UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -
Eastern Kentucky University’s volleyball team fell to No. 1 Penn State 3-0 before finishing off the Penn State Classic with a 3-2 win over Albany.

Top-ranked Penn State (8-1) won by scores of 25-10, 25-8 and 25-19.

Only three teams this season have scored more than Eastern’s 19 points in a set against the Nittany Lions – Texas, Florida and Central Arkansas.  Syracuse, Louisville and Marquette failed to score more than 17 points in any set against Penn State.

Junior Alexis Plagens led EKU with 12 kills.  She made only two errors in 25 attacks for a .400 attack percentage.  Katie Slay had a team-best 11 kills for Penn State.  She posted a .625 attack percentage and had five block assists.

PSU hit .440 as a team, making only nine errors in 84 attacks.  Eastern Kentucky had a .045 attack percentage.

EKU beat Albany by scores of 25-17, 22-25, 20-25, 25-18 and 15-9.  The win snapped a seven-match losing streak for the Colonels (5-8).

Plagens led the team again, this time finishing with 15 kills.  Edmond had 14 kills and 12 digs.  Freshman Johanna Boyer and sophomore Rachel Vick added 12 kills each.  Dena Ott contributed a match-best 17 digs.

Tatum Jungsten led Albany (0-12) with 15 kills.

With Albany leading the match 2-1, Eastern fell behind 4-0 in the fourth set.  However, the Colonels rolled off six unanswered to get back in the match.  The set remained close until EKU used a 7-1 run to turn a 15-15 tie into a 22-16 lead.  Consecutive errors by Albany ended the set and tied the match 2-2.

In the decisive fifth set, Eastern never trailed.  With the set tied 2-2, the Colonels went on a 6-1 run to build an 8-3 lead.  Vick’s kill ended the set and the match.

JACKSONVILLE STATE 3, TENNESSEE 2; GEORGIA TECH 3, JACKSONVILLE STATE 0
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Jacksonville State volleyball team opened the second day of action at the Tennessee Invitational with an upset over the Lady Vols before falling to Georgia Tech in the second game at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The Gamecocks (7-8) opened the day with a 3-2 (21-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-11)  come from behind upset over the host Lady Vols (7-6) before being swept (25-23, 25-21, 25-23) by Georgia Tech (6-6) in the second game.

Wisholw gave the Lady Vols a 21-19 lead before Merget answered with a kill to pull the Gamecocks within one again at 21-20. That would be as close as the Gamecocks would get as the Lady Vols rolled off three straight points to pull away for the 25-22 second set win.

The Gamecocks trailed 12-10 in the third set before Merget recorded three kills during a 4-0 run to give JSU a 14-12 led. JSU would manage to hold on to that lead and clinched the 25-22 victory after a setting error on the Lady Vols.

JSU raced out to a 10-5 lead in the third set. Clinkenbeard and Merget finished with five kills apiece in the set while Rutherford added three kills. The Lady Vols then cut the score to 22-21 following a kill by Hembry before the Gamecocks then responded with kills from Rutherford, Clinkenbeard and Agamy to close out the 25-21 victory to even the match at two games apiece.

The Yellow Jackets rallied to tie the match at 23-23 before using a kill by Jennifer Percy and an attack error by the Gamecocks to clinch the 25-23 victory.

The Gamecocks led 19-17 late in the second set before the Yellow Jackets used a 5-1 run to take a 22-20 lead. Following a timeout by JSU, Clinkenbeard recorded a kill to cut the lead to 22-21 before the Yellow Jackets closed the match out with three straight points to claim the 25-21 victory.

The Yellow Jackets raced out to an early 14-6 lead in the third set. The Gamecocks would manage to mount a comeback, cutting the lead to 23-21 after Clinkenbeard and fellow freshman Liza Pflugradt each posted four kills in the set. From there, the Yellow Jackets would manage to hold on for the 25-23 victory.

MEMPHIS 3, AUSTIN PEAY 1
MEMPHIS, Tenn.
- Another hot start fizzled out as Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team won the opening set but feel in four sets (28-26, 18-25, 16-25, 13-25) to host Memphis, Saturday, at the Tiger Invitational in Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

Austin Peay (3-12) began the match with an impressive come-from-behind effort. Memphis broke out to a 16-12 lead in the opening frame. Austin Peay evened the set quickly with a four-point run on senior Lauren Henderson’s serve. The two teams played point-for-point until Memphis had its first set-point opportunity at 24-23.

