BOWLING GREEN 4, SOUTEHAST MISSOURI 1; EVANSVILLE 8, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 1
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -
Southeast Missouri (4-10) fell to Bowling Green State (7-5) Saturday morning in their first game of the Evansville Tournament, 1-4; followed by being shutout by the Evansville (3-9) Purple Aces in game two, 0-8 in five innings.

Southeast Missouri 1, Bowling Green State 4

Redhawks got on the board in their half of the first. Simone Patterson hit her third double of the season and advanced to third on a ground-out. Taylor Cowan threaded a single through the right side to plate S. Patterson and take a 1-0 lead.

Bowling Green manufactured four runs on five hits in the top of the second. Cowan found herself in a bases-loaded jam after giving up three consecutive singles to begin the inning. With no out, Emily McClelland hit an RBI single to put the Falcons on the board and tie the game. Cowan made an excellent fielding play when she caught a line drive right back to her and threw to first base to nab the runner, fielding the team's fifth double play of the year. The Falcons drew a bases-loaded walk followed by a 2-RBI single to go up 4-1 on Southeast.

In the top of the third, Southeast turned their second double play of the game, sixth of the season, when Bowling Green grounded into a 1-6-3 double play.

From the second inning to the end of the game, the score stood at 1-4.

Cowan recorded six assists in the game, tying an individual single-game high this season set by Elysia Mesa on Feb. 23 against Nicholls; the most for a pitcher this season.

Southeast was out-hit by Bowling Green 4-6.

Chelsea Smith was perfect going 2-for-2. S. Patterson and Cowan recorded the other two Redhawk hits in the contest.
Katie Yoho went 2-for-4, batting two runs in for the Falcons.

Cowan (2-5) pitched her fifth complete game of the 2013 season; going 7.0 innings, striking out five batters and walking four.
Paris Imholz (5-1) recorded the complete game victory for Bowling Green.

Southeast Missouri 0, Evansville 8 (five innings)
Evansville opened up a big lead in the first inning and never looked back as they continued to add runs to the board while continually shutting down the Redhawk offense.

The Purple Aces scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly followed by a three-run home run by Kendall Kautz to open up an 0-4 lead early in the contest.

Evansville added a run in the second on a successful double steal; another in the third on an RBI single; and two in the fourth on an RBI double followed by a sacrifice fly to centerfield, leading 0-8 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Down by eight runs, Southeast tried to piece together a comeback effort but fell short. Savannah Carpenter lead-off the inning with a single to left field. Alexis Anderson reached on a single up the middle; runners on first and second, one out. Renee Terry pinch hit and slapped bunted for a hit to load the bases. Taylor Perry sat the next two batters down to secure the shutout of Southeast.

The Redhawks recorded only three hits in the contest, all of which came in the final inning. Southeast was out-hit 3-8. Carpenter, Anderson, and Terry recorded the three hits for the Redhawks.

Alicia Betancur was 2-for-2 this afternoon with a run scored.

Three Redhawk pitchers appeared in the loss to Evansville. Hannah Clemons (1-3) suffered the loss giving up six runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of work. Lindsey Patterson pitched 1.0 innings in relief giving up two runs. Lauren Reinagel pitched 0.1, retiring the final Purple Ace batter Southeast faced.

BOWLING GREEN 1, MURRAY STATE 0; EVANSVILLE 3, MURRAY STATE 1
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -
The Murray State softball team dropped two games to open the Evansville Invitational on Saturday in Indiana.  MSU fell 1-0 in the opener to Bowling Green, then 3-1 to Evansville in the night cap.

In game one, a sixth-inning home run from Katie Yoho proved to be all the offense that the Falcons needed as they topped the Racers, 1-0.  The Racers (5-10) came up with six hits in the contest, but were unable to push any of the runners across the plate.  Murray State left seven runners stranded in the contest, including four in scoring position.

In the seventh, Sarah Anderson gave the Racers one last shot at a win when she missed a home run by a little under a foot to get on base with a double and no outs.  However, Bowling Green’s Jordan Imholz shut down MSU after that with two strikeouts and a fly ball for the 1-0 win.

