The Southeast defense then held Detroit scoreless for 4:53 as the Redhawks went on a 7-0 run. Leyhue drained her first career triple just four seconds after entering the game to put Southeast up 14-11 with 9:37 left in the first half.

GEORGIA STATE 72, TENNESSEE TECH 60
ATLANTA, Ga. -
A slow start in the first half was the ultimate foreshadowing to the way the game would unfold, as the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team fell 72-60 at the hands of host Georgia Stage on Saturday afternoon.

However, out of the intermission, the Golden Eagles fought with the host Panthers.

The second half proved to be a much closer battle, going 45-43 in favor of the host.

Tech outrebounded GSU, 20-18, in the second half. Eleven of the Golden Eagles 20 second-half boards were offensive, while limiting GSU to just four offensive boards. Tech converted most of those second chance opportunities, scoring 13 points that way.

Tech also forced the Panthers into eight turnovers, converting 12 points off of them.

The Golden Eagles connected on just eight of 33 attempts in the first half which led to a season-low 17 first half points, compared to 27 on 40  percent shooting for the Panthers.

Tech recorded its first double-doubles of the season as senior Candace Parson scored a team-high 18 points, adding 10 points for her first of the season, and sixth of her career. Junior Samaria Howard also added a double-double grabbing a team-high and career-high 11 rebounds, while adding 14 points and three assists. Howard's double-double was the first of her career.

The Panthers were led by center Brittany Logan who recorded 19 points and 16 rebounds. GSU got 16 points from Makeba Ponder and 12 points, five boards, and four assists from Kayla Nolan.

Tech returns home on Tuesday, Dec. 16 for a 6 p.m. CST match-up with South Alabama. This marks just the second home game for Tech so far this season.

KENESAW STATE 67, JACKSONVILLE STATE 65
KENNESAW, Ga. -
Jacksonville State's six-game winning streak came to tough halt with a 67-65 overtime loss to Kennesaw State on Saturday afternoon at the KSU Convocation Center on the KSU campus.

The two-point loss is the first since the Gamecocks (6-2) opened the season with a setback at Texas Tech. The Owls extended their three-game winning streak with the win and moved to 7-2 on the year. KSU has claimed the last three meetings on their home floor against Jax State.

The game winner in the extra session came from KSU's Jasmine McAllister as time was winding down. McAllister entered the contest averaging a double-double and reached that feat against JSU. The Gamecocks held her scoreless in the first 20 minutes and four rebounds. In the second half, the Owls made it a point to get it to her in the paint as she scored all 17 points in the second half and six rebounds in the half to finish with 10 rebounds.

After a solid start to the contest after being idle since Dec. 5, JSU jumped out to its largest lead of the contest at eight points, 15-7 at the 12:59 mark of the contest. KSU managed to tie the game for the fourth time of the first half at 23-all with 3:46 to play in the half. JSU would close out the half with an 8-2 run to take a 31-25 lead in to the halftime break.

JSU suffered its first setback this season when leading at the break and just the fourth loss under Rick Pietri when holding a lead at halftime. After just 14 points in the paint for KSU in the first 20 minutes, the Black and Gold erased the six-point deficit with 13-4 run to open the half. KSU finished with 36 points in the paint, 22 in the final 25 minutes. The Owls would take their largest lead of the game with 7:58 left in regulation after a Deandrea Sawyer knocked down a three pointer. JSU's Candace Morton knocked down a pair of free throws with 4:45 left to cut the lead to 57-55 and Destany McLin was clutch once again with a jumper with just over four minutes left for the ninth tie of the game. The lead changed hands 15 times throughout the 45 minutes and saw 12 the game tied 12 times.

Senior Miranda Cantrell, playing in her home state, gave JSU its final lead of regulation, 59-57, with a jumper with 3:09 left to play. KSU's Breonna Moseley matched Cantrell with a basket with 2:09 left. That would be the final points of regulation. The Gamecocks had a chance to win it in regulation, but Morton's shot rimmed off at the buzzer.

KSU jumped out in the extra period with a three-point basket by Karly Frye, but JSU battled back with McLin's basket with 2:23 left to play. The Athens, Alabama-native gave Jax State a 65-64 lead with 1:30 left before McAllister tied the game with a free throw and the game-winner.

McLin finished with a game-high 18 points and six rebounds. Morton turned in 15 points in 34 minutes of action, while Cantrell pitched in 11 points.

JSU looks to bounce back on Tuesday when it travels to South Carolina State for a 5 p.m. CST tip off.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 75, AUSTIN PEAY 65
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -
Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team surrendered 12 consecutive points to start the second half and could not recover in a 75-65 nonconference loss to Southern Illinois, Saturday afternoon at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (2-7) scored the game’s first seven points, with three different players scoring. The Lady Govs saw that lead erased but still controlled the flow of play in the opening half, leading for more than 13 minutes. Austin Peay led by three points, 33-30, after senior Kristen Stainback’s jumper with 3:25 left.

Southern Illinois (5-2) closed the first half with a 9-2 run. Mercedes Griffin’s three-pointer at the 2:11 mark tied the game and Dyana Pierre’s layup gave SIU a 35-33 lead with 1:38. The Salukis would not surrender that advantage as the half closed, leading 39-35 at the break.

