SCOUTING MURRAY STATE: Murray State snapped a four-game losing streak and picked up its first OVC victory of the season with an exciting 44-41 double overtime win over No. 23 Southeast Missouri on Saturday. It was the team’s first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since besting No. 18 Tennessee State 49-28 on Nov. 3, 2012. Quarterback KD Humphries was named National Co-Offensive Player of the Week by the Sports Network and National Offensive All-Star of the Week by the College Sporting News after completing 21-of-36 passes for 297 yards and six touchdowns. He had a touchdown in each quarter including a 13-yarder with 46 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime. After the teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime, he connected with Janawski Davis on a 7-yard touchdown in the second overtime to give his team the victory. Humphries currently ranks 14th nationally in completions/game (21.5), 15th in completion percentage (65.8%), 16th in passing touchdowns (12), 17th in points responsible for/game (15.0) and 33rd in total offense (243.3 yards/game). Nevar Griffin (who caught the game-tying score at the end of regulation) finished the game with nine catches for 141 yards and three touchdowns while Davis had six catches for 99 yards and two scores. Davis currently ranks sixth nationally in receiving touchdowns (7). As a team the Racers rushed for a combined 162 yards, its highest output against a Division I team this season. Defensively newcomer St. Pierre Anilus had game-high 18 tackles and a sack; he is the third-different MSU player to record 17 or more tackles in a game this season (Jonathan Jackson had 19 in a game while Travis Taylor had 17 earlier this season). Despite 244 pass attempts on the season, Murray State has only thrown three interceptions, which is the 12th-fewest nationally.

SCOUTING AUSTIN PEAY: After scoring only 19 points through the first five games of the season, Austin Peay had its best offensive game of the season at Mercer on Saturday, scoring 21 points in a 49-21 loss. The Governors posted a season-high 362 yards of total offense and a season-best 245 rushing yards. Freshman walk-on Otis Gerron carried the ball 15 times for 196 yards (13.1 ypc) and a touchdown. That touchdown run came in the fourth quarter when he exploded for an 89-yard run to close out the scoring. It was the longest play from scrimmage by a Governor since Jay Bailey had a 99-yard run in 2000 and the fourth-longest rushing play by a FCS player in 2014. Overall Gerron’s 196 rushing yards where the most a player since Ryan White had 228 yards against Southeast Missouri in 2009. Freshman quarterback Mickey Macius completed six passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns in the game; APSU had only one passing touchdown in five games entering that contest. Defensively Antonio Turner had a team-high eight tackles, including 1.5 tackles-for-loss; he leads the team with 40 total tackles on the season. Overall the Govs have lost 18-straight games dating back to the beginning of last season. The team has also lost 11-straight OVC contests.