Shelbey Miller led the Racers in game one by going 2-for-3, while Anderson, Ellyn Troup, Audrey Woodby and Casey Castile also garnered a hit in the game.  Pitcher Shelby Kosmecki fell to 3-6 with the loss after allowing just one run off of four hits with four strikeouts.

In the day’s finale, Murray State once again had trouble producing offense, scoring just one run off of three hits.  The Racers also left four on base in the contest, including three in scoring position.

The Purple Aces were first on the board in the game, walking in two runs in the top of the first.  The Racers also got off to a quick start with a single from Mo Ramsey and a walk to Castile.  However, Evansville’s Sarah Patterson quickly put a stop to any MSU offense by striking out the next three batters.

Murray State cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases off of a single from Miller, a bunt single from Ramsey and a fielder’s choice the produced no out from Christian Cox.  Castile brought home Miller two batters later with a sacrifice fly for MSU's first run of the game and the second out of the inning.  However, the Racers were unable to pull even, as Leslie Bridges popped up to first to end the frame.

Kayla Fortner pushed Evansville’s lead back out to two in the top of the seventh with an RBI single to center field.  Fortner finished her night at 1-for-1 with an RBI and three walks.  In the bottom of the inning, Patterson and her defense once again shut down the Racers and retired them in order to end the game.

Ramsey went 2-for-3 in the contest, while Miller came up with the other hit for MSU.  CheyAnne Gaskey (2-4) took the loss for the Racers after allowing one earned run off of four hits with six strikeouts and nine walks over seven complete innings.

Murray State will close out play in the Evansville Invitational on Sunday when they take on Bowling Green at 10 a.m., followed by Evansville at 2:30 PM.

ILLINOIS STATE 8, AUSITN PEAY 2; LOUISVILLE 12, AUSTIN PEAY 0
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
Austin Peay State University’s softball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped Saturday, in day two of the University of Louisville’s Red and Black Classic, as the Lady Govs fell to Illinois State 8-2 and No. 14 Louisville 12-0.

In both game, the Lady Govs (6-5) struggled to keep their opponents off the board early and could never get enough offense going to reel them back in.
In the opener against Illinois State (12-11), the Lady Govs gave up three first-inning runs on a base-loaded double to Elizabeth Kay.
Illinois State would add a run in the top of the third on a home run to right field by Laura Canopy to make it 4-0.

Austin Peay would score its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, with Laurel Burroughs drawing a walk to open the inning, and after moving into scoring position at second base on an infield out, scored when a Davidson groundball was thrown away by the Redbirds shortstop.

Illinois State would get the run back in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Shelby Music, while Austin Peay’s final run came in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back doubles by Lauren de Castro and Davidson.

Illinois State would add three insurance runs in the seventh for the 8-2 final.

In the nightcap versus No. 14 ranked Louisville (19-3), it only took two pitches for Austin Peay to fall behind.

Cardinals Katie Keller – who just came off being named the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I Player of the Week – smacked a 0-1 de Castro off-speed pitch off the scoreboard in left field for her sixth round-tripper of the season and a 1-0 lead.

Keller went 4-for-4 with the home run and to doubles, while driving in five.

Louisville would score a second run in the first as well as two more runs in the second and one in the third to take a 5-0 advantage.

Austin Peay did have a chance to do some damage themselves in the second inning – getting the bases loaded with only one out.
A single by de Castro got thing started, followed and out later, by a walk to Mel Pavel and Shelby Norton being hit by a pitch.
But Abby Guest grounded back to the pitcher, who started a 1-2-3 double play to get out of the inning.

The Cardinals would blow the game open in the fourth inning with seven runs on eight hits for the 12-0 final margin.

Austin Peay will conclude play in the classic Sunday morning, 8:30 a.m., with a game versus Miami (Ohio).

MOREHEAD STATE 1, CAMPBELL 0; MOREHEAD STATE 11, NORFORK STATE 1
BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The Morehead State softball team completed the sweep of the Hampton Inn Camel Stampede Tournament with a pair of victories on day two over host Campbell, 1-0, and Norfolk State, 11-1.

