UT MARTIN 4, AUSTIN PEAY 2
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team honored eight seniors prior to today’s match, recognizing the players for their spectacular record setting careers while a junior newcomer made a piece of history for herself by breaking the school’s single-season goals record as the Skyhawks knocked off Ohio Valley Conference rival Austin Peay 4-2 on Senior Day.
The Skyhawks (12-5-1, 6-2-1 OVC) remained unbeaten for the fifth straight game on a day which eight seniors were honored prior to the match. Seniors Amy Maksimowicz, Lucy Pater, Alyssa Curtis, Sam Dunn, Mariah Klenke, Ashley Reveiz, Ashley Watson and Dominika Conc were greeted by family and friends as the eight players were recognized for their career accomplishments.
The group of seniors would go out with a bang, picking up their 50th victory in the past four years while a pair of players built off the emotional day with goals of their own as both Conc and Watson scored respective goals, with Watson adding a pair of assists as well. Conc and Maksimowicz also joined in the action by breaking the school’s all-time appearances mark by seeing action in their 84th career game.
While the seniors and supporting cast built upon their legacy, a newcomer continued to steal the show. Junior newcomer Rianna Jarrett has continued to shine in her first year in a Skyhawk uniform. Continuing a trend of scoring a goal in seven of the last eight contests, Jarrett tallied two goals on the day, giving her five goals in the last two matches.
With the pair of strikes this afternoon, Jarrett broke the school’s single-season goals record set by Dani Myrick (2002) and Katie Jackson (2003) with season goals No. 16 and 17. She now sits just one point away from breaking the program’s single-season points record of 39 set by Myrick in 2002.
Klenke was impressive once again for the Skyhawks, picking up career victory No. 43 between the posts. Klenke tallied six saves on the day despite giving up a pair of goals.
On the appearance record set by Conc and Maksimowicz, “They are two quality kids, first and foremost. They have had an outstanding career here. To have two players who have been so consistent and really forced our program to the top of our conference, has been remarkable to watch.”
Austin Peay (4-12-1, 3-4-1 OVC) wouldn’t go quietly in the contests, finding two goals in the second half. Sophia Fabbro tallied her second goal of the season while Taylor Van Wagner joined in the action with her first goal of the year. Nikki Filippone was called upon in goal, tallying five saves on the day while allowing four goals.
The Skyhawks wasted little time jumping atop the Lady Govs. Watson notched her first assist of the day less than a minute into the game, finding an open Jarrett directly in front of the net with a perfect pass from the right side where Jarrett beat the keeper in a 1v1 to score just 57 seconds into the match.
Neither team would tally another goal in the first half before five crossed their respective goals in the second period. Jarrett would play the role of the distributor in the 56th minute, finding Conc along the right side where she would fire across the goal and into the bottom left corner of the net for her second goal on the year.
The Lady Govs would look to answer the second goal with a strike of their own just minute later. With Klenke in a 2v1 showdown, a quick touch by Giba Fabbro found her sister Sophia Fabbro for a five yard strike past the keeper to bring the game to a 2-1 margin.
With the score getting tighter by the minute, the Skyhawks would strike for a pair of goals within four minutes of each other. In the 71st minute, freshman Eva Heller would dribble down the right side before hitting Watson who would punch in a strike of her own past a diving keeper and into the left corner of the goal for her seventh goal of the season.
A similar sequence would put the Skyhawks on the board yet again in the 74th minute. Watson would notch her second assist of the day by finding Jarrett on a cross where the junior would strike from 10 yards for her second goal of the day and the single season record.
In the final minutes of the game Austin Peay would score once again following a free kick as Courtney Sheppard led Van Wagner perfectly for a header into the net. For the Lady Govs, the score would not be enough as Skyhawks preserved the 4-2 victory.