The second half’s start followed a theme all too familiar for the Lady Govs as they went scoreless for the opening four minutes. Southern Illinois opened the half with a 12-0 run and build a 16-point, 51-35 lead after Pierre’s jumper with 16:25 left.

Austin Peay recovered thanks to junior forward Jennifer Nwokocha who scored eight straight points, her jumper with 13:59 left slashing the deficit to eight points, 51-43. Her spark ignited the Lady Govs as junior guard Tiasha Gray then scored six of APSU’s next nine points to trim the lead to one point, 53-52, and cap a 17-2 run that spanned five minutes.

Southern Illinois’ Kylie Giebelhausen hit a three-pointer to stem the APSU run. The Salukis then used a 5-0 run to extend its lead back to seven points, 65-58, with 5:51 left and Austin Peay would not threaten the game’s remainder.

Gray led Austin Peay with 23 points on 9-of-21 shooting, while also recording four assists and six rebounds. Nwokocha added eight points and six rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench – leaving early in the second half after suffering an injury. Stainback finished with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting.

Pierre led Southern Illinois with an 18-point, 15-rebound double-double performance. She was one of four Salukis to score 10 or more points, including Azia Washington who added a 10-point, 12-rebound effort.

Austin Peay returns to action when it hosts Western Kentucky in a 6 p.m., Tuesday contest at the Dunn Center.

The Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball team was defeated by host East Tennessee State, 64-49, on Saturday night in Brooks Gymansium.

EKU (4-4) turned the ball over a season-low 11 times, but shot a season-low 25.7 percent (18-of-70) from the floor. ETSU (6-4), meanwhile, shot it at a 46.7 percent (21-of-45) clip, the highest field goal percentage allowed by the Colonels all season.

Shamauria Bridges led the Buccaneers with 16 points, while Destiny Mitchell contributed a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds).

ETSU led the entire game, as EKU’s shooting woes lasted all 40 minutes. The Colonels shot 18 percent (7-of-38) from the floor in the first half and fell behind by as many as 16 points. They battled back to score six of the half’s last seven points, and a layup by sophomore Nicole Bowers with 30 seconds on the clock helped Eastern pull to within 11, 30-19, at halftime.

East Tennessee regained the momentum, though, with a 6-0 run to open the second half, and the Bucs led by double digits for a majority of the second half.

The Colonels will look to regroup when they head to Normal, Alabama on Wednesday to face Alabama A&M at 7:00 p.m.

CHATTANOOGA 65, UT MARTIN 54
MARTIN, Tenn. -
The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team looked to be cruising early in the game before a stretch of turnovers and missed shots in the second half proved too much as mid-major power Chattanooga escaped the Elam Center with a 65-54 victory.

The Skyhawks (3-7) shot an impressive 54.2 percent from the floor in the first half before going dry in the second with a clipping of just 33.3 percent while committing 14 turnovers in the half. Ashia Jones approached a career high with 27 points while Tiara Caldwell notched her second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Chattanooga (6-3) placed three players in double figures as Chelsey Shumpert finished with 16 points while Ka’Vonne Towns and Jasmine Joyner notched 15 and 14 points, respectively. The Mocs made the most of the Skyhawks 23 turnovers by converting 28 points off said turnovers.

The Mocs would open the game on a 7-0 run going into the first media timeout. Joyner would knock down a pair of shots to open the game while Towns also added a trifecta to hold the seven point advantage.

The Skyhawks would respond with a 9-3 run of their own over the next several minutes with Jones leading the way with six points of her own. Following the run, the Skyhawks would trail just 12-9 at the 11:23 mark.

The home squad would continue on the offensive by remaining on a substantial run, seeing their 17-3 run over seven minutes give the Skyhawks a 20-15 lead at the third media timeout of the half. The trio of Ward, Caldwell and Tyson each tallied three points during the stretch.

Both teams would exchange shots over the following four minutes as the Skyhawks held a slim 9-7 advantage during the span. Jones would reach double figures during the stretch, knocking down three jumpers to score six points. For the Mocs it was Payne who found her stroke, tallying all of her seven points during the four minute stretch.

UT Martin would take a 33-28 lead into the halftime break with Jones tallying a game high 12 points in the opening half. Eight of the nine Skyhawks scored in the opening half while shooting an impressive 54.2 percent from the floor and notching 11 assists on 13 field goals. Chattanooga was led in scoring by Towns with nine points in the opening half.

Chattanooga would come out of the half as the aggressors, going on a 16-7 run to open the second half, while taking the team’s first lead since midway through the first half at the 15:38 mark. Three players reach double figures for the Mocs during the run including seven and six points from Shumpert and Joyner, respectively.

The Mocs would continue their offensive run by stringing together a 14-4 run over the following five minutes of play. Four players would score for the Mocs during the run while Jones and Woolfolk were the only Skyhawks to get on the board during the span.

The Skyhawks would begin to chip away over the next few minutes while Jones would eclipse the 20 point plateau as she notched four points during the span. Caldwell would join in the action after moving into double figures with a layup in the post before notching her second career double double with her 10th board of the game.

Both teams would struggle from the field in the final minutes as each team tallied just four points each in the last eight minutes of the contest. With the offensive struggles, the Skyhawks couldn’t overcome the deficit as they fell to Chattanooga 65-54.
UT Martin will return to action on Monday, Dec. 15 when the Skyhawks travel to Miami University. Action from Oxford, Ohio is scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m. CT.
