MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Morehead State baseball team scored runs in each of the final six innings, as they clobbered St. Catharine, 15-3, Monday evening at Allen Field.
With their fourth straight win, the Eagles move to 13-28 on the season, while the Patriots move to 36-19 with the loss.
Six different Eagles – freshman centerfielder Taylor Sears (2-for-5), sophomore third baseman Kane Sweeney (2-for-5), senior shortstop Chase Greenwell (2-for-5), senior left fielder Nick Duff (2-for-2, 3 BB), senior catcher Drew Williams (3-for-4) and freshman second baseman Trey Gross (3-for-4) – tallied multiple base hits in the contest. It was the most multiple hit performances in a game this season for the Eagles.
In all, MSU racked up 14 RBI on 16 total hits, led by Sears who had four, with Greenwell, Duff, Williams and Gross all accounting for two each.
Gross smashed the first home run of his career as an Eagle, a solo shot over the wall in right-center, while Sweeney extended his reached base streak to 32 straight games.
The Eagles were held scoreless through the first two innings, before getting on the board with one in the third. They exploded for five more in the fourth, and then tacked on three in each of the fifth and sixth innings. MSU closed out the game with a single run in the seventh and two in the eighth.
The Patriots were shutout through five innings, before scoring three in the sixth. They had eight total hits in the contest.
Freshman right-hander Tyler Keele (3-5) picked up the win, allowing six hits and three runs in 6 innings. St. Catharine senior righty Ryan Rizzi was charged with the loss, despite only giving up one of the Eagles’ 15 runs.