The Lady Govs ultimately staved off three set points before turning the momentum thanks to back-to-back kills by freshman Sammie Ebright. After senior Calyn Hull gave Austin Peay its second set point, sophomore Aubrey Marsellis clinched the set with a block, giving APSU the 28-26 victory.

Austin Peay scored an impressive 22 kills the opening, but could not maintain that momentum the match’s remainder. The Lady Govs would post just 23 kills in the final three sets as the momentum slowly seeped Memphis’ direction.

Memphis (8-5) claimed the second and third sets early. The Tigers jumped out to a 12-7 lead in the first set and did not look back en route to the 25-18 win. A 14-7 Memphis lead in the third set went similarly unchallenged as it posted a 25-16 win to take the lead in the match.

Austin Peay would challenge early in the fourth set and battled to a 8-8 tie. Memphis would take control with a seven-point burst to build a 15-8 lead and closed with a 9-4 run to claim the match-ending 25-13 victory.

Hull led Austin Peay with 14 kills. Junior Liz Landon scored a career-high tying 13 kills and posted a team-best .440 attack percentage. Austin Peay finished with 45 kills but saw its attack percentage fall to a match-ending .141 mark. Ebright was named to the Tiger Invitational all-tournament team following the match.

Catlin Lilly led Memphis with 16 kills and a .464 attack percentage off the bench. Three Tigers starters also had more than 10 kills in the win. Memphis finished with 58 kills and a .295 attack percentage.

KENT STATE 3, EASTERN ILLINOIS 1; EASTERN ILLINOIS 3, BINGHAMTON 1
KENT, Ohio -
Eastern Illinois volleyball earned Kent State Golden Flash Classic runner-up honors on Saturday, as the Panthers completed non-conference play by splitting a pair of four-set affairs, falling to the hosts (20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-17) before defeating Binghamton (23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-20).

EIU finishes the non-conference portion of the regular-season with a 6-7 overall mark as the Panthers will begin Ohio Valley Conference action the rest of the season, starting next weekend.

In honor of their weekend play, senior Reynae Hutchinson and junior Kelsey Roggemann both earned all-tourney recognition, marking the third such honor for Hutchinson and the second all-time award for Roggemann.

In the win over Binghamton, a trio of Panthers registered double-digits, as seniors Stephanie Arnold and Reynae Hutchinson both delivered 14 kills from the middle and outside attack, respectively, while sophomore Chelsea Lee chipped in 11 put-downs of her own.

Arnold nailed a new career-best .632 attack, while tying her all-time kill mark in the win and added a team-high six assisted blocks to secure 17 total points.

Three additional Panthers registered double-digit dig totals, with junior Kelsey Brooke pacing the backrow defense with 14 ups, as classmate Dakota Springer and sophomore Stephanie Wallace tallied 13 and 11 digs, respectively.

Sophomore setter Marah Bradbury dished out 53 assists and hit 5-for-6 with zero errors for a nice .833 attack.

Team-wise the Panthers held the advantage over the Bearcats (2-11) in kills (61-to-51), attack (.331-to-.187), assists (57-to-50), aces (five-to-three), digs (55-to-50), blocks (11-to-four), and total points (77.0-to-58.0).

Coached by former EIU assistant skipper Glenn Kiriyama (1995-98), Binghamton also had a trio of players nail double-digit kills, led by Grace Vicker's 13 kills and .542 clip.  While defensively, libero Xiomara Ortiz led all players on the court with 19 digs.

The match featured 13 ties and five lead changes as the two squads met for the first time on the volleyball court.

In the early-afternoon loss to the host Golden Flashes, the Panthers picked up the first set win but could not maintain the momentum as Kent State (5-6) earned the come-back victory.

Hutchinson and Lee led all Panthers off 12 and 11 outside put-downs, respectively, while Arnold and junior Kelsey Roggemann each added nine kills from the middle attack.

