasions; however, the Racers buckled down and held on for the 13-point win.
Senior Mariah Robinson notched her second consecutive double-double and fourth of the season with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Erika Sisk also had 21 points, while junior Erica Burgess led the Racer bench with 10. Jessica Winfrey also had a good night for MSU as she pulled down 10 boards to go along with two points.
Keri Thomas led UNO in the game with 21 points, while Mirjam Sipos followed with 19. Mathilde Fogelstrom struggled offensively in the game for the Lady Privateers, going 0-for-4, but led her team with 10 rebounds.
The win gives the Racers an 8-4 record outside of OVC play for their best non-conference finish since the 2007-08 season. In her lone season as head coach, Jodi Adams led Murray State to a 9-3 non-conference finish.
On Monday, the Racers will resume OVC play when they plays host to Tennessee State. Tip-off time at the CFSB Center is set for 7 p.m.
