The Southeast Missouri softball team lost to Sun Belt Conference opponent Western Kentucky Thursday afternoon, 10-3.
Lindsey Patterson had a big day for Southeast hitting two monster solo home runs in her 2-for-3 performance against WKU. This is the first time L. Patterson has hit two home runs in a game in her career.
With two out in the first inning, L. Patterson put Southeast out in front with a no-doubt home run over the left-center field wall. With Taylor Cowan on first, Alexis Anderson reached on a two-base error by the right fielder to score Cowan from first and extend the early lead to 2-0.
The Lady Toppers were quick to respond in their half of the first. It started with a bases-loaded walk followed by a bases-clearing double to left-center by Ciara Garcia to go up 4-2 on Southeast.
WKU tacked on four more runs in the second on back-to-back home runs. The first was a three-run home run down the left field line off the bat of Amanda Thomas. Kelsie Mattox, the very next batter, hit a solo shot to right-center; putting WKU way out in front, 8-2.
L. Patterson went yard again in the third inning with another solo shot to right-center to narrow the WKU lead to 8-3.
The Toppers added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Brooke Holloway and again in the sixth on an RBI ground-out to put the Toppers up 10-3.
Cowan (5-8) suffered the loss for Southeast through 1.1 innings of work giving up six runs on four hits to the Toppers. Hannah Clemons saw 3.2 innings in relief striking five batters out.
Janna Scheff (4-2) earned the win for the Lady Toppers going 4.1 innings. Emily Rousseau earned her third save of the season through 2.2 innings in the circle.
Southeast will take on Ohio Valley Conference East Division foes, Belmont (Saturday) and Tennessee State (Sunday), in Nashville, Tenn. Southeast will play a doubleheader each day beginning at noon.