With the addition of 11 digs, Hutchinson secured her 29th career double-double and second such performance of the weekend, while Wallace nabbed 10 addition digs.

The match to the Flashes, which included 21 ties and eight lead changes, marked the sixth meeting between the two teams, as EIU continues hold onto a 4-2 all-time series advantage despite the loss.

MOREHEAD STATE 3, PITTBURGH 2
PITTSBURG, Pa. -
Behind a season-high 17-block performance, the Morehead State volleyball team knocked off host Pittsburgh 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-22, 15-13) Saturday at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse to win the Panther Invitational.

MSU won its fifth straight match and improved to 9-4. The block total was the most by the team since an 18-block effort on Oct. 2, 2009 versus Eastern Illinois. The hosts fell to 8-5.

Pittsburgh's net defense resulted in 15 blocks. Mechael Guess led the Panther offense with 13 kills. MSU held Pitt to .092 hitting while hitting .104 itself.

The deciding set featured four ties. The Eagles pulled ahead 9-5 but saw Pitt fight back to tie it 9-9. Morehead State scored the next three points to distance itself for the victory. Two attack errors and a Pittsburgh service error gave MSU a lead it never relinquished. The Panthers crawled back to within 14-13, but Bohannon ended the comeback bid with the final kill.

MURRAY STATE 3, HIGH POINT 0; MURRAY STATE 3, NORTH CAROLINA A&T 0
HIGH POINT, N.C.
- With a thrilling five-set win over Davidson Friday night, it would be hard to replicate that kind of intensity with a quick turnaround match the following afternoon. But Murray State was able to play with the same fight that led them to a come-from-behind victory over the Wildcats. In what seemed like an extension of Friday night's match, MSU battled in three tightly contested bouts, coming out the victor in each one in a 3-0 win over tournament host High Point. They then completed their third straight tournament sweep with a 3-0 win over North Carolina A&T.

Following the match, Sam Bedard was named Tournament MVP and Alyssa Lelm was named to the All-Tournament team. Bedard finished with 102 assists, including a career-best 65 in the first match against Davidson. Lelm landed 49 kills, a career-best 23 coming against Davidson. She also hit .478 for the tournament and had back-to-back matches of 12+ kills and at least a .500 attack percentage.

Against HPU the first set was a real clash with neither team gaining more than a four point advantage. The set saw 12 ties and seven lead changes as both teams fought to gain the early upper-hand. The score was knotted up, 22-22, when the Panthers called a timeout. But it was Murray State who was able to score after the break with Lelm landing back-to-back kills to give her team a 24-22 lead. High Point was able to regroup and re-tie the match, 24-24, but a pair of costly errors gave the Racers a 26-24 win.

Set No. 2 picked up where the first ended with seven more ties and two lead changes. The match remained close late with the score tied at 17-apiece. The Racers then scored the next three points to retake the lead they would never relinquish as they went on to a 25-22 win and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Panthers didn't give up though and held the lead for much of the early portion of the third set. Trailing by two, 13-11, MSU went on a 4-0 run to take a two point lead of their own, 15-13. After a Panther timeout, High Point charged back and answered with their own 4-0 run, retaking the lead, 17-15. Murray State then scored four of the next six points, and with the set even at 19-19, the Racers scored the final six points, winning the match with a 25-19 victory. Scottie Ingram played a big role down the stretch, landing three kills in the Racers final 10 points.

For the second straight match, Lelm led the Racers in kills (13) and did so with an attack percentage of .500 or better (.500). Ingram followed Lelm with a 10 kill, 16 dig performance. Four Racers had double-digit dig efforts, Ingram and Katlyn Hudson led the way with 16 digs followed by Bedard and Taylor Olden with 10 each.

In match two The Racers stormed out of the gate in set No. 1 with an 8-2 lead. The Aggies closed the gap to four, 13-9, but MSU concluded the set with a 12-3 run to win going away, 25-12.

The second set was a much closer affair with North Carolina holding a brief 11-10 lead. Murray State scored the next five points, thanks in part to four Aggie attack errors, and never looked back, winning 25-19 and taking a 2-0 match lead.