MSU moves to 7-5 on the season with the wins on Saturday, while CU falls to 12-8 and NSU slips to 4-12.

MSU continued its streak of putting runs on the board early, as senior Kayla Ashbrook brought home fellow senior Adrena Anderson in the first inning of game one.  After a single, Anderson made her way to third on the play, and Ashbrook grounded out to the shortstop to tack on her team-leading 11th RBI.

Senior Katie Post earned her team-leading fourth victory of the season in the complete game.  She struck out five to bring her season total to 37.

Ashbrook, Anderson, senior Elizabeth Wagner and sophomore Katie Raile each registered a hit for MSU in the opening contest.

MSU did it again in the second contest, as it pulled off the commanding victory over NSU.

Wagner started things off in the bottom of the first with a broken-bat RBI to score Anderson, and the Eagles tacked on 10 more runs in a third-inning explosion for the 11-1 lead.  The inning included Ashbrook’s second home run of the season.

The Eagles finished off the game with flawless defense and went on for the mercy-rule victory.

Anderson, Ashbrook and junior Stephanie Etter all had a pair of hits in the contest, while junior Greta Smeins (2-2) picked up the win.  The starter, junior Kelcey McMurray, did two innings of work for the Eagles.

NEBRASKA-OMAHA 11, TENNESSEE STATE 0; INDIANA 8, TENNESSEE STATE 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Tennessee State fell in both games on Saturday during day two of the Tiger Classic. The Tigers went down at the hands of Nebraska-Omaha by the score of 11-0 in five innings before dropping an 8-0 six inning contest to Indiana. TSU moved to 6-14 as UNO improved to 21-2 and Indiana evened their record at 12-12.

Givens was one of four Tigers to garner a hit in the nightcap. The lefty freshman duo of Kiarra Freeman and Kacie Daugherty each earned a hit, while senior Tedra Alford hit a double in her lone hit of the game.

WISCONSIN 7, BELMONT 0; BELMONT 8, UIC 1
CARBONDALE, Ill.  -
The Belmont softball team (7-8) rebounded from an early loss to earn a split in action on day one of the Southern Illinois University-hosted Saluki Invitational.  The Bruins fell to Wisconsin (15-3), 7-0, before breezing by UIC (3-14), 8-1, with hot bats.

The Badgers posted a run in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back en route to its 7-0 victory.  BU had an opportunity to answer back in the second but instead left a pair of runners stranded after single by freshman Taylor Moon (Vestavia, Ala.).  Belmont picked up a pair of hits in the top of the fifth, looking to cut into the 5-0 UW lead.  Freshman Jordan Daly (Humble, Texas) and senior Becca Gift (Durham, N.C.) got things cranking with back-to-back singles but were unable to round the bases.  Wisconsin went on to add two more runs to take the contest, 7-0.

Belmont experienced a reversal of fortune in its nightcap with Illinois-Chicago. The Bruins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, courtesy of a walk by Daly and hits by freshman Jessica Wilson (Alvin, Texas) and junior Ashley Hammer (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.).  The Flames answered with a run in the top of the fourth but BU continued to pile on the runs, adding two in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings with hits coming from Turner, sophomore Kat Hollingsworth (Carrollton, Texas) and Hammer, who smashed the team's first homeruns of the season, a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Kirbie Ferrell (Pasadena, Texas) and the quick feet of juniors Mia Vierra (Palmdale, Calif.) and Kim Johnson (Tucson, Ariz.) taking advantage of UIC fielding errors.  BU then leaned on a strong defensive and pitching effort to close the game and take the contest, 8-1.

For the day, Hollingsworth, Hammer and Wilson each batted .500.  Hollingsworth and Hammer finished with three hits apiece while Hammer led the team with four RBI on the day.

Inside the circle, several pitchers saw action.  Freshman Carolyn Snodgress (Torrance, Calif.), who threw 6.1 innings, picked up a win and fanned a trio of batters.  Moon tossed 4.2 innings and tallied three strikeouts.  Vierra and junior Brittanie Albright (Franklin, Tenn.) also saw time.