MSU again jumped out to an 8-2 lead in set number three, but North Carolina A&T didn't fade as quickly. The Aggies crawled back into the set, getting to within a single point, 11-10. The Racers then went on a 5-1 run and never looked back, on their way to a 25-20 win.

Just as in the earlier game, Lelm and Ingram finished with 13 and 10 kills respectively to lead the Racers. Ingram also had 12 digs, giving her a double-double in each game of the tournament and her sixth in the past eight games.

Olden paced the defense with 19 digs and Hannah Stultz finished a dig shy of a double-double with 30 assists and nine digs.

UAB went on to take set one, 25-13.

Belmont fought back in the second set as they got on the board first in set two and UAB responded quickly, but the Bruins went on to score four straight to take a 5-1 lead. UAB battled back to score two straight and cut the Bruins' lead to 23-20, but a 2-1 run allowed Belmont to win the set, 25-21, tying the match at 1-1.

After the break, both teams exchanged points with UAB maintaining a small lead. The Blazers scored five straight to take a 16-10 lead before a kill from Vestal silenced their run. UAB went on another run, scoring four straight to take a 21-14 lead. A kill from Vestal sparked a short BU run and started cutting the Blazers' lead down. UAB scored three straight at the end to win the set, 25-17.

Belmont took a 4-1 lead in the fourth set, but UAB fought back and came within one. The Bruins scored five straight to take a 16-11 lead. However, UAB wasn't going quietly as they responded with a 5-0 run. Belmont answered that by scoring six straight and extending their lead to 22-15. Both teams exchanged points at the end with a kill from Vestal winning the set for the Bruins, 25-19.

In the deciding set, Belmont scored four straight to take a 9-5 lead. The Blazers answered with three straight to close the gap to one, 9-8. SIUE 3, ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 0; SIUE 3, GEORGIA STATE 1
EWARDSVILLE, Ill. -
SIUE volleyball picked up a pair of victories in the final day of the SIUE Cougar Invitational.

SIUE, which closed out the non-conference portion of the 2013 schedule, improved to 4-9 with a four-set win over Georgia State 21-25, 25-13, 25-22, 26-24 and a three-set triumph over Arkansas-Pine Bluff 25-23, 25-14, 25-19.

Johnson said the offense was spread out enough that players were finding different ways to score. A focus on serving in practice also has led to improvements in the offense.

SIUE finished with 12 service aces for the day, including seven against Georgia State. Cori Harris, Kelsey Augustine, and Chelsea Colclasure had two each in the match.

SIUE found much of its offense Saturday from its middle hitters. Augustine led the Cougars with 15 kills against Georgia State and 10 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Torre added 13 against Georgia State and nine against UAPB.

After defeating Arkansas-Pine Bluff earlier in the day, the Cougars, 4-9, had a tough task in facing Georgia State, now 5-9.

Georgia State's offense committed 10 errors in the second set while SIUE hit .276 for the set to easily tie up the match.

The Cougars kept in rolling behind Augustine, who recorded six of her kills in the third set. Georgia State pushed back in the fourth set, but SIUE collected the win on its third attempt to win the set. Hilary Trevino's kill would close it out.

Johnson said SIUE's strong play in Friday's loss against DePaul made the Cougars believe.

After Wisconsin-Green Bay led 6-3 in the second set, Keaton helped the Skyhawks even the score at 6-all with two kills and an assisted block over the next three possessions. However, Wisconsin-Green Bay answered with three unanswered points and would eventually lead 14-11 before the Skyhawks bounced back with a 3-0 run of their own to even the score at 14-all. Wisconsin-Green Bay then went on a 9-2 run to go on top 23-16. UT Martin would score three straight points to close the gap to four but Wisconsin-Green Bay closed out the set with back-to-back points.

Keaton had five kills on six swings (.833 attack percentage) while Crask had 10 assists in the second set for UT Martin, who hit .276 (12 kills, four errors, 29 attempts) in the second set.

An assisted block from Crask and Hoskins made the score 13-8 but Wisconsin-Green Bay answered with four unanswered points. Later on in the set, the Skyhawks would go on a 4-0 run of their own to cut their deficit to 21-16 but Wisconsin-Green Bay ended the set with four of the last five points.
